pueblonative: BTW, is there some sort of a price range for Stand Your Ground laws?  if this guy had robbed somebody of a $20 pair of KMart shoes would this have been justified?  What about somebody who used a 50 percent of coupon?

In some stores the only part of the coupon you need is the bar code, but in other stores you have to present at least 51% of the coupon to redeem it.

90supraT: Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: His hero status is offset by the fact that he's a grown man waiting in like for sneakers.

Meh, some people collect hubcaps, some collect sneakers. It is a harmless hobby, harmless except for the guy that was shot of course.

Except people who collect sneakers usually spend 70% of their income on them. Not exactly a wise business decision.

It took looking the story up to find the robber was armed. Leaving out that detail makes all the difference between a justified beatdown and a justified homicide. Also, queueing for shoes. *sigh* Even if they were a gift...camping out for that shiat?

Because no one has ever given a gift before?

A pistol would appear to be a more useful present.

Or a bullet resistant vest

Most collectors don't expect a return on investment. For example, I collect college girls' belly button lint. There's much less of a market for that than you'd expect.

Or someone who was doing nothing wrong could have been shot by the robber or maybe several people...maybe this guy prevented a "mass shooting".

How about we play like the media, over exaggerate a situation and whore it out like mass shootings and say that he saved EVERYONE'S life that was standing in line?  Oh, and the store employees...he saved them too...

Conversely, will someone concede a dollar amount at which shooting to kill is justified? $100,000? Or a year's average wage, $38,000? Or the median savings of the American retiree?

2013-06-22 11:29:52 PM
I don't think it was the $ amount.  It was the fact he had a gun and was robbing someone.

Relax, son, I'm sure that big bad robber was 8 feet tall and sporting a bunch of guns like the Punisher and that brave shooter saved those poor sneaker-buying people from going home without their sneakers.

It's a victory for freedumb.

He doesn't need a bunch...one would do the trick (which he had).  Would it have been better that he shot someone standing in line for sneakers, ran, and then let the police investigate it?

I'm fine with him shooting a robber, whether the thief had a gun or not. You should be able to protect your own property and if someone is dumb enough to steal, that person should suffer any consequences. Such as, you know, dying.

I believe robbery consists of taking by force. If you rob a house the occupants were home. If you burglar a house they weren't home.

Bzzzt! Wrong answer. Besides, why wait in line when I can just preorder my HTC and have it delivered to my friggin' house once it's available?

Waiting in line is what folks who don't have money, but do have time, do to get such items.

As an aside, it's interesting in that you have to be short on either money or time for it to matter. If you have both, or if you don't have both, you don't care. If you have money, but not time, then you have someone else do it for you; otherwise you have to do it yourself.

ex-nuke: damn yanks: WhoopAssWayne: I'm guessing all the liberal crackpots in the Zimmerman thread will keep their mouth shut in this one - after all, the shooter was black. Best crawl under that futon and p*ss down your pant leg rather than show an ounce of integrity and consistency.

Well just say there is a difference in a grown man getting shot during an attempted robbery, and a kid getting shot running away from a fight he didn't start to begin with.

How do you get shot at contact range running away when you're sitting on someone's chest beating their head against the ground? The "kid" was a 17 year old football player that weighed 180 pounds, Old enough to join the Army and play with automatic weapons and hand grenades.

This 17 year old got confronted by a 28 year old, who had already called the cops and been instructed to leave the kid allown. Anything that happened as a result of the ensuing confrontation is 100% the 28 year olds fault no matter who he was confronting and for whatever reason. He disobeyed law enforcement instructions and created a situation in which an law abbiding citizen lost his life.

I kind of agree with this but also note that robbery is a crime of desperation, not maliciousness. The guy robbing money to fund his drug habit? Or was he robbing money to feed his three children since his unemployment is expired and he has no other way to feed them?
You never know the story behind robbery, and there is rarely a coolly calculating need to increase wealth for the sake of it; they're mostly all sad.

True for you I guess.  But the fact that you're still dropping Brand names just kinda helps prove my point.

My point is every iproduct that launches has a line of thick-rim-glasses-wearing starbucks-sipping hipsters, lined up around the block ready to drop at least $400 on a device they already own with just a couple new features, so they won't look bad around the other hipsters at the coffee house.  My point applies to the people that will be waiting in line for the Xboxone and PS4 as well

Some people get their gratification from Shoes, others get it from Electronics.  Get over it.

Supporting sport hero worship will always have it's ugly side.  That doesn't mean it's not an advantageous economical avenue to continue to broadcast to the general populace as an extra commercial incentive in product sales.  Some individuals just get too greedy and that creates a public relations risk for the franchise.  Or, increases the value.  Either way, we cool.  Those guys are HEROES and deserving of nothing less than a shoe sale.  Whatever the cost.

While I kind of agree with you, if he needs to feed his family then go shoplifting in a grocery store.  I know you may have been using that as a general statement...he could have needed to keep his electricity on, etc.  So maybe it was just a bad example.
