It doesn't count as honesty if you were going in with the intention of cheating and then cry afterwards that you couldn't.

At least they're being honest about it. Seems like if you don't cheat to get ahead around here without getting caught, you can't get ahead.

Maybe I should resort to bullying.

My college was rampant with cheaters, and over time even those that tried to fight it, lost and gave in to cheating just to pass tests.

Taking 20 credits a semester in an Engineering school was the norm to graduate in 4 years. Sadly, it was almost needed with the insane workload.

The problem with cheating is that half an hour later, you want to take another test.

Neat, my old province.

Cheating is more than endemic in China, its a way of life for undergrads all the way down to the elementary school level.  One of my first exams was to a group of Juniors who were Electrical Engineering majors and I caught at least 10 people blatantly cheating (I could have gotten more but I didn't want to go overboard, new teacher and all).  I was outraged and I passed their names and IDs to the department head.

Nothing happened.

I gave a long speech in my next class before the exam that I will tear up your exam and give you a zero if I catch you cheating.  Caught 5 cheaters, publicly embarrassed them, ripped up their exams in front of them and threw them out of the class.  People kept cheating even after seeing me do this.

The saddest part about all of this is the other foreign teachers I knew who did something similar had their final grades overwritten after they went home.  Students who I failed with a 40 average (zero on tests for cheating) had it magically jump to 60, which is passing in China, after I returned to the US.  The administrators protect the students so they don't look bad to their boss, so their boss doesn't look bad to their boss, so their bosses boss doesn't look bad...etc etc.  Its all about saving face, not getting the job done.

TFA:
Mr Li had confiscated a mobile phone from his son and then refused a bribe to return the handset.

And here is the other problem, rampant bribery.  I was bribed TWICE teaching at a university (once by a department head).  The attitude seems to be that you can cheat your ass off and if you face consequences you can bribe your way out.  Or, if you're lucky enough, your father knows someone who knows the head of the Hubei Education Ministry that will sweep it all under the rug.

And before the Fark Snark hits and says "But Southern Logic Company, this happens in the US too!"  Oh i don't doubt it, but your average middle class money doesn't have money put away in case they need to bribe anyone.  Your average person doesn't think when confronted by the police or a bureaucrat who caught you doing something wrong, "How much will get me out of this."  Notice in the quote from TFA above, it was the farking KID attempting a bribe, not his father.

The education system is a joke over there.  It works well for the 1% of kids who are absurdly smart but for everyone else, they spend undergrad playing League of Legends or Crossfire (knockoff version of CS).  Gee, I wonder why bachelor degree holders over there can't find a job?  (Well, partially because there are way too farking many of them and not enough jobs).

I encourage anyone who is convinced China is going to dominate the world or anyone who thinks China does everything perfectly to go live there for a while.  Look around, really observe things.  Its a great country, but the entire structure of government (not an indictment of communism) and public services is terrible.  But that is another rant for another, more relevant, thread.

In my first year at University one day one of the lecturers got fed up with people working in groups on individual coursework assignments. Everyone turned up to pick up their papers and at the top was written:

"This paper is worth an A. You, Sam, Mike and Alex need to work out between yourselves who gets the A and which three get Zero. See me after class with your decision"

A firm but fair lesson that most people learned the first time. Although bribery wasn't really an option and the university heads weren't colluding with the kids to keep their grades up.

Accusing everyone else of racism is currently the most fashionable way of showing everyone else in the debate just how intelligent and progressive you are.

Don't take it personally, they're just following the example set by their leaders.

Invigilator I knew. However I still have problems with sophomore, which is a distinctly American-English word. No one else uses it, except apparently Saudi Arabia and the Philippines (in parts).

wow, just read the whole article.  so much for shaming them to the parents.  the parents were the ones rioting to let them cheat.  what a culture of dishonesty.  i was going to make some 'slanted' or 'slippery slope' joke but after reading that makes me feel ashamed for them.  even if the prime minister comes out to condemn it, it won't change any worldwide perceptions of a stereotype most cultures would be desperate to ditch--that the whole country is duplicitous and untrustworthy.

i play a lot of civ5.  i think i'll go play as Wu Zetian and feel no shame in abusing every exploit I can.  (if you play it a lot you'd know the AI has way too many holes for exploits.)  It's totally ok with her now.

No worries big.  I was just being snarky.  Didn't think anyone would actually bite on my faux racism.  I mean I used the phrase "shifty oriental"

Somewhat related CSB:

My last job was in a datacenter for a large global ISP.  Part of our backbone extended into China and we had a number of Chinese customers who colocated their equipment state side.  DDOS attacks from chinese sources were an every day occurrence.

One day we happened to have one of our nicer Chinese customers in the facility and he overheard us talking about a China sourced DDOS that was going on at that moment.  And he told us that in China that's just what you do.  You attack your business rivals.  It's just SOP over there.

To him it was just normal.  I can't really say I'm shocked, but there's definitely a twisted morality that's prevalent over there.

You'll see a lot of that sort of thing if you read newspapers produced in countries where English isn't the native language.  Non-native speakers, even (or especially) those who have studied English a long time and have a great vocabulary, have little sense of which words native speakers actually use and which English words exist in the dictionary but are almost never used (or even encountered) by native speakers.

I'm sure the reverse is true as well.

I had a similar experience. In our case the work was worth 10%, so the teacher gave some a 10, some an 8, and some a 6. All for identical work...  I got a 6, but how could I complain ?
