"One individual said, 'I love crab legs. You know, the big king crab legs. I love those, but we haven't been able to have them in our house for who knows when. But I'm standing in line behind a guy who has those in his basket and I'm looking longingly like, when can I ever make enough again where our family can have something like that.' And then he sees the food stamp card pulled out."

Or maybe it was a regular bank card or credit card that was similar in color to a food stamp card and the person was mistaken. Or maybe the person who was buying the crab legs looked like someone the commenter thought shouldn't be buying crab legs, so he assumed he was using a food stamp card when he saw him pull a card out to pay for them.

I don't give a god damn what people buy with their food stamps. If they're poor enough to need them, leave them the fark alone. Jesus Christ, we have billionaires who don't pay taxes, and the media and politicians have done a fantastic job of focusing the blame on the poors.

Exactly this.  It's like having a patient riddled with cancer and you're focusing on the acne problem on his back.

This is more likely the case, of course... There's nothing more infuriating that some wealthy politician whining about how good poor people have it in this country. These callous assholes have no shame. They'll hand out money like it's going out of style to other wealthy and connected people without batting an eye; they'll force the military to buy things they don't want or need so they can keep those juicy campaign donations from well-heel defense contractors in their districts, and while doing all of that, they'll pontificate about the poor and unemployed "being dependent on government" and "out of control spending" and do everything in their power to gut and eliminate programs to help the poor and unemployed.

Bastards. Every single one of them.

Both of them have almost nothing and yet the one poor guy is focused on how the other poor guy is getting over on him.

It's beautifully done, how all the attention and fight and bitterness is kept down amongst themselves. Blind them with crab legs.

Yeah, I'm sure there are TONS of people feasting on caviar and king crab legs using their monstrously enormous $134 of SNAP benefits a month.

2013-06-21 10:28:43 AM
It is NOT anyone's business how people spend money on food stamps until I get to tell the rich farmers where they can spend their subsidies.

Is that $134 just for one person cause wow I do the grocery shopping for 3 people and we get by on $200 a month.

2013-06-21 10:30:44 AM
Did anyone actually go check the price of the King Crab Legs?  They could have been reduced and the cheapest meat item for sale that day.

Crab legs? Sweet! I'm gonna quit my job right now and live like a king on SNAP and welfare! So long, suckers, I'll wave at you when I roll past in my Caddy!

Louie "Gomer" Pyle is a special kind of stupid.

ecmoRandomNumbers: I don't give a god damn what people buy with their food stamps. If they're poor enough to need them, leave them the fark alone.

This. As a society, we ought to encourage these people to buy the "good" food instead of the cheap food. Quality meat and vegetables are relatively expensive. Yes, foods bulked up with HFCS are cheap, but that doesn't mean "better." All these hand-up-not-hand-out type people ought to be grateful when SNAP cards are used to buy nutritious food. "Malnutrition-lite" will help keep a family on the dole for generations.

But they're disingenuous assholes anyway, most of them.

Spend those food stamps on alcohol, king crab won't make the shame go away.

I buy ammo for my AR-15 with food stamps. Do Republicans find THAT acceptable?

2013-06-21 10:33:56 AM
I've seen it done many times.  It's frustrating because they're eaither wasting thier money buying luxary items, or they have more than enough disposable income and don't need public assitance.

I'm all for welfare reform and find it amusing that the sheer mention of it drives liberals into a pant shiatting rage.

2013-06-21 10:34:17 AM
Funny that. I wonder what Rep Louie Gohmert is buying on the government dime?

There was an article about 2 years back about so-called Food Stamp Foodies; artists, English majors and other bohemians who liked to cook tasty meals on their food stamp budget.  The response was vicious.  For some reason, some people think that if a hipster can eat organic kale and lemon zested chicken on a food stamp budget, when their wife/mother can't put a Sam's Club hamburger on their plate for twice that amount of money, the hipster must be doing something wrong.

Whether or not what Ghomert Pile says is true, the underlying idea behind his statement is that poor people should be forced to eat like poor people, or they do not deserve our sympathies.  If it looks like a poor person is doing better than a middle class person, even if it's through extreme couponing, rigid budgeting, or any other trait we think virtuous people should have, that poor person needs to be smacked down.

This is the 3rd or 4th "OMG crab legs" thing I've seen this week.

Are crab legs the new 0bamaphone or welfare queen in a Cadillac?

Apparently.  Because some guy in WI took his gf's card and actually did buy lobster or something with it.  Then was promptly busted for trying to sell them in the parking lot for cash.

So EVERYONE on food stamps is a crab leg buying, lobster dipping welfare whore!!!

ALL OF THEM ARE!

As for an actual response, I'm curious what you eat off of that money. $200 a month for three people is about 70 cents a meal. I sometimes have trouble finding canned vegetables for that amount of money.

I think we're missing a point for bi-partisan agreement here...  crab legs are motherfarking tasty.

/Save the shells, and put them back in the water and boil till it reduces significantly
//You now have a good base for a crab chowder you can cook at a later date (we usually use the fake crab for this)

It's kind of the same thing as people hating unions these days.  In the past, people would look at pay inequity between them and their bosses, see that they weren't making a living wage, and see the union shop across town not having these issues.  And they would ask "Hey, why aren't I getting decent pay like those guys?  Maybe I should join the union."  Now, thanks to corporate PR campaigns, people look at union places and say "Hey, those guys are making more than me!  Screw those guys!  They should be as destitute as me!"

I've heard it called the Sled Dog perception.  The dog in the front can see everything, and how beautiful it is.  Everyone behind him though just sees nothing but assholes.  They just look ahead, sees the asshole slightly in front of him, and says "Man, screw that asshole.  Why is he in front of me?  Does he think he's better than ME?  Screw that asshole."

That comes to about 75 cents per meal per person. Would you like to try to come up with a more plausible lie?

Did they get some asparagus too? I know he wouldn't be casting aspersions if they did.

I eat very healthy and it doesn't cost that much.  A sweet potato: 20 cents a meal; oatmeal: 20 cents a meal.

If I pulled out a food stamp to buy some shrimp; they'd probably think I'm living the high life... No... the high life is in boxes and cans and restaurants

Well, he did say that's just what he pays in grocery bills.  They might eat out a lot, and doesn't enter into the final tally for groceries.  Disingenuous at best, but if it's good enough for politicians...

When Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water,  and let down the nets for a catch."

Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."

When they had done so, they caught no fish and their nets had become entangled with seaweed. They returned to Jesus, who had just finished feasting on a tasty platter of crab legs.

When Simon Peter saw this, he returned with his fellow fishermen and fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Lord, why did you ask us to cast out our nets with nothing in return?"

Jesus wiped the stench of shellfish and freshly squeezed lemon from his fingers on Simon Peter's tuft of hair and said unto Simon, "Hey, poors, I haven't had these crab legs in a long time. I love crab legs. You know, the big king crab legs....they haven't been in my house for my dad knows when. And I'm seeing your crab leg nets and baskets and whatever the hell you guys use, and I'm looking longingly like, when can I ever get my fingers on those tasty crabs without sharing them."

Jesus pointed out to the waters with one hand while licking the fingers of his other hand, "You poors really should try for some bluefin tuna. Go cast your nets now. Trust me on this."

Nothing new for greedy bastards fiscal conservatives.  You need an enemy to unit you base behind.  Reagan had welfare queens and college students two groups unlikely to vote for him who he could tell the rubes were stealing THEIR money.  Now we need to cut the budget so to make ourselves feel better about cutting food aid to children we come up with apocryphal stories about cheats eating luxury goods off the tax dollars of real Americans

2013-06-21 10:44:42 AM
Obviously the people on food stamps should be eating gruel.

2013-06-21 10:46:20 AM
If all these people are buying crab legs with food stamps, isn't that good for the crabbing industry, who then use that money to make jobs? Why are you so anti jobs Republicans?

Yea, I was going to question that as well. There are three people in my family (me, wife, 10 year old daughter) and while I don't do the majority of grocery shopping, I do enough to estimate we spend close to twice that. Fresh produce alone is probably $100/month (can't eat canned veggies... too much salt).

2013-06-21 10:47:40 AM
Wait.  I thought we should cut food stamps because they spend on their money on candy, beer, lottery tickets, and tobacco?

2013-06-21 10:47:49 AM
It blows my mind that the party driven in a large part by the religious in this country are always so butthurt that we help poor people not starve for barely a blip out of the bloated budget, which we spend most of on the MILITARY

2013-06-21 10:47:59 AM
Wow, I bet that poor person kept their birthday crab legs in a refrigerator too!  Just livin the high life...
