(24 Hours of Lemans)   It's the 90th running of the 24 hours at Le Mans... And it's already running, sort of, well they are again now... Audi's are the car to beat although the Toyota was the fastest in qualifying... Link goes to live feed   (24h-lemans.com) divider line 282

That's a shame for the #1 team.  Truleyer and Lotterer are two guys I watched in FNippon while I was over there, always liked them.  Loic Duval was there too; seems like Audi's scouting system is pretty good.

Eurosport is starting to get into the silly zone: "there's a lot of alto-singing brass monkey's out there...it's bloody cold!"

Wonder if we'll get a 20 minute conversation about bacon sandwiches again this year.

It's why I'm putting up with this feed despite a really annoying delay between video and audio.

I would seriously pay a fair amount of money to be able to get Eurosport and Motors TV reliably over here; their motorsport coverage is fantastic.

It's interesting that two of the Audi's have problems just entering the night-time.  If Toyota can keep going, they will be ensured at least a podium.

I was impressed with the headlight array patterns at least one of the cars I saw was using. The lights bulbs are aligned vertically and flash independently.

It was pretty cool.

I talked to a co-worker about flashing lights.  He said the new thing in the USA is some sort of relay kit that will make the headlight flash continuously for safety.  I hadn't seen that yet, but I did the other day.  It seemed to be a normal 6" headlamp flashing, and it was daytime so it didn't put me off.  I'll have to wait till I see it at night to comment on my opinion.
/And my opinion will definitely depend on what type of headlamp is affixed to the motorbike
//can an HED headlamp cycle fast like that?

I was thinking that the chicanes on the Mulsanne straight were added because of Group C cars hitting 240 mph and more on it back in the 80s, but LMP cars aren't as fast as the Group C cars were, so why not get rid of the chicanes since there's no real point to them?

Like their comedic effort to reduce costs in Group C, which ended up increasing costs, driving away manufacturers and in the end destroying the series.

It might help limit the speed differences on multi-class races, and create more acceleration/braking points. They're ... entropy restrictors. yeah, that's the ticket.

Since the straight is so long, the LMP cars (really Lemans P1) that you mention would totally re-gear the transmission and re-aero the body so that they would probably be topping out around 300 Mph which would be really farking cool!

Wouldn't squeeze out much more speed that way, the engines don't have enough power to get too far above 200 mph. Certainly wouldn't hit the 240 the cars used to do on the Mulsanne straight before the chicanes got put in.

LoL, I guess they could continue with engine restrictions but with the speed they are doing today and current body/aero rules I think they could hit 300mph if they wanted and the track was straight along the Mullsanne.

Physics would tell you otherwise. 200 mph with the amount of downforce they have is pushing it. 550 hp/ton (think veyron power to weight) might hit 240 with 6 miles of straight and that's with very little downforce.

I love the pit stop rules at Le Mans, you can work on the car or change drivers but you can't do both at once, and then when you do work on the car it's only 2 crew members allowed to touch it. Oh and you have to turn the engine off.

Yeah but the one-gun rule for tires slows things down too much. Now that Audi has a closed car too, time for the French to admit they did it to aid Peugeot.

they doze off in the garage, they don't actually stay up the whole 24 hours.
