Because a pair of eyeballs watching a DVR'ed show is worth substantially less than a pair of eyeballs watching live TV. So you do what's necessary to make the DVR suck just enough.

My DVR (a Dish Network one) seems to do pretty well automatically extending the recording time for sporting events.  Occasionally it misses something (it lopped off the end of a football game that had a 1 hour weather delay in the middle) but  overall it does well.

Now for non-sports programs, there are issues.  I've noticed it most with NBC, SyFy, and USA (both of which I believe NBC owns) - programs like 30 rock, Community, Burn Notice, Covert Affairs, Lost Girl, etc, oftentimes have an extra 30 seconds to couple minutes of content beyond the standard run time.  I can set the DVR to automatically record an extra 2 minutes beyond the end of the show, but that doesn't work all of the time because there are only 2 satellite tuners and if they're both set to start recording something immediately following the scheduled end time, they have to end whatever they were on before on time to get to the new thing.

The strange thing is that when recording one NBC (or NBC owned cable network) show and then the show immediately following it, the DVR mysteriously loses about 5 - 10 seconds worth of content between the recordings, which oftentimes seems to be the exact time that some joke or plot-relevant bit of information is happening.  I don't know if it's a conspiracy, but the timing is pretty suspicious.

I'm not sure if other networks are doing the same thing, they may be, most of what I want to watch on TV just happens to be on NBC owned channels.

Except by "European", this article writer means "British", and the British are none of those things. The British are worse in practically every way when compared to America, except for very current things, like the obesity problem. But they're catching up in that, and they'll pass us soon. That's because Britain views America as sort of a laboratory for bad ideas. If we do anything stupidly enough, like how we compensate bankers or how we decide to invade other countries, the Brits are sure to say, "Well, that's a right catastrophe. Let's give it a go, then!"
Not all of Europe is like that. Germany looks across the water and says, "What the fark?" Britain turns to Germany and says, "Hold my beer."

As one of the comments points out the UK had this even in the old VHS days. It was called PDC, Program Delivery Control and the channel sent a signal to the VCR telling it a program had ended. Until it got that signal it would carry on recording.

Of course you only had a VHS tape so when that ran out...

/I love my Sky+ DVR. I even have the Sky app so I can surf the EPG and hit Record on a program and it sends a signal to my DVR telling it to record so it will be waiting for me when I get home. Very useful if I have forgotten to set something up.
//Mind you I mostly watch the BBC anyway so if I miss something I can just watch it on iPlayer.

FTFY. The actual content is fixed at 43 minutes per hour.

I'm saying that some of that content seems designed to overlap the scheduled start time of the next show. An example is the 'Troy and Abed in the Morning' skits at the end of Community.  The first bit ends up being recorded as part of Community, the second half somehow ends up at the beginning of the recording of what comes on right after.

I'd agree with subby on this. To get a license in France, you need a week long course, have to pay over a thousand Euros, and even then it's not a sure thing you'll pass the test.

In the US, you just need to not hit anything for the half hour the test takes.

This isnt really the case anymore... you typically have to hold a learners permit for a full year prior to even being able to take the test in the US, and most school systems have adopted drivers ed into their highschool program.  The average new driver does not merely take a short road test to get licensed.

Are you talking about the Europe that's currently experiencing the super high unemployment and riots everywhere, and where the racially homogeneous cultures are having paroxysms of nationalism over dark people moving in and not being Christian enough?

I'm glad they can record TV in between having their cars burned in race riots.

Smeggy Smurf: They also start world wars, started the crusades and enslaved the africans

The crusades were the direct result of the Byzantine emperor asking the pope for help defending against invading Muslim Turks.  Also, the Africans enslaved enemy tribes all on their own, and just happened to sell them to slave traders.

But on the other hand it sometimes takes a long time for something like the most up to date cell phones to make it to Europe, and on a lot of tech the Europeans will pay the exchange rate tax where they actually pay more for a device than someone in the U.S. will pay for the same device. Some things available in the U.S. just aren't available in Europe, like Google Voice.

It's a toss up which countries have it better, tech wise. Though when I was traveling through Europe, it was easy to buy SIM cards in each country and pop them into my unlocked cell phone. and it was cheap to purchase.

Actually, the article mentions that the Scandinavian countries have this too. And, as far as I know, the Scandinavians are definitely better looking than Americans. Or so the Local.se's sidebar suggests.

And they also don't go all Breivik on each other too often.

Better drivers ARE downright scary to crappy drivers.  I cut my teeth as a driver in Japan where the streets are narrow, sight lines are very limited and every second is an accident waiting to happen.  Now I get all kinds of stares of horror from drivers around here because I only need a couple inches of clearance to make it through traffic at speed.  Americans already drive goddamn Canyoneros but they need three feet of clearance because they have no farking clue where the edges of their own vehicle are.  Americans' ability to focus is shiat, their awareness is shiat, their ability to control a vehicle is shiat, their reaction times are shiat and their decision-making is shiat.  It's no wonder you'd find actual driving skills downright scary.

The ironic thing is that Americans have the gall to complain about traffic.  Traffic in America is ten times more painful than it needs to be because everyone drives effin' tanks without the ability to even safely control a go-cart.

Not if you live in my part of the country.  We love our rotaries and you can pry them from our cold, dead hands.  I recall drivers in NZ being appalled at my aggressiveness in going through rotaries and honking at me like there was ever any real danger of a collision occuring (there wasn't, harden the fark up).
