You can turn your  PS3 into a BBQ.  Your turn Xbox!

2013-06-21 05:04:29 PM
I was very excited when I got a PS3 as a wedding gift. "Fantastic!" I thought. "I can play GT5 and God of War 3 and those Uncharted games I've heard so much about, AND have a blu-ray player to boot!"

The games came and went. I cancelled my disc-sub to netflix and went streaming only, so the blu ray discs stopped coming to the house as well.

Now, every six weeks or so when I feel like running a few laps of the top gear test track in GT5, or watching a new release on blu-ray, I fire it up. And every. single. time. I have to wait 30+ minutes for it to update some crap or other.

By the time its done, and I remember it's done, I've long since moved on to something else,
"Oh, I'll watch that movie later, it's not going anywhere." Fast forward about 6 weeks.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

You could just stop connecting it to the internet. Or, you know, turn it on more then every 6 weeks.

You must be so special. My PS3 doesn't update nearly as often, or take so long to update. I use it almost every day for streaming Netflix even if I don't have a game to play. They must make those for special folk like yourself.

If the official forums are to be believed, that's not necessarily the case. There are reports from people with upgraded hard drives that weren't affected as well as people with stock hard drives that were. Of course that thread is turning into a giant butthurt thread and it's pretty tough to go through all 440+ pages, even if you wanted to (you don't).

Meh, I've been around long enough to remember the PCs troubled days. Anti viruses wiping out boot files, games shipping broken and needing day one patches, patches that break the same games later, forced reinstalls, etc...
Shiat happens on all platforms.

/Sony was particularly inept but this sort of thing isn't uncommon.

The Xbox fails at that too. You'd need to CYA because your BBQ would RRoD PDQ.

I did disconnect it for a while, until I discovered it wouldn't let me use my GT5 DLC unless it was signed in to PSN, and it wouldn't let me watch Skyfall on blu-ray without an update.

Now I just try to remember to turn it on and let it do its thing before I start work in the morning if I think I want to use it that afternoon.

Mighty strange definition of 'Bricked'. If you can boot up, log in, download and install an update IT AIN'T BRICKED. It may have lost some sort of functionality, but that isn't the same as being 'bricked'.

TL;DR bricked = doesn't do shiat no matter what

What kind of POS internet connection do you have?  The longest update I can remember was about 5 minutes to download and one or two to install, and that was a major system upgrade, not just a patch for the blu-ray or PSN.

Removing features is not adding features. Adding piracy security is not adding features. Requiring firmware updates to play movies (with no additional functionality) is not adding features.

I was really excited to get my PS3 as a gift.

It was enormously satisfying.   All the menus reacted instantly, THE WAY COMPUTER SYSTEMS SHOULD IN THE FRAKKING 21ST CENTURY.  I could put any disc in it, with any files, and it would play it - and play it *quick*.

Then, about a month later, "a system update is required".

I had not checked out the Linux stuff yet.  Oh well, too bad, they took that away.

More updates.  Take certain video formats away.  No YouTube for a long while.  More updates.  Oh, the Netflix app has to be updated?  Ok... Ah, so now I can no longer browse videos?  Great.  Menus start stuttering.  More updates.   Then the big goof with Playstation Network.  Weeks go by with a frakked up console.  Finally repaired, here's two free games.  Oh, wait, you didn't use the code in the first 2 weeks?  NO FREE GAMES FOR YOU (not that it really makes up for messing the console up in the first place).  More updates.  Some menus are sluggish.  Takes a long while to start.

GT5, the ONLY game I play: let's take away features.  Didn't watch all of those videos under GT Television?  Too bad, they're gone.  More updates.  Less features.

The box I have now IS NOT the same thing I originally had, NOR is it what was supposed to be in the box originally.  "Here's your car.  BTW, a month from now, we're taking those seat covers back.  That radio, too.  Also, you will no longer be able to use reverse, and your key will only unlock the driver's side door.  Also, it will only get 18 mpg instead of 30.  Oh, please sign this 25+ page EULA".

25 frakking page EULA.

Did you hear me?  "To install this update, please read and agree to the following".  30 pages of bs lawyer-ese?  And if I don't agree to it, the console will no longer work????  Isn't that called "extortion", or "blackmail"???

Key difference though is at least with a PC the updates are optional, you can choose to ignore them if you want and keep on truckin'.

I'd put my experience to be somewhere between his exaggeration and your underestimation, the updates were typically 5-10 minutes to download and then another 5-10 to apply against the shiatty default PS3 HDD, and it always wanted to do it at the wrong time and it wouldn't let you even go to netflix unless you went through that song & dance, usually blindly agreeing to a couple more anti-consumer agreements in the process.

To be honest, I understand this. Eventually if there's a heap of significant updates coming through it's a pain-in-the-ass to deal with them when you've got a small window of time you want to play with it (PS+ had the right idea doing updates overnight, but at the moment it's part of a paid service). Usually you alleviate any user-blowback by putting in features that they'd actively persue the update.

Sony's problem for a while now has been the entertainment and DRM sections are calling the shots on the system when really it should have been the PSX division all along. GT5 is one of the best examples of games where they really needed someone on the design team to represent the 'end user' and have the power to cut crap out that gets in the way of the experience.

You must be so special. My PS3 doesn't update nearly as often, or take so long to update. I use it almost every day for streaming Netflix even if I don't have a game to play. They must make those for special folk like yourself.

So, you either have ps+ or a magic ps3. Counting June's update, there has been 3 updates since March 21st. Its pretty consistent after that save for the occasional 4 month stretch but they make up for it by having you update twice in a month.

I really dont have any problem with the 360 at all, it was certainly a toss up for me. I actually was really on the fence (before anything was revealed) and was planning on having an open mind for the next gen but when MS revealed their plans all I could think was nooo-o-o-oooo. I still love to hear people with informed opinions discuss the benefits of each but when the "Xbone is totes teh best thing evar. Lagstation is teh gayz" it makes me laugh a little. Unless those guys were going for a poor attempt at imitating those kinds of people as a joke..

Not sure about Ps3, but the xbox was kind of nice in that if you didn't want to update something like Skyrim or Fallout so you could abuse the sweet glitches, you could simply hit no.

That's something that's annoyed me on all platforms.  Don't patch the glitches that make money or make you invincible, unless they're tied to something else that is broken.  I really dislike that kind of micromanagement of how I choose to play a single-player game by taking out the glitches that people actually enjoy or find useful. It's a disservice to console players especially, because PC players can simply mod/console command their way into it anyhow.

Very true. I got a slim back in 2004 and it's still going strong. It's a replacement for my first PS2 I got soon after it came out, and the only reason I had to replace it was because it was struck by lightning. (My SNES and NES also still work, and Duck Tales still kicks my ass.)

Critatak: satire, it's a bad one.

Which is what makes it good satire. A good troll is just convincing enough to catch some, but the smart people see it a mile away(all too rare, there a real skill involved here, a subtlety but with hints....Any moron can go over the top full retard, we all know the sage advice there, you never go full retard).

A "bad one" is someone who holds up poe's law, indistinguishable from the real deal(also all too popular on fark, being as trying to look like a retard is retarded in and of itself).

No, the one you posted to, while he may actually feel that way(also too popular, troll like a bastard, but still believe the general concept, these people are not simply retarded, but mentally unstable, irrational in an extreme), is typing like that on purpose.

Could be one of many.  Only way to really tell is to compare it to other discussion on the topic. A classy troll is capable of rational conversation, and show's it at least on occasion.

And lastly there's the meta troll, a unique category.  Very very convincing to gain fellowship with the true idiot, but then links out to references that show the idiot why he's an idiot. (I've only seen it once, but it was a neat concept, to snow any given reader but still inspire respect)

neat little CSB about that:  Last night I rebooted my PC and when steam's client came online it wanted me to agree to some new terms and it mentioned in bold text it included something about class action resolution, I clicked decline and it just went away.  I was still able to get onto steam and do stuff, even ordered Dead Island GOTY edition (for $5, sweet) and tried it out.  Not sure what to make of that, hence the CSB.

All the new features require a monthly subscription? Like what? I've only had my ps3 for about 2 years now, and had ps+ for the last 6 months.

While I can't recall any awesome features being added, I can't think of anything that requires a monthly subscription. Unless you're talking about downloading free games from ps+?

Does it only effect certain HDDs?  I've got a third party one in mine, but i've yet to install the update.

I've fully updated my ps3 and I have a 3rd party 500GB HDD in there. It still works perfectly fine

Same here. I have a 500 GB 7200 RPM Seagate in mine, and I was happily playing The Last of Us yesterday evening.
