You can turn your  PS3 into a BBQ.  Your turn Xbox!

I was very excited when I got a PS3 as a wedding gift. "Fantastic!" I thought. "I can play GT5 and God of War 3 and those Uncharted games I've heard so much about, AND have a blu-ray player to boot!"

The games came and went. I cancelled my disc-sub to netflix and went streaming only, so the blu ray discs stopped coming to the house as well.

Now, every six weeks or so when I feel like running a few laps of the top gear test track in GT5, or watching a new release on blu-ray, I fire it up. And every. single. time. I have to wait 30+ minutes for it to update some crap or other.

By the time its done, and I remember it's done, I've long since moved on to something else,
"Oh, I'll watch that movie later, it's not going anywhere." Fast forward about 6 weeks.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

You could just stop connecting it to the internet. Or, you know, turn it on more then every 6 weeks.

You must be so special. My PS3 doesn't update nearly as often, or take so long to update. I use it almost every day for streaming Netflix even if I don't have a game to play. They must make those for special folk like yourself.

If the official forums are to be believed, that's not necessarily the case. There are reports from people with upgraded hard drives that weren't affected as well as people with stock hard drives that were. Of course that thread is turning into a giant butthurt thread and it's pretty tough to go through all 440+ pages, even if you wanted to (you don't).

Does it only effect certain HDDs?  I've got a third party one in mine, but i've yet to install the update.

Meh, I've been around long enough to remember the PCs troubled days. Anti viruses wiping out boot files, games shipping broken and needing day one patches, patches that break the same games later, forced reinstalls, etc...
Shiat happens on all platforms.

/Sony was particularly inept but this sort of thing isn't uncommon.

The Xbox fails at that too. You'd need to CYA because your BBQ would RRoD PDQ.

I did disconnect it for a while, until I discovered it wouldn't let me use my GT5 DLC unless it was signed in to PSN, and it wouldn't let me watch Skyfall on blu-ray without an update.

Now I just try to remember to turn it on and let it do its thing before I start work in the morning if I think I want to use it that afternoon.

Mighty strange definition of 'Bricked'. If you can boot up, log in, download and install an update IT AIN'T BRICKED. It may have lost some sort of functionality, but that isn't the same as being 'bricked'.

TL;DR bricked = doesn't do shiat no matter what

What kind of POS internet connection do you have?  The longest update I can remember was about 5 minutes to download and one or two to install, and that was a major system upgrade, not just a patch for the blu-ray or PSN.

I know, right?  I mean you should switch over to using a PC to game, because computers  never have to update software at all.

Removing features is not adding features. Adding piracy security is not adding features. Requiring firmware updates to play movies (with no additional functionality) is not adding features.

I was really excited to get my PS3 as a gift.

It was enormously satisfying.   All the menus reacted instantly, THE WAY COMPUTER SYSTEMS SHOULD IN THE FRAKKING 21ST CENTURY.  I could put any disc in it, with any files, and it would play it - and play it *quick*.

Then, about a month later, "a system update is required".

I had not checked out the Linux stuff yet.  Oh well, too bad, they took that away.

More updates.  Take certain video formats away.  No YouTube for a long while.  More updates.  Oh, the Netflix app has to be updated?  Ok... Ah, so now I can no longer browse videos?  Great.  Menus start stuttering.  More updates.   Then the big goof with Playstation Network.  Weeks go by with a frakked up console.  Finally repaired, here's two free games.  Oh, wait, you didn't use the code in the first 2 weeks?  NO FREE GAMES FOR YOU (not that it really makes up for messing the console up in the first place).  More updates.  Some menus are sluggish.  Takes a long while to start.

GT5, the ONLY game I play: let's take away features.  Didn't watch all of those videos under GT Television?  Too bad, they're gone.  More updates.  Less features.

The box I have now IS NOT the same thing I originally had, NOR is it what was supposed to be in the box originally.  "Here's your car.  BTW, a month from now, we're taking those seat covers back.  That radio, too.  Also, you will no longer be able to use reverse, and your key will only unlock the driver's side door.  Also, it will only get 18 mpg instead of 30.  Oh, please sign this 25+ page EULA".

25 frakking page EULA.

Did you hear me?  "To install this update, please read and agree to the following".  30 pages of bs lawyer-ese?  And if I don't agree to it, the console will no longer work????  Isn't that called "extortion", or "blackmail"???

Key difference though is at least with a PC the updates are optional, you can choose to ignore them if you want and keep on truckin'.

I'd put my experience to be somewhere between his exaggeration and your underestimation, the updates were typically 5-10 minutes to download and then another 5-10 to apply against the shiatty default PS3 HDD, and it always wanted to do it at the wrong time and it wouldn't let you even go to netflix unless you went through that song & dance, usually blindly agreeing to a couple more anti-consumer agreements in the process.
