Bring back the stars of the TV series and finish the storyline..... that's the only conclusion I want to the Terminator franchise.

Nah...they'll hit rock bottom when they use Martin Short.

Seconded!

Mmm Summer Glau.

That was actually a good show. Lasted a season longer than I thought it would.

I'm watch The Hero these days. It's actually not bad.

Salvation was a pretty crappy movie, but the digital Arnie at the end was incredibly well-done.

It's awesome in the medieval sense of the word, perhaps.

It is amazing that they think this would be a good idea.  Salvation was so bad words just can't express it and it just needs to stop.

They just need to make one more that ends with Reese and the first Terminator being sent back to 1984 and be done with it.

The only shades-wearing sci-fi action hero Johnson should be playing.

Let Terminator farking die already.

They're considering another time travel story where a Terminator goes back to the 1950's? Are they making a feature length version of this?

/that would be kinda awesome, actually

If they have 4 terminators to send back to various periods in time, why not send all of them to the same time? Strength in numbers and all that.

It was definitely better than Terminator: 3 and Terminator: Potato. The only decent thing to come out of either of the post-Cameron films was Skynet existing in cyberspace instead of a single mainframe, but that was a pretty common-sense leap.

Mugato: If they have 4 terminators to send back to various periods in time, why not send all of them to the same time? Strength in numbers and all that.

The TV series had an exceptionally clever take on that - multiple objectives. Skynet sent numerous machines back to kill several different people, insert key breakthroughs into advanced research, etc.

You have got to be farking kidding me...

2013-06-22 10:32:49 PM
I'm going to go ahead and say I've found everything in the franchise to be entertaining at the minimum.

I liked 3. Salvation could have been better but it wasn't terrible. The TV show wasn't bad at all.
I like Dwayne in just about everything so I'm sure he'd bring something great to the table in a new one.

Wait, what am I saying? This is the internet. Everything fails to live up to my stellar expectations, nothing is as good as the movies I watched as a child.

/they're just farking action movies

2013-06-22 10:49:33 PM
Dwayne Johnson won't get to smart-mouth around if he plays a Terminator. So no, he'll play a human.

Come on. It's like Will Smith playing a Terminator instead of the same Will Smith act he does every single movie.

2013-06-22 10:51:18 PM
Meh, if they absolutely gotta do another one the Rock is a good substitute for Ahnuld.

/liked the ending of 3 even if the overall film sucked
//didn't see salvation, the premise and 3's weakness made me leary and bad reviews made me moreso

Arnold got all the best lines in the first two.

I know that they made a shiatload of money, but we really seem to be dealing with the law of dimishing returns at this point.

2013-06-22 11:07:42 PM
Well, he saved the GI Joe franchise and made the last two Fast and Furious films that much better so I can see why they would turn to him.  I have a feeling we'll be seeing The Rock cast in a ton of previously dead franchises over the next few years.  I wouldn't be surprised that if he doesn't go for Terminator, then we'll see a new Predator movie with him as the lead.

2013-06-22 11:08:29 PM
If they make Arnold's character someone close to Sarah Connor in the new movie, then they can just digitally insert Hayden Christensen over Arnold's parts in the original Terminator. Problem solved.

/you're welcome

I liked him in the Tooth Fairy and The Scorpion King. He was good in Walking Tall also but that was a movie that really didn't need to be remade.

T4 had two major failings:

A) It was pointless. T3 wasn't great, but it had the surprise unhappy ending of "Oh f*ck, Judgement Day could only be delayed, not prevented." That was a critical story twist not just to keep the franchise afloat, but also to correct the paradox of Terminators coming from a future that no longer existed to prevent that same future from happening. T2 gave a happier ending to the story, but it wasn't a sensible conclusion.
T4 established nothing, changed nothing, and was ultimately superfluous. No matter what happens in the next film, it's a solid bet that you won't need to know anything about T4 to follow the continued narrative.

B) It was really, really dumb. The only meaningful tale to tell AFTER Judgement Day is the story of why everyone thinks John Connor was such hot sh*t. His character was put on the backburner to focus on a completely unimportant character who ends up meeting Kyle Reese, future father of John Connor. First, why make the central hero a completely disposable nobody? And an even bigger second, why have Kyle Reese taken hostage when the machines should have instantly killed him, removing any need for any complex time travel solutions? Skynet may not have known who Kyle was in the pre-time travel effed up future of T1, but should damn well know it in this version.

This.  The Rock has boatloads of charisma and he looks like a 1980s action hero.  I think he'd be a perfect fit in the Terminator franchise.

It was a stupid story.

I didn't mind the setting, the characters, the dialogue, or even some of the subplots (the idea that John Conner thinks of himself as humanity's savior due to his mother, his upbringing and his experiences but the REAL people in charge don't see it that way)....and hell, some of the new Terminator designs were awesome too (except for when they did stupid crap, for instance when grabbing an extra with no dialogue, they killed him, but when they grabbed a main character, they hurled him harmlessly through the air instead).... but that wasn't the part that hurt the film.

It was Sam Worthington.

Sam farking Worthington, Sam farking Worthington's bland character, Sam farking Worthington's bland character's arc/purpose/motive, Sam farking Worthington's bland character's arc/purpose/motive in the machine who learns to love humanity. The machine who doesn't know he's a machine. As if we didn't get enough of this "are they human?" tripe from BSG, now we have cylons in the farking Terminator Universe.

And the way it played out was dumb, hokey, cliched, and obvious, and an insult to the intelligence of any Sci-Fi fan. If I want introspective replicant bullshiat I'll watch Bladerunner.

Fans of the Terminator franchise have been wanting to see a full-length feature film based on the gritty, nightmarish future scenes of the first film for 30 years, and this is the crap we get. Not an out and out military struggle under the cover of night against uncompromising machines hellbent on wiping out humanity, but a sunny daylight soap opera jaunt by a confused android looking for his place in the world.

fark you, McG.

Here's how you fix the Terminator franchise:

Next film is a WAR FILM. A REAL gritty war film, like Private Ryan/Band of Brothers. Set in the future that we are familiar with: Colonies of human stragglers gasping for survival, night raids, big hulking HKs, and phase plasma rifles in the 40 watt range. Straight forward plot about a campaign/mission (either led by John Connor, or ordered by him) to infiltrate a T-800 factory and priority 1: Capture it, cut it off from skynet and reprogram its hardware for the war effort and if that's not possible, priority 2: Destroy it, thereby eliminating any presence of Skynet in the area and earning the humans a little piece of real estate to rebuild their civilization (for awhile). That's it. No wishy washy bullshiat, no human interest drama, no more "machines trying to understand humanity", and no human personifications of skynet. It's a computer, it has mathematically calculated humanity's termination -- it does not require an explanation or a rosy rationale for its decision.

Now, someone dig up the corpse of Steven Ambrose and let's make this happen.
