In the US that may be true, but overseas I would say more kids play marbles than just about anything.

I played marbles as a kid. We did that in between playing with our Bionic Man action figures at school, during recess.

A few years ago I walked into Wal-Mart looking for some marbles to use to support one of those bamboo plants that grow in water.  The first person I talked to didn't even know what marbles were!  They also don't carry them as toys but they had what I was looking for in crafts, they wouldn't be any good for playing as they wouldn't have rolled cleanly but they looked the same and did fine as a plant support.
