(The Sun)   Four thousand-year-old statue starts turning around in a perfect circle inside its glass case -- prompting fears an ancient angry spirit could be fighting to get out. Well, yeah, that's one way to spin it   (thesun.co.uk) divider line 106

Interesting, it only seemed to move during the day when people were around and stopped at night. Then, near the end, it stopped moving at all. A smooth surface and the vibration of the visitors walking by the case?

Arthur Jumbles: A smooth surface and the vibration of the visitors walking by the case?

I think if you go back and look again it clearly moved when people were not nearby.  If anything the flickering lights from outside implied that vehicles were passing by at the time it moved.  Although there is one point where it appears to move slightly in the dark.  Watch the shoulder and it turns a degree or so but I don't have my reading glasses so I could be wrong about that.

Bemused staff installed a camera to take a picture of the 1800BC statue every minute for a week - the spooky time-lapsed film shows it turning through 360 degrees.

I'm guessing it doesn't do the spinning thing when you point a regular video camera at it.

/You know, because you don't have 55seconds to walk over and turn it with your hand.

This is such an amazing story.  I wonder why it wouldn't be international news, instead of being run in one really unreliable newspaper?  How could such a small statue spin so slowly?

Is the museum staff high?  And did the statue get them high?

Ramen bowls and tea cups in Japan will hover pretty much 100% of the time on wet counter tops.

The ramen soup is hot and there's a little concave area on the bottom of the bowl. If you set the heavy bowl of hot liquid down on water, it totally seals the concave area. This allows heat to build up which will raise the pressure of the trapped air, leading to a sudden release. What this means is your bowl of noodles or tea cup will spontaneously move a few centimeters in a sudden jerk movement, like a ghost just pulled it.

I'm betting some staff are playing silly buggers with a camera here, but it could be some simple physics being interesting. Maybe someone cleaned the statue case and left a tiny piece of debris under the statue, giving it a fulcrum to turn on when the case shakes.

Museum staff say the mysterious occurance has nothing to do with the out of balance furnace fan motor that it directly under the floor the case rests on.

About 25 years ago my mother moved into a new office building a few doors down from a large Confederate cemetary. I gave her a ceramic mask I bought somewhere to decorate her new office. It used to be a law office so there were many empty shelves to fill. Every evening when she left, the mask was sitting on its shelf propped up against the back, but when she arrived the next morning the mask would be face up on the floor in the exact center of the room, several feet away. This continued for a few weeks. She would return the mask to its place on the shelf only to have it migrate during the night. She had a solo private practice, no employees back then, and an alarmed and monitored building. So she put a nail in the back wall of the shelf and caught a ribbon from the back of the mask on it. Problem solved, no more jumping off the shelf at night.

It's slightly less ridiculous and unbelievable? I mean, sure a jolly old fat man flying around the world in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer, giving out gifts to all the world's children, seems pretty unlikely... But, it's still more believable than a universe-creating deity... And, it's more of a healthy bit of imagination to engage in... It's imagining someone doing something wonderful and nice for everyone... But, most of the gods we get tend to be royal assholes, and believing in them tends to be a much more unhealthy activity, leading to fear and paranoia and intolerance and various other bad things when taken too far by true believers... I've never seen a Santa Claus believer fly a plane into a building in hopes of getting a special cache of toys and candy in the afterlife... Or shoot an abortion doctor because Santa doesn't approve of that sort of thing... Or oppress homosexuals because "Santa hates f*gs!"...

/On the other hand, Jesus Christ is a wonderful character... I only wish more supposed Christians actually believed in him and paid attention to what he said...

Pretty sure that humans are responsible for all the evil you mention.

And let's not forget that humans don't need to believe in God to be evil. Mao, Stalin, etc.

You also conveniently forgot about the tremendous good done by many religious organizations for the poor, etc.

I suppose that depends on your ideas about Santa Claus and your ideas about God. Now imagine that perhaps, just perhaps, different people have different ideas about both of them.

Truther: Pretty sure that humans are responsible for all the evil you mention.

Of course they are... They're also responsible for inventing Santa Claus all the gods they believe in...

And let's not forget that humans don't need to believe in God to be evil. Mao, Stalin, etc.

True... I never said they did... I was just discussing the relative merits of believing in Santa Claus vs. a god...

You also conveniently forgot about the tremendous good done by many religious organizations for the poor, etc.

Some of them do, sometimes... Some of them also hoard vast amounts of wealth and live oppulant lifestyles, while bilking poor people out of their money... Like most any other group, there are some good people and some assholes... I never meant to suggest otherwise... Just that religion and deities tend to give those so inclined a good excuse to act like assholes without getting called out on it...

But hey - if it helps you get through life painting HUGE sections of the populous with broad brushes, who am I to judge?

Where exactly did I do this? I think you're reading far more into what I wrote than is actually there... I was (only semi-seriously, mind you) discussing the relative merits of believing in Santa Claus vs. a god... Nothing I wrote painted any huge sections of the populace with broad brushes... I talked about specific actions that some individuals have done directly due to their belief in a god of some sort, and noted no one does those things because of a belief in Santa... If you read to the bottom, you'd see I also specifically praised Jesus, and wished more people would believe in him, and actually follow his teachings... So, if you're trying to paint me as anti-Christian, you're a bit off base... Anti-pretend-Christian, perhaps... But, mainly just anti-asshole...

MNguy: log_jammin: MNguy: Honestly, what's the difference?

intent

Intent and implication both start with I and are equally insulting.  Just knock it off, stop insults and we'll all be ok.

Get over yourself.

Somacandra: Mock26: How is believing in Santa Claus any different from believing in god?

I suppose that depends on your ideas about Santa Claus and your ideas about God. Now imagine that perhaps, just perhaps, different people have different ideas about both of them.

Same shiat, different day.

Arthur Jumbles: Interesting, it only seemed to move during the day when people were around and stopped at night. Then, near the end, it stopped moving at all. A smooth surface and the vibration of the visitors walking by the case?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Also, curiously less than a full circle. So, the shelf is not level, and the footsteps on the hard wood floor made the heavy side work its way around to the lower side of the shelf. There might be a small, off-center bit of traction on the bottom of the statue preventing more lateral motion.

...but let's go with angry spirits. That's way cooler.

When you were languishing in rooms I built to file you in,
And when the wind set down in funnel form and pulled you in.

Deep Contact: Electrify it and the next person who moves it dies.

We should do that to all the statues!
