Weird. I thought the gray squirrel was only the east coast, with the red squirrel only on the west. Not the case at all according to those articles.

There's a big knothole in the tree in front of my place. I threw some peanuts in there one day.

So now, this one particular squirrel SPRINTS for the tree when she hears the gate in the morning,

And if there are no peanuts, she blocks the sidewalk like this:

And I go back and fetch some peanuts for her.

People act surprised but this is Indiana.  Squirrels may as well be our official state animal.  I've been to almost half of the states in our fine nation and no other state has people that are as fascinated/excited by squirrels than Indiana.  Hell I'm even ashamed myself to admit I've been in the presence of others in a different state and seen a squirrel and commented on it and had people look at me funny and say "....so?"

Nobody gets squirrels like we do.

I'm guessing you let them live when they become a pest and get into your bird feeders / figure out how to drain them dry in a single day? If so, then yes, that's some squirrel love right there.

Whatever the date, it was a time Hamilton County was mostly trees and cornfields - and squirrels, so many that their affinity for corn threatened farmers' livelihoods.

Heighway cites several published recollections of one fall when a massive wave of squirrels swept through the county and headed east, leaving the treetops only to swim across the White River and destroy crops.

Love the details of the invasion. Or lack thereof.

CSB time!

There's a couple of squirrels I am now feeding. They spotted the peanuts I was leaving out on a side table for the crows and jays for when I'm not there to feed them. They get to these peanuts on my second floor balcony by flinging themselves from the retaining wall of the parking area below onto the side of the building that has a stucco-like covering. They then crawl, sideways mind you, across the face of the apartment building to reach my balcony. I always know when they are out there because of the thump-thump of them leaping the last few feet from the wall to my wrought iron railing.

The other morning the squirrel was taking turns hopping from the chair onto the table where the peanuts are, in between the jay and crows lining up on the railing to take their turns. Both of our cats get a nice show!

I had never seen them before visiting Vancouver BC in the late 90's. Went to their big park there (Stanley?) and was shocked to see these jet black squirrels running around.

My sparrows are getting to that point. The feeder didn't last two days from the last time I fed them, I'm considering rationing for those cute little buggers. It wouldn't be so bad if they ate more of it, but they seem to scatter much of it onto the balcony and parking area below.

We have segregated squirrels neighborhoods in Chicago.

Grey squirrels on my block. Black squirrels 1/2 mile west.

Absolutely no integration.

Dude, you sure a squirrel or some other critter isn't draining that puppy at night? Losing a whole feeder's worth of bird food in 2 days to sparrows doesn't seem quite right...

Naw, we can hear it when the squirrels land out there, and it is hanging from the ceiling in a way that I don't think anything other than really ambitious ants could get to it. The sparrows have just gotten really comfortable with it, despite the cats hanging out just below them. I think the word has gotten out, and so now I'm not just feeding the few dozen sparrows on my block, I think they are coming from further away now. Either that, or they are just voracious because they just had all their babies hatch.

Before next year, I'm going to set aside a little money and time and make a birdhouse or two for the sparrows and put a camera in there so we can see the little ones hatch and shiat.

squirrels, on occasion, are known to migrate. usually because of overpopulation and lack of food in one area forces them out to find food.

so, i guess its more of a squirrel exodus.

You linked to the European red squirrel. American red squirrels are different and common in the northern pine forests. Here in Wisconsin they are more common than grey in the northern half of the state, although you will still see grey in the cities. They are smaller and cuter than the grey but meaner. The city of Waukesha also has both black and white squirrels in addition to grey.
