(24 Hours of Lemans)   It's the 90th running of the 24 hours at Le Mans... And it's already running, sort of, well they are again now... Audi's are the car to beat although the Toyota was the fastest in qualifying... Link goes to live feed   (24h-lemans.com) divider line 282

BTW there's a 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle race in September. Sadly it hasn't developed the following of the car race, granted it hasn't been around as long but still, a 24 hour motorcycle race.

they doze off in the garage, they don't actually stay up the whole 24 hours.

wimps...i don't start hallucinating till at least 40hrs up in a row

TheRealBillBrasky: WhyteRaven74: I love the pit stop rules at Le Mans, you can work on the car or change drivers but you can't do both at once, and then when you do work on the car it's only 2 crew members allowed to touch it. Oh and you have to turn the engine off.

Yeah but the one-gun rule for tires slows things down too much. Now that Audi has a closed car too, time for the French to admit they did it to aid Peugeot.

Is there a Pescarolo  car in the race this year ??

sno man: that is completely insane.

Well they do have three riders per bike, but yeah motorcycles on the Circuit de la Sarthe is completely insane. Especially at night.

They only use the Bugatti circuit.

SAFER barriers are sorely needed at this track.

Which means they will never be in place.

the barriers work well enough, hell I can't remember the last time they had two fix a barrier twice in one race.

Just one of those quirks of location I think, just happens to be where the air comes together to lead to regular rains.

at least it's not f1 in malaysia where they delay the race for the european market long enough for the inevitable afternoon thunderstorm

That's a bit of an odd thing to claim on a day like today. They might have been (barely) lucky up until now, but it's obvious that guardrails don't cut it.

And while we're at it - there are forms of gravel commercially available that aren't ridiculously sharp little shards.

I think today they're just real unlucky, and the earlier wreck also screwed up a tire barrier and some other stuff. Just having so many safety car laps is way out of the ordinary, the car has been out what 3 or 4 times already.

yeah i was thinking that before.  you can get round stones for your garden, why not use it for a gravel trap.  the friction between angular stones can't stop the care that much more than rounded stones that don't cause punctures

A "good enough" track is one that can handle the real unlucky days. Unfortunately, in motorsports, it usually takes one of these days to reveal that a track is no longer good enough and needs upgrades, since almost nobody is proactive, and it's all reactive.

This is the sort of day that deserves a reaction, at the very least. The failures we've seen today should not be shrugged off.

This is total lame-ness. Come on. Stupid rain.

My absolute favorite part if the year is to see these cars running laps at night. I'd really like to be there for the 100th and I'd love to be there in the middle of the night just to hear the cars.

Also, McNish/TK team leading. Too bad Dindo retired.

Safer barrier everywhere?

I mean, they were lucky nobody died from that massive Audi/Ferrari crash in 2011 when that car was flying through the air 5ft from fans. Don't think anything changed other than putting new tires in the way.

sadly, even the best track is only 'good enoug'h on safety and it is only a matter of time until something bad happens to show how it needs to be better, and only a fatality or serious injury shows that

there have been so many safety improvements that have created a false sense of security, but motorsport will never be a safe thing and improvements and safety innovation are always needed

Also, the track safety is pretty ironic because aren't there a shiatload of pit requirements because of safety?

I will also add that I'm glad Netflix streaming had this year's Audi endurance video/team propaganda a couple weeks ago. Had Jason Statham narrating a couple years ago.

Every single time I've noticed an in-car camera lately, they've been going wide at the Dunlop curves.  It's like they think the rainbow stripes are the actual track lines...

Speaking of fan submission...did I hear correctly earlier that one team was finding drivers by testing gamers o their ability to drive the track?

GT Academy, it's a joint Sony Nissan thing, if you win, you get to learn to drive real race cars all expenses paid. Basically it's a driver development program that goes "Ok, so what if you weren't born rich or with parents who could talk people into giving you money to race?"
