At some point, a threshold is passed, and, as Jon Stewart put it, the burden of proof shifts.  No matter what batshiat conspiracy theory anyone comes up with, now the government has to treat it as a serious claim.  So, a death that appears to be a strange coincidence needs to be investigated thoroughly.

Jon Stewart's rant.

Jon Stewart's rant.

But who would trust the Government to investigate this death? Even if they find iron-clad evidence that it was just an accident (the reporter was drunk, there was a mechanical failure, etc), those who already think it was an assassination will only scream "COVER-UP!". And should there be proof found that the Government was involved, would it ever be exposed?

The GOP will seize onto this death and turn it into Obama's "Vince Foster" moment. Whether it is true or not.

GeneralJim:

The Daily Show has only gone further into the tin foil from there:
img.fark.net

But really, what sort of investigation do you want? Since when can the LAPD investigate the intelligence community? Can the PhDs at NSA/CIA/whatever hack the telemetrics of a brand new Mercedes? Without a doubt. Can anybody ever prove it was done? Good luck.
The toxicology's not back. There's barely been enough time to give the car a good going over. There's definitely not been enough time to research what this guy was investigating, but the LAPD was out on Thursday yelling "no foul play." I don't blame them at all, because it's pretty obvious from the situation that if it was a case of foul play, you're probably talking about people with access to real-time satellite data and no cop wants to be the guy to step forward and claim the world ever works that way.

Yeah, I suspected we'd hear something like this, regardless of accuracy.

It's definitely not how the FBI would do it. And I think the CIA would only do it that way, if it was trying to pin it on the NSA. Some people think those two are in a spat right now.

yeah! you can't trust those cops or FBI at all!

"a law enforcement official told the Post that...."

Oh....So I guess you don't trust the cops UNLESS anunnamed one says something bad about the FBI. then, logically, you don't trust the FBI unless an unnamed FBI agent says something bad about the NSA. So basically, don't trust anyofficial government types ever...Unless they say something to want to hear.

But remember, kids. Jon Stewart is a partisan hack who never, ever, EVER criticizes the Obama administration and only makes fun of Conservatives.

Not making an accusation at you here, Jim, just using the deserved criticism in a point, debunking an oft-repeated tidbit of ultra-idiocy parroted by certain "Libertarians."

I dunno, how do we know he wasn't just nuts?

I have a side that really wants to play along with conspiracy theories, but sometimes coincidence is just that. And sometimes people can become so paranoid their irrational fears become their own undoing.

For all we know, he worked himself up and wrecked trying to lose a car that wasn't' even tailing him. Only people that knew him intimately would be able to even guess at what might have happened.

Have any of his colleagues or family/friends verified they were being questioned by suits?

MmmmBacon: The GOP will seize onto this death and turn it into Obama's "Vince Foster" moment. Whether it is true or not.

I don't know about all that. The GOP wasn't a big fan of this guy to begin with.

I'm real hesitant when people start accusing the FBI. Sure, I'm sure they have their clutter and rot. But 99% of that organization is our best last defense against illegal government actions and for good reason.

Think of it this way: If there were even a whiff of a rogue element in the FBI, they'd be devoured from within. Agents and ladder climbing bureaucrats would be itching to make their careers nailing them to the wall.
They may be a part of the intelligence community, but they are a far far cry from the CIA or NSA.

I can more easily believe he could have been killed for something he was GOING TO REPORT ON than he was killed for something he ALREADY REPORTED ABOUT. Nobody gets stealth murdered by covert government operatives for something they let out of the bag five years ago, no matter how embarrassing it might have been to anyone at the time.

That said, even the FBI doesn't stealth murder an obnoxious reporter by burning his car to the ground in a huge fire in the middle of Beverly Hills. That's more of a gang or drug killing, assuming it wasn't just a regular horrifying high-speed car crash.

Then this guy decided to try to expose these people following him and decided to start speeding around to so the normal cops would get evolved. Being a douche he didn't think his cunning plan all the way through and smacked into a tree.

This is also more plausible than the evil gubmnt theory. I've cited people for speeding for dumber reasons.

Nemo's Brother: Good old Obama. This shouldn't be a surprise. Obama had already declared the power to kill US citizens without a warrant.

Karl Rove's chief IT consultant, Mike Connell-who was facing subpoena in connection with 2004 Presidential election fraud in Ohio-mysteriously died in a private plane crash in 2008.  Connell was allegedly the central figure in a longstanding plot to electronically flip votes to Republicans.
In July 2008, Connell was named as a key witness in the case known as King Lincoln Bronzeville Neighborhood Association v. Blackwell, which was filed against Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth J. Blackwell on August 31, 2006 by Columbus attorneys Clifford Arnebeck and Robert Fitrakis. It initially charged Blackwell with racially discriminatory practices-including the selective purging of voters from the election rolls and the unequal allocation of voting machines to various districts-and asked for measures to be taken to prevent similar problems during the November 2006 election.
On October 9, 2006, an amended complaint added charges of various forms of ballot rigging as also having the effect of "depriving the plaintiffs of their voting rights, including the right to have their votes successfully cast without intimidation, dilution, cancellation or reversal by voting machine or ballot tampering." A motion to dismiss the case as moot was filed following the November 2006 election, but it was instead stayed to allow for settlement discussions.
The case took on fresh momentum in July 2008 when Arnebeck announced that he was filing to "lift the stay in the case and proceed with targeted discovery in order to help protect the integrity of the 2008 election." The new filing was inspired in part by the coming forward as a whistleblower of GOP IT security expert Stephen Spoonamore, who said he was prepared to testify to the plausibility of electronic vote-rigging having been carried out in 2004. The stay was lifted September 19, 2008 and Connell was served a subpoena on September 22.
Spoonamore, a conservative Republican who works for big banks, international governments, and the Secret Service as an expert in the detection of computer fraud, found evidence that Karl Rove, with the help of Mike Connell and his company GovTech Solutions, electronically stole the Ohio 2004 election for Bush.
Spoonamore testified that the "vote tabulation system [which Connell designed] allowed the introduction of an additional single computer between computer A and computer B." This is called a "man in the middle" attack. According to Spoonamore, "This centralized collection of all incoming statewide tabulations would make it easy for a single operator, or a preprogrammed 'force balancing computer' to change the results in any way desired by the team controlling the Computer C." Spoonamore further testified that the only purpose for such man in the middle architecture is to commit crime.
Despite Connell's efforts to quash his subpoena to testify, he was ordered to appear for a two-hour, closed-door deposition on November 3, 2008, just eighteen hours before the 2008 national election. Though Connell had expressed willingness to testify, he was reticent after receiving threats from Rove.
Arnebeck presents evidence that Karl Rove threatened Connell, cautioning that if Connell didn't "take the fall" for election fraud in Ohio, Connell would face prosecution for supposed lobby law violations.  After this threat, Arnebeck sent letters to the Department of Justice, as well as messages to high-ranking members of the department, seeking protection for Connell and his family from attempts to intimidate. Despite Connell's elite status as a top-rung Republican consultant for years, whose firm New Media Communications provided IT services for the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign, the US Chamber of Commerce, the Republican National Committee, and many Republican candidates and campaigns, witness protection requests went unheeded.
Election fraud analyst and author Mark Crispin Miller notes that the timing and circumstances of Connell's death-between deposition and trial-are too suspicious and convenient for Rove and the Bush administration, not to merit a thorough investigation. Arnebeck and Fitrakis intended to both further depose and call Connell to testify as key witness in the federal conspiracy case. Connell was also to be questioned about his key role in the disappearance of thousands of White House-RNC email transactions. These emails are believed likely to have shed light on the White House role in the political firings of US Attorneys, as well as decisions to prosecute former Alabama Democratic Governor Don Siegelman.  Attorneys in the case said that Connell's testimony would likely lead to the subpoenaing and under-oath questioning of Karl Rove.
Connell was an experienced pilot. His plane had been recently serviced. He had been in the nation's capital on still-unknown business before his single engine plane crashed December 22, 2008 on the way home, just three miles short of the runway in Akron, Ohio.  The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Timing of Connell's deposition may have saved the 2008 presidential elections from electronic theft. However, Bev Harris at Black Box Voting notes that man in the middle systems are still in place in Illinois, Colorado, Kentucky, and likely across the nation.

sparks....like when the subframe or sway bar or oil pan comes in contact with the road after going over a bump or dip in the road because the car is going too fast?

Explosions like when tires full of compressed air fail and all that air is no longer contained by the rubber tire?

You can be subtle and send a message at the same time by using ways that seem like legitimate accidents.

Same thing here. Maybe someone who has followed this more can give me an answer but what was he doing speeding in Beverly Hills at 4am? My bet is drugs or alcohol are involved. If the FBI really wanted to off the guy, they would've been much more subtle about it.

I don't think there's really any evidence that this was an assassination, but I don't find it surprising that so many would jump to that conclusion considering how quick our gov has been lately to persecute and prosecute reporters who write stories they aren't happy with, and of course the whole drone "we can kill anybody we want, at any time, without a conviction or any evidence" program. People will belief conspiracies even when the powers that be are on their best behavior; when every day seems to bring with it a new, credible, story of government over-reach or sleazy collusion between the wealthy and authority, it's no surprise that this natural human affection for stories gets kicked into over-drive.

Just for my own curiosity about how to interpret your post, how do you see Vince Foster's death?

He killed himself, if memory serves, but that's not the point, is it? The GOP will use the death of this reporter to try to smear Obama, and Democrats in general, in 2014, 2016 and beyond. Why? Because it worked against the Clinton's to some degree years ago. The GOP is good at getting their base riled up with conspiracy tales, and this will be one they use, you can count on that.

Since Obama has some kind of supernatural abilities that we can't understand, it's best to assume that any death can be reasonably attributed to his dark, magical power, even those that occurred before Obama was born.

The usual masses of uninformed conspiracy nuts have come out of the woodwork again. I've seen idiots who can't understand how a car could catch on fire in an accident, or how the bolts of an engine could break free, even though car experts have pointed out that both happen pretty often. Just because the guy was working on a big story, and claimed there was an FBI investigation, does not mean that he didn't get drunk and plow into a tree, or get distracted for a moment, or have a mental breakdown while driving, or THOUGHT someone was tailing him and tried to get away, or got run off the road by one of LA's many crazy drivers with no connections to any "hit squad," or was just the victim of one of the many fatal single car accidents that happen in the US all the time.

The bottom line is, there are a lot safer and more logical ways to bump some body off than to try to orchestrate a car crash on a heavily populated street in Los Angeles. Those homes on Highland are pricey places - I wouldn't be surprised if the police find home security footage that shows Hastings' wreck, or what he was doing moments before the wreck.  Have his family and friends said what he was doing out at 4am?

You know it's a legitimate concern, I just wish we had someone who wasn't as massive of a douche as Snowden is to leak this to the public.

He really is a coward with delusions of grandeur. And just to tell us what most of us already figured was the obvious 6 years ago.

1. Even if Fred Phelps leaked this, I'd find something good to say about the creep. What the NSA is doing is wrong and totally threatens Democracy itself. Governments that spy on their own citizens are looking for any excuse to punish those citizens.

2. The tales about him being a douche stink of a government bullsh*t story put into the press (where media dick-lickers like Chris Mathews are more than happy to spread it around). A total discrediting campaign designed to crush favorable opinion and support for Snowden.

Again, take that stuff with a grain of salt. The Powers That Be just got caught red-handed and they are going to make sure this guy doesn't inspire others.

What the NSA did was so vile that even a  douche thought what they're doing is wrong.

Hastings could've pulled a Bud Dwyer on live tv and the same people saying that the car accident was fishy, would be saying the gun to his head was fishy.

America is infected with crazy/stupid. The longer it takes the sane to do something about it, the more difficult it will be to stop.

Why does that matter? At ALL? He could be the douchiest douche that ever douched and it wouldn't change what he did as being justified and admirable. I could walk in on him ass farking my passed out drunk mom in my bed while my dog was licking his peanut butter covered balls as he blew his nose onto my mint condition Super Man #1 and it wouldn't change the fact he did a service to humanity in general and Americans in particular.

Likely many of the people you hold in high regard from afar would make you cock-punch level angry if you had to spend time 'getting to know them'.

The IRS one is a legitimate concern (although it's not for the reasons people on the right seem to think it is), and the Verizon thing is basically the NSA thing which is really the most serious scandal on your list.

Maybe someone who has followed this more can give me an answer but what was he doing speeding in Beverly Hills at 4am? My bet is drugs or alcohol are involved. If the FBI really wanted to off the guy, they would've been much more subtle about it.

He wasn't in Beverly Hills, he was in Hancock Park. BH is a couple of miles west.

Everything you said above is raw  pejorative idle speculation and conjecture, except for the fact he released info. You don't like the guy based on a couple interviews and speculation and gut feeling (apparently based mainly on his choice of glasses, haircut, facial hair stylings and tone of voice)? Fine. It matters not even in the least. I'm pretty sure he didn't ask you or anyone else to like him or be his besty. It's not about him except in the abstract of using him as a nominal icon for possible punishment, either legal or, in your case, cultural, for not just not shutting up being a good little slave. Nothing needs to be forgiven. Nothing needs to be erased. Except the farking disgusting gov't programs he (re)-brought to light.

Oh, I'm a conspiracy theorist, but my theories revolve around the hypothesis of laziness and apathy.  9/11 was not an inside job involving demolition work, it was the intelligence community and elected officials choosing to walk back anti-terror efforts and cut funding so that something, anything, would get through.  "Strategic incompetence" as the kids say.

Because a conspiracy is not the perfect plot of a cunning chessmaster who knows every action, reaction, angle and vector to a socio-political play.  No, a true conspiracy is someone quietly kicking off a big chaotic and ham-fistedly useful mess and then trusting all the people involved in the mess to start trying to cover IT up as a means of covering their own asses.  It is an entire industry choosing a self-destructive system of extracting wealth from the nation and expecting, as one, despite never talking to each other about it, that the government will bail them out when the time comes.

The real conspiracies are business as usual.

Since Obama has some kind of supernatural abilities that we can't understand, it's best to assume that any death can be reasonably attributed to his dark, magical power, even those that occurred before Obama was born.
