This is the sort of day that deserves a reaction, at the very least. The failures we've seen today should not be shrugged off.

sadly, even the best track is only 'good enoug'h on safety and it is only a matter of time until something bad happens to show how it needs to be better, and only a fatality or serious injury shows that

there have been so many safety improvements that have created a false sense of security, but motorsport will never be a safe thing and improvements and safety innovation are always needed

I mean, they were lucky nobody died from that massive Audi/Ferrari crash in 2011 when that car was flying through the air 5ft from fans. Don't think anything changed other than putting new tires in the way.

LoL, I guess they could continue with engine restrictions but with the speed they are doing today and current body/aero rules I think they could hit 300mph if they wanted and the track was straight along the Mullsann

Physics would tell you otherwise. 200 mph with the amount of downforce they have is pushing it. 550 hp/ton (think veyron power to weight) might hit 240 with 6 miles of straight and that's with very little downforce.

Ya, damn shame. I thought he was alright, they said he was able to walk away into the ambulance and then was reported conscious at the hospital. No idea how his condition deteriorated so quickly.

Just started watching, what is the story behind this?

They're working really hard at NOT talking about it, but I think the story is:
1-crashed
2-walked to ambulance
3-went to hospital
4-died

Eurosport said they were putting him on the backboard after the crash, and then there was nothing, then a release from the ACO saying he was concious, then just awhile ago the notice that he had died shortly after the crash at the care center.

If all of the reports were accurate, embolism or clot?  It certainly caught the Eurosport team out by surprise when they read the news.

Does anyone know if he hit the barrier head on because the video posted up thread seemed like that's what happened. However, this video shows a lot of damage to the rear.

General chatter is that he hit driver's side.

you knew it wasn't good when they wouldn't talk about it right away and no ambulance left the track

AngryDesertDweller: Good Morning (California here) I'm riding with Corvette....... any word on the driver in the bad crash ?

He's conscious. Released video from a car behind him, there were a few cars braking ahead of him at the turn, he in turn braked and ending up hooking to the left into the barrier.

Vette's aren't doing so hot so far. I've seen 2 spin outs and 2 run offs.

ACO said he was awake and alert about 30 min after the crash, if it's the Aston Martin crash you're talking about.

Wish I had a better stream; commentary is 15-20 sec. behind the video.

AFN is completely ignoring the race. Shocking. Glad there's a stream available so I can keep up!
