infidelic: and a racist for a president

Jamie Foxx?  Did he say something racist?  Can we just grow up and admit that everyone's a little racist and is going to act that way sometimes?  It's as natural as greed or envy or wrath and arose for the same primordial reasons.  Good people can and do work to suppress it, but why do we not care if public people are sometimes greedy or angry but it's the end of the world if they say something racist?

Why does Hollywood do this?  Produce and release nearly identical movies?  Are they hoping to make "attacks on the White House" movies a genre?

I could understand if they released the movies at the same time, to steal the other movie's business, but I don't even think Olympus has Fallen is in theaters anymore.

I guess it's about stealing DVD sales at this point.

Next year will be Fast and Furious 7 (if that holds course) and Need for Speed, with Aaron Paul.

Need for Speed...not sure how that'll work out. The little tidbit they showed at E3 was slightly promising, but it's being directed by the same guy that did Act of Valor. And honestly, the problem with that movie wasn't the directing or the acting (I let that slide because of who most of them are), but the god-farking-awful script and storyline. I guess we'll see how he does with an actual Hollywood production.

Fast and Furious 7...all they have to do is not screw things up.

Shark's Tale wasn't a coincidence though, it was a blatant cashgrab.

born_yesterday Why does Hollywood do this?

Because the genres of brain switching & having babies are THAT nuanced...

It will be interesting to see if Vince Flynn's death will push production on "American Assassin" faster than they are going now.  Only in that, if the franchise takes off, it will eventually get to the point where they have to do "Transfer of Power", and then a bunch of yahoos will say that they ripped off 'Olympus' and this pile of crap.  IMDB shows Bruce Willis being cast as Stan Hurley, so all they need to do is find Mitch Rapp and get it going.

FTFA: "Olympus Has Fallen" had a less popular cast

I don't see how Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Basset, Dylan McDermott, Ashley Judd, and Morgan "Titty Sprinkles" Freeman could be a less popular anything.

Word gets around that studio X is making a movie about Titty Sprinkles and studio Y hears about it and thinks it a good idea. So studio Y makes a film also about Titty Sprinkles because you can't copywrite an idea. Its just that simple as Hollywood is run by accountants and if one bunch of accountants thinks an idea will sell then a 2nd group of accountants will follow.

Lumbar Puncture: The Raid and Judge Dredd

Dredd had a script and was in development well before The Raid and i doubt that an Indonesian film company had a clue about Dredd.

Well you know, we can certainly grow up and part of growing up is not accepting people we dislike for very valid reasons like their racism or their various other comments and actions we find offensive. Nobody says we have to like anyone we don't like and one way to express that is to not support their entertainment efforts. I won't see anything with Jamie Foxx in it, I won't see anything with Russell Brand in it. Both are foul human beings and it gives me no joy seeing anything those entertainers are in. So for me there are plenty of entertainment options that don't include either of those people.  How's that for growing up for you?

I'm guessing that in this case it's because Olympus was a high-priced spec script ($3M plus producer credit, which probably carries points on the gross).

A spec script will often do the rounds before finding a buyer, and either the other studio saw the script, liked the premise, but not the specific story; or liked the story but not the price tag. So they commissioned another writer to do their own take on the same premise. It's perfectly legal and, provided the commissioned writer never sees the original script, more ethical than many Hollywood practices.

Heh.  OK, so "We liked the story, but not enough to pay for it.  You!  Script monkey--write that story.  Add some giant spiders.  And I want the black guy to be funny, not scary.  Do it!"

+ any comedy spec out there can expect to have its jokes/situations swiped by sitcom hacks before they ever start shooting...

Yeah, that's about the size of it.
