FrancoFile: gerbilpox: FrancoFile: Do you not understand the person-of-authority thing?  It's like sexual harassment in the workplace.  Their doesn't have to be an overt quid-pro-quo.  Merely the fact that one person is in a position of authority over another makes it wrong.

From TFA:

Police said her daughter was not even in Garcia's classroom at Hastings High School.

So, no conflict of intest.

Also 16 is legal in most states. It's 17 in Texas, so she wasn't that far off.

/Not that I looked up the law while I was there, or anything

Have to disagree.  If you're goofing off in the hallway when you should be in class, any teacher can discipline you.  If there's an emergency (tornado warning, bomb scare, fire) then the entire staff is responsible for the entire student body.

Sounds like she was taking care of her whole body. As for discipline, I don't know... but let me go to my bunk and ponder it for a while.

The One True TheDavid: Big_Doofus: The One True TheDavid:

Pelvic Splanchnic Ganglion: When it's a sex crime (and especially when kids are involved), the accused is automatically guilty, even if they're proven innocent in court. I've seen several people have their businesses, careers, families, and lives completely destroyed just from the accusation alone, even after proving their innocence in court.

The One True TheDavid: This.

Pelvic Splanchnic Ganglion:
I find this to be a telling snippet from the article: She didn't have anything to say until she was cornered several blocks away.

"Just leave me alone," said Garcia.

The media chased her down, literally sprinting after her, until they had her cornered.

The One True TheDavid: They should be publicly flogged. Seriously. Tie them to a pole and teach them manners. After they're tried and found guilty of whatever kind of "harassment" charge applies, of course.

Big Doofus: Seriously??? You're pissed off at the media after a teacher bangs a student? Wow, we are really in trouble as a society. What if that was your kid? That's right, you don't have kids. You've never made it that far in life.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. Do you even understand the concept? It's not like they were caught live on TV: all we have is an unsubstantiated, unproven charge. The case hasn't even gone to trial yet.

What if it was YOU? Suppose somebody said "I saw Big Doofus felching a 5 year old." Would you agree that you were automatically guilty just because somebody said that? But of course you would: you're a man of honor and ethics, so you'd tie the rope to the lynching tree yourself and make sure the whole neighborhood showed up. Who needs a fair trial when all it takes to convict is somebody talking shiat? Note that by your standard you can be guilty of felching a 5 year old without even having to go anywhere near one: it's the accusation that makes you guilty, not anything you might have done.

Along that line, a cautionary tale:

Girl Was Not Molested by Neighbor Her Angry Father Killed, Police Say

The father, Jonathon Edington, 29, a Fairfield patent lawyer, broke into the home of his neighbor, Barry James, on Aug. 28 and repeatedly stabbed him, just minutes after his wife told him that Mr. James had molested their daughter, according to the police.

But on Thursday, police Capt. Gary MacNamara said : ''We are confident in our investigation that Mr. Edington did in fact kill Mr. James. We're confident that Mr. James did not molest the Edingtons' daughter.''

She didn't have anything to say until she was cornered several blocks away.

Uh, I think she can make a case for a harrassment. Just because it's a tv station, doesn't mean they get to chase someone down and make them feel unsafe.

And here come the REAL victims...

"He was outraged and disappointed and called 911," she explained.
'

Really? Your daughter in a park with her girlfriend is an emergency? Were they farking in the wide open?

"She just barely turned 16. At that age, you don't know what you're doing, what you're getting yourself into," added the mother

No. YOU don't know what your daughter is getting into because you are a bad mother who thinks her daughter is stupid.

Based upon the choices the daughter was making, I'd say that would be a correct assessment.

It sounds like the parents didn't know that their daughter was gay.

Saying things like, "She doesn't know what she's doing", is just playing the pity card. It's an admission of bad parenting. "I raised an ignorant child", is the same.

I'm still trying to figure out what the bad decision was.

Before you vilify this teacher, let's check and see just how innocent this 16 year old victim is.

Fury Pilot: Duke_leto_Atredes: This is why you do not let homosexuals anywhere near children.

// but hey I am the white heterosexual male so it's my fault

So glad I could lighten your day.

OgreMagi: gameshowhost: Wait. The dad caught them in a public park? WTF was *he* doing there?

Probably the same way I figured out my stepdaughter was sneaking out to party.  By paying attention to the farking obvious.  Teens think they are the smartest and sneakiest person to have ever existed, but they are usually too naive to actually pull sneakiness off well.   It was pretty farking obvious that something was going on when she spent an hour in the bathroom working on her makeup before "going to bed".

Oddly enough, my ex didn't see anything strange in that behavior.

Don't make me have to tell your ex about your public park escapades, man. (._. )

A 16 year old girl hooking up with a 29 year old,  and you can't figure out the bad decision?

Waldo Pepper: Nezu Chiza: At what age is someone responsible for their own actions? I mean, at 16 you can drive a multi-ton death machine and be held responsible if you break the law, so why aren't you responsible at 16 for sex?

at 13 you can legally work on a farm picking produce that allows the masses to be fed, does that make one responsible to have sex

That just supports my point, really. We have all these arbitrary ages for all sorts of different things. Driving at 16. Sex at 18. Drinking at 21. And your example of 13 to work on a farm. So I ask again, what age is someone responsible for their own actions? Because that's FOUR ages right there that have responsibility and every one is a different age.
