mamarita is under strict instructions that there is to be no 'traditional' funeral. The only thing that I ask is that I be cremated (they won't let me be dumped in my pasture for the birds of the air and the beasts of the field to dispose of me) and do with my ashes as they see fit and that any money that would have been spent on a funeral be spent on BBQ and beer for any and all who wish to continue the fun life I have led (Fark is invited)....and if there was one song to be played, may it be this.

Lately, I can't get enough Memphis Minnie so probably my favorite song about farking that manages to be not about farking.

Me and My Chauffeur Blues

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiRoNuw5x4M

Maybe the eulogy can be short.  He was a good man and he liked tasteful euphemisms for wanting to glaze that jelly roll.  Then everyone can get drunk and dance.

2013-06-21 10:04:41 AM
I want to buried, not cremated. I want said burial to be at the foot of a large oak tree, and I want to be buried standing upright and facing east. I also want good boots on my feet, because I still have a long way to go.

I want the wake to be one hell of a party. If they can figure out a way to fudge the local health laws and have me there, sitting upright in a chair, with a beer in my hand, so much the better. NO CRYING.

And I want my funeral song in the church service to be Mozart's Requiem. At the graveside, I want Angel Band.

/ yes, I'm picky. Why do you ask?

I don't want a funeral.  Friends & rels can do as they wish to remember, celebrate or otherwise mark my passing.  But no money wasted on a "funeral"; the cheapest coffin going, because I'm assuming a box of some sort is required.  Absolutely no "visitation" & associated nonsense, swift cremation & scatter me  - preferably somewhere pretty - but wherever is convenient for them will do.

yeah, the story as i recall was his dad was slowly dying, Phil went to go see him pretty regularly, and then on one of the last visits, Phil wanted to write a song for him, enter Hunter.  As hunter describes it, the words came out damn near fully formed. there's a quote in my memory of hunter saying something like, "the words flew out of my pen" or "the paper stole the words from my pen".

not sure if phil wrote the music for that with or without jerry, think the former.  one of the few "Lesh/Hunter" songs.  neithe rjerry nor weir authored it that we know of.

rickythepenguin: Phil wanted to write a song for him, enter Hunter. As hunter describes it, the words came out damn near fully formed. there's a quote in my memory of hunter saying something like, "the words flew out of my pen" or "the paper stole the words from my pen".

per wiki:

"According to lyricist Hunter, Lesh "wanted a song to sing to his dying father and had composed a piece complete with every vocal nuance but the words. If ever a lyric 'wrote itself,' this did-as fast as the pen would pull."  Lesh practiced the song driving to the nursing home where his father lay with terminal cancer.

"The song also featured two musicians who are not in the band. Dave Torbert played bass, while Lesh played acoustic guitar.  David Nelson plays the lead guitar with a Fender Telecaster equipped with a Parsons/White B-Bender, while Jerry Garcia plays the piano. "

Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnno shiat?  I knew "some dude" played bass, but i never knew (or forgot long ago) that that isn't our kid Jerry with those high old lonesome bends and further, didn't know Jerry wsa playing piano on that.  no shiat?

Since I'm being cremated, "Please Don't Bury Me" by John Prine, "The Bird Rock" by Bok, Muir and Trickett, "The Lee Shore" by David Crosby, and "Fiddler's Green" by Marley's Ghost. Before they toss my ashes over the side I want my oldest son to recite this:

"D'ye mind the day when we sailed away an' ran her east by south,
With the howling breeze and the big Horn seas and a roarin' bone in her mouth ? The best hands turned her bucking wheel and dared not look behind and the growling greybeards in our wake, d'ye mind old pal, d'ye mind ? "

rickythepenguin: gfid: IIRC, Lesh wrote this for his father as he was dying of cancer. Good choice.

yeah, the story as i recall was his dad was slowly dying, Phil went to go see him pretty regularly, and then on one of the last visits, Phil wanted to write a song for him, enter Hunter.

I just looked it up on Annotated Dead Lyrics:

The Heavy, What Makes a Good Man....  Ah hell, let's go with the entirety of "The Glorious Dead"

2013-06-21 11:41:00 AM
Start with "Spirit In The Sky" - Norman Greenbaum.  When everyone finishes laughing, "Highway To Hell" - AC/DC at which point everyone should start nodding and saying "Ain't that the truth?"

My last wish is for all my surviving friends and family to have a big BBQ party.  Lotsa good food.  Lotsa booze.  My only request being that they play a songlist I pick out.  All J-Pop, the more girly and squeaky the better.  I figure by the end, there should be a drunken mob of rednecks all headed to my grave to piss on it one last time.  My kinda company.

2013-06-21 11:41:19 AM
I want a marching band to play Chopin's Funeral Sonata in B-flat minor, as well as the other great funeral marches.  I doubt I can get the gun carrage pulled by jack tars like Churchill got in 1965 (as they are hard to come by in the American midwest), but I would settle for my remains to be placed upon a manure spreader pulled by a classic Farmall or John Deere tractor.  People had better cry at my funeral too.

"Those Final Feet" by the Cowboy Junkies.

"Place my body on a funeral pyre,
Cut it loose to float downstream,
Leave it frozen on a mountain-top,
Suspend it high to be picked clean.

You said never to grow old,
But you forgot to tell me how ..."

\Then again, who am I kidding? No one's gonna be there.

2013-06-21 11:44:53 AM
I've told my family no funeral; just cremate me and dump my ashes off the side of a mountain somewhere. But... if I had one, it'd be either Rush's "Nobody's Hero" or Denis Leary's "I'm an  Asshole".

2013-06-21 11:44:57 AM
I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread in the Delaware River... so the talking Heads "Take me to the River" kind of fits.

I want everyone to get their nerdy funk on and hope there is one hell of a party.

Not to mention I have 20 gallons of home made whiskey in a oak barrel out in the shed that I plan on tending to till I kick the bucket, then let my heirs crack it open and have a drink to remember me by... provided ATF doesn't get wind and decide to be a biatch about it.

Emerson, Lake, & Palmer's "Fanfare For The Common Man".

2013-06-21 11:47:26 AM
Don't plan to have a funeral. Oh, I plan to die...but I can't forsee a big ceremony. Wife knows to cremate me, find someone I hated in this world who's still alive, and scatter my ashes all over them before they can run away.

However, these tunes would be at the playlist I'd want my friends to play as they hoisted a beerglass or two in my memory:

"Estonia" by Marillion
"Who Wants to Live Forever" by Queen
"Burn in Hell" by Twisted Sister
"Heaven" by Talking Heads
"Jesus is Just All Right" by the Doobie Brothers
"God" by Tori Amos
Something by Chopin - there was a Prelude he wrote that I love but can't remember offhand what # it was.
Clair De Lune by Debussy, followed immediately by
With Prayers from the Moon by Akino Arai, to close out the set, and I would ask the entire room be completely silent until it is completed.
The encore would be "Epilogue (Nothin' Bout Me)" by Sting

When my father, a Bob Seger fan, passed on, we had the funeral home play "Against the Wind" in tribute. Out of respect for the old man, and because I'm a sick fark, I'd have them play "You'll Accompany Me" while my wife's in earshot. :)

But I'll be dead and either playing a harp, screaming in freakish agony, becoming one with the celestial cosmos, jamming with Hendrix, or just doing nothing...so I probably won't care either way.

2013-06-21 11:47:47 AM
Rob Zombie's "Pussy Liquor":

One two three
Who should I kill?
Every motherfarker running up the hill
One two three
What should I do?
Get farked up and fark up a'you.

Oh wait...funeral? I don't know, sorry. I thought you said "for the entrance to your fight."

2013-06-21 11:47:50 AM

ACunningPlan: I don't want a funeral.

I actually made a point of going to every person in my family, and explaining to them that my final wishes are that they find the least expensive means of disposing of my body allowed by law. If that means a Hefty bag, set out by the curb, so be it.

...but, funerals are for the living, not the dead. I assume they'll ignore my wishes, and that's their prerogative. My point was simply to remind them that they do me no honors wasting their money on a corpse. It's obscene what people what people are willing to spend on misplaced sentimentality...

BillMurraysGhost, tnx for reminding me on pg 3 that Mungo Jerry (or was that Mungojeri? recall it both ways) did San Francisco Bay Blues.  We still sing that in Sweet Adelines, of course not same arrangement.
Already forgot who 'twas early on pg 1, suggested  We'll Meet Again by Dame Vera Lynn.  Arranger in my SwAd chorus arranged that yrs ago, also did Love Letters that we've done in regional contest.
The Irish Blessing is a traditional for barbershop harmony singers of both genders who shuffle off the mortal coil.  Short & sweet, chords ring if well sung (not if poorly sung).

Got this while still in 1st chorus before 2007 merge, for Singing Very Very Well.

I'm surprised this is not the highest and the most common comment.

Late to the thread but this:

LINKIN PARK"Leave Out All The Rest"
I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
'Cause no one else cared

After my dreaming
I woke with this fear
What am I leaving
When I'm done here?

So if you're asking me
I want you to know

[Chorus]
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Don't be afraid
I've taken my beating
I've shared what I've made
I'm strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I've never been perfect
But neither have you

So if you're asking me
I want you to know

[Chorus]
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
Don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting all the hurt inside
You've learned to hide so well
Pretending someone else can come
And save me from myself
I can't be who you are

[Chorus]
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
Don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting all the hurt inside
You've learned to hide so well
Pretending someone else can come
And save me from myself
I can't be who you are
I can't be who you are

ManRay: In my time of dying -Led Zeppelin version as an opening.

For a closer,  Great Gig in the Sky as the pine box is slowly being consumed by fire.

Damn......that's EXACTLY what I had planned

This, as my casket is being carried from the funeral home to the crematory. I want the hearse to blast this as all of my friends & family .chase after it at 3x normal speed:

I have told my wife many times, first donate any bits and pieces anybody wants for whatever reason, all that should be left at that point is a bag of hamburger (heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, major blood vessels, corneas, , gums, skin, face, major bones would presumably be removed for transplants and grafts)

whatever is left, my buddies are to go deep sea fishing and use it for chum

Tool - Eulogy, obviously.

Paul Williams - The Hell Of It

Roll on thunder, shine on lightning
The days are long and the nights are frightenin'
Nothing matters anyway,
And that's the hell of it.
Winter comes and the winds blew colder
While some grew wiser, you just grew older
And you never listened anyway,
And that's the hell of it.
Good for nothing, bad in bed
Nobody likes you and you're better off dead
Goodbye, we've all come to say goodbye (goodbye)
Goodbye (goodbye)
Born defeated, died in vain
Super-destructive, you were hooked on pain
Though your music lingers on
All of us are glad you're gone
If I could live my life half as worthlessly as you
I'm convinced that I'd wind up burning too.
Love yourself as you loved no other
Be no man's fool and be no man's brother
We're all born to die alone, you know, that's the hell of it.
Life's a game where they're bound to beat you
And time's a trick it can turn to cheat you
And we only waste it anyway,
And that's the hell of it.
Good for nothing, bad in bed
Nobody liked you and you're better off dead
Goodbye, we've all come to say goodbye (goodbye)
Goodbye (goodbye)
Born defeated, died in vain
Super-destructive, you were hooked on pain
And though your music lingers on
All of us are glad you're gone

Probably goes without saying, but I haven't seen it in the thread:  However you want to go out, *please* make sure anything usable is harvested so someone else can be helped.  And more importantly, make sure the important people in your life know you want to be an organ donor. It's tragic how many times a family member will override a donor ID when the time comes.  Of course, being a Farker, your liver is worthless, but maybe you have good corneas, or healthy kidneys, or any of the other things that doctors can transplant to people who need them!

Then, yeah, add me to the "burn me up and dump me in the nearest body of water, please" list.

A Man / Me / Then Jim <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_MuX8cjrKA">

But ultimately, gotta end with the trite but unavoidable

Somewhere Over The Rainbow, by Bruddah Iz <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I">

*that's* the kind of funeral we could all only dream of having... hundreds of people who care that you're gone, celebrating your life in one of the world's paradises.  We should all strive, every day, to do something good that will lead to someone being sad to find we're gone -- bleak, maybe, but a sign of living a valuable life.  I know I gotta work on that.

You really wanna watch their heads asplode? How about "This is the Song That Never Ends" and "Henry the Eighth" as a round?

As soon as the female singer finishes the first line:

This is the song that never ends...

The male voice starts in with:

I'm Hen-ery the Eighth I am, Hen-ery the Eighth I am I am...

And it just goes on and on until there is wailing and screaming and gnashing of teeth.

Tammy by Debbie Reynolds with altered lyrics

I hear the cottonwoods whisprin ahead
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy is dead!
The ole hootie owl hootie-hoos to the beast
Tammy! Tammy! Tammys deceased!
Does my nightmare feel what I feel
When she comes near?
My heart beats so gleefully
You'd think that she could hear!
Wish I knew if she knew what I'm dreaming of!
Tammy! Tammy! Tammys defunct!
Whippoorwill, whippoorwill, you and I won
Tammy! Tammy! She's definitely gone!
The breeze from the bayou keeps murmuring harm
Tammy! Tammy! She bought the farm!
When the night is warm, soft and warm
I long for her charms!
I'd scream like a banshee
If she tries me harm!
Wish I knew if she knew I thought her a whore
Tammy, Tammy, Tammys no more!

DIAF ?- The Platters Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
OD? -   Nina Simone Feeling Good
Killed by jealous ex ? - April March Chick Habit

CptnSpldng: Sofa King Smart: If I happen to die in a motorcycle wreck...   Vincent Black Lightning by Del McCoury Band

Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won't do
They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

Heathen! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5V0RkCIaXo

I know it's 'his' song... but if there was ever a song that was written for bluegrass..  this one was...

There will be a playlist for when they have my wake:

-"Seasons of Love", from Rent
-The Indiana Jones theme (the full, eight minute version)
-"Photograph" by Nickelback (if only to piss people off)
-"Greenback Boogie" by Ima Robot
-"Some Nights" by Fun. (Especially for the bit about "wish that this all would end")
-"I Don't Feel Like Dancing" by Scissor Sisters
-"Song of the South" by Alabama
-"Welcome to Paradise" by Green Day

Of course, my wake would be at a bar, and everyone would be required to wear a rainbow flag pin and asked to make a donation to the Human Rights Campaign. I'd have an open bar, and all my friends would be given the opportunity to tell every horrifyingly funny story (good or bad, bad being preferred) about me.

Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush."If I only could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."

It doesn't hurt me.
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You, it's you and me.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh

You don't want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder.
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts.

Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You, it's you and me.
It's you and me won't be unhappy.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
Say, if I only could, oh...

You,
It's you and me,
It's you and me won't be unhappy.

"C'mon, baby, c'mon darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh"

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

If I only could
Be running up that hill
With no problems

Dancin_In_Anson: mamarita is under strict instructions that there is to be no 'traditional' funeral.

This.

And I want at least four of my friends to sing both "Libera Me" and "In Paradisum" from Gabriel Faure's Requiem. It is, after all, written in four parts.

Can I get a sweet tenor to sin"Amazing Grace," too? It's a classic for a reason.

My fiance and I got in a car accident (14 years ago) and she didn't make it. Her parents were kind enough to let me pick out the song that played. I chose "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty and I have never regretted it.

As for me, I would probably choose "Restless Farewell" by Bob Dylan

I always thought it'd be funny to use some crunching doom metal song like Draconian's 'The Quiet Storm' followed by some tearjerking Gothic song like Within Temptation's 'Our Farewell'. My Bible thumping family would cringe in horror, then cry uncontrollably.

I find something about that idea highly amusing.

This video contains content from Sony ATV Publishing and EMI, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.

Also, that wasn't so much a comment about your choice in music (or the fandom of Corey Hart) but the ridiculous copyright fascists that won't let the music of even minor artists (again, not Corey Hart) slip through their fingers. Youtube is great for finding smaller artists to watch for in your town, to promote esoteric genres (gypsy punk is awesome) and otherwise get the word out. Sony and their ilk are just shooting themselves in a fanatical need to control so you have to pay for every note in their collection.
So to offend.
End Threadjack.

Also, everyone I know hates Journey.

The funeral is for the living, the dead people don't care,   but if I had to choose...
img.fark.net
"Party 'til you croak and they take you away.  It's OK"
I imagine the people who knew me would be laughing and crying at the same time, what more can you ask for at a funeral than evidence you should be sent to an insane asylum?

2013-06-21 06:49:09 PM

Bumblefark: ACunningPlan: I don't want a funeral.

Agree with you:)

I'm fairly certain no one will consult me.  However, since a large portion of my friends are professional musicians, I suspect impromptu jamming would take place.  Blues artists are funny that way.

Finally! I like you. For Queen and for the Enya song. My high school science teacher collected the favorite songs of his senior students by survey, and I chose that one. He placed it first on the CD he made for us, a serene interval of tranquility to precede a solid forty-five minutes of ear-curdling screamo/faux-metal selections.

He had good taste.
