(The Sun)   Four thousand-year-old statue starts turning around in a perfect circle inside its glass case -- prompting fears an ancient angry spirit could be fighting to get out. Well, yeah, that's one way to spin it   (thesun.co.uk) divider line 106

Interesting, it only seemed to move during the day when people were around and stopped at night. Then, near the end, it stopped moving at all. A smooth surface and the vibration of the visitors walking by the case?

Arthur Jumbles: A smooth surface and the vibration of the visitors walking by the case?

I think if you go back and look again it clearly moved when people were not nearby.  If anything the flickering lights from outside implied that vehicles were passing by at the time it moved.  Although there is one point where it appears to move slightly in the dark.  Watch the shoulder and it turns a degree or so but I don't have my reading glasses so I could be wrong about that.

Bemused staff installed a camera to take a picture of the 1800BC statue every minute for a week - the spooky time-lapsed film shows it turning through 360 degrees.

I'm guessing it doesn't do the spinning thing when you point a regular video camera at it.

/You know, because you don't have 55seconds to walk over and turn it with your hand.

This is such an amazing story.  I wonder why it wouldn't be international news, instead of being run in one really unreliable newspaper?  How could such a small statue spin so slowly?

Is the museum staff high?  And did the statue get them high?

Oh and also looking at the video, it seems that the statue doesn't spin when people go home, nor on the days when someone has a few days off.  It's a mystery I tell ya.

Having just been at a party where I helped hang all of the host's pictures upside down on the walls while he was outside entertaining, I'm guessing alcohol was a factor.

Ramen bowls and tea cups in Japan will hover pretty much 100% of the time on wet counter tops.

The ramen soup is hot and there's a little concave area on the bottom of the bowl. If you set the heavy bowl of hot liquid down on water, it totally seals the concave area. This allows heat to build up which will raise the pressure of the trapped air, leading to a sudden release. What this means is your bowl of noodles or tea cup will spontaneously move a few centimeters in a sudden jerk movement, like a ghost just pulled it.

I'm betting some staff are playing silly buggers with a camera here, but it could be some simple physics being interesting. Maybe someone cleaned the statue case and left a tiny piece of debris under the statue, giving it a fulcrum to turn on when the case shakes.

Museum staff say the mysterious occurance has nothing to do with the out of balance furnace fan motor that it directly under the floor the case rests on.

About 25 years ago my mother moved into a new office building a few doors down from a large Confederate cemetary. I gave her a ceramic mask I bought somewhere to decorate her new office. It used to be a law office so there were many empty shelves to fill. Every evening when she left, the mask was sitting on its shelf propped up against the back, but when she arrived the next morning the mask would be face up on the floor in the exact center of the room, several feet away. This continued for a few weeks. She would return the mask to its place on the shelf only to have it migrate during the night. She had a solo private practice, no employees back then, and an alarmed and monitored building. So she put a nail in the back wall of the shelf and caught a ribbon from the back of the mask on it. Problem solved, no more jumping off the shelf at night.

The Pork Product Nativity was probably meant more as a joke than an insult. Try the decaf, maybe?

Intent and implication both start with I and are equally insulting.  Just knock it off, stop insults and we'll all be ok.

I think we all need to worry about if our hearts are lighter than a feather if that's the case.
