In my grandfather's day, there were plenty of male-only gardening clubs. They called them 'allotments'.

An allotment? Sounds like he was a serf.  Who allocated it, government or landowner?

Come on now. You wouldn't say "allittlement", would you?

Enemabag Jones: Stop the patriarchy.  It is sexist.

Well, if you put it that way.

I've got a small raised garden bed going in my backyard that's been pretty successful.

it's been pretty fruitful - lots of yellow squash, zucchini, green beans, several varieties of tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, jalapenos, berries, etc.

it's a good excuse to get outside and tend the garden - to get away from the wife for a few hours. I'll go out and drink a few beers in the process usually.

whenever i'm grilling I also like to throw a few veggies on there as well.

however - a gardening club? I haven't thought of that. none of my guy friends are into gardening (except one who i'm pretty sure grows weed)

Sometimes I think about how it was in the best interest of slaveowners to keep their slaves sheltered and well-fed and well-rested and overall in a healthy state, and that they had to provide for the slave, in exchange for his labor, everything that the slave needed to physically survive and grow and reproduce, and it seems to me that if slavery were legal today, no businesses would even do it. Minimum wage today doesn't buy that much. Slaves would only be owned by multi-millionaires using them as private housemaids. Maybe not even then, because you can already get Mexican ladies to do that.

There are more slaves today than at any time in human history...  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19831913

So much is talked about slavery in the US prior to the 1860's.  Like it is the only place slavery existed.

Unfortunately, today's problem doesn't get as much press.

This is so true. It's even a major problem in the US as sexual slaves are imported from economically depressed areas like Eastern Europe and Asia to work as prostitutes here. Did you know that Ashton Kutcher is a leading voice in opposing sexual slavery? He's been involved in this work for years. It's pretty amazing that the guy may be a great actor but is still humble and willing to help the exploited like this.

Slash (the guitarist from Guns 'n Roses) is also involved in the anti-slavery cause. He recently released a track that attempts to shed light on the plight of slaves around the world.

America has nothing to be proud of when it comes to its slavery legacy, but that doesn't mean that we can't step forward and make a positive difference today. With popular media celebrities like akplus and Slash spending their time and money for these causes, I hope we can eliminate this evil from our world.

Anderson's Pooper: Food gardening is men's work.  Dad was a teacher and spent his summers growing tons of vegetables to put in the freezer for the winter. Flower gardening is for women and gays. My fairy godfather and his partner had fabulous violets.  Both are useful pursuits.

Real men do what they want without letting anyone else define manhood for them. ;)

Flowers in the front yard, veggies in the back.

/wife is thankful for both

While I enjoy making fun of women as much as the next guy, the article says the clubs are dying and it's only small local clubs (also on the decline) that are female-only.
Can't misleading headlines stick to the politics tab?

The reason men only clubs are dying is because male gardeners get together to share knowledge and give advice. All that is readily available on the Internet now.

Women clubs will survive because they get together to yak and see who puts out the best cheese platter.

What a men's gardening club may look like:
