You remember that thing we had about 30 years ago called the Korean conflict? And how we failed to achieve victory? How come we didn't cross the 38th parallel and push those rice-eaters back to the Great Wall of China?

Tell me why! How come? Say it! Say it!

Spraying with automatic weapons fire is not sniping.

It is in fact an engraved invitation for really heavy return fire.

The threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

They achieved victory.
To be specific, they failed to enforce the peace treaty.

/one bombing run would probably have sufficed.

That's not sniping, it's "harassment".  It's the war-time equivalent of leaving a flaming bag of dog poop at someone's front door.

"Hensinger says: 'We sent out patrols during the day, and found a blood trail one morning. Otherwise, we never found him."

In other words, all we managed to do is shoot a stray dog.

The map were irrelevant.  What mattered was who was actually living there.

Viet Cong sniper began spraying automatic rifle fire on Hensinger's base in Phu Tai, near the coastal city of Da Nang.

I always considered a sniper to be more specific target wise. Less pray and spray.

I'm currently reading a book about fast FACs interdicting on the Ho Chi Minh trail(Misty pilots). Their term for what they were bombing was "smoliage", smoke and foliage.

On a side note, one of the Misty pilots in the book was Dick Rutan.

We (well the UN) got well beyond the 38th parallel and almost to the Yalu river which borders China.  Then the Chinese army swept in.  We did not nuke or otherwise bomb China or the bridges over the Yalu in an effort to keep the war from becoming a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

The archduke story is silly.  Austria-Hungary had plans on Serbia, which they saw as a podunk that they could run more productively.  Things were running fine for them except Serbia was able to enlist Russia to their aid.  This made things rather dark for them so they asked Germany for help.  Then France and England decided they didn't wanna miss out. . .

Funny thing about this is that a load of you sniveling whiners and know it all's who probably never experienced anything more than a stubbed toe , broken nail
or a bad hair day and never been fired on by someone really intent on killing you in a country and
a war YOU didn't want to be in.   AND you did everything in your power to stay alive at WHAT EVER MEANS were at your disposal.

A shiat load of us DID NOT want to be there, damn it   I was going do what ever to go home and take ALL my people with me.

It was SURVIVAL by ANY means possible, WITH ALL resources at your disposal. It is really easy for some of you sit ( hide) behind your keyboard and make judgement calls. Ha.

But 95% of you never had to experience this terror and just stupidly comment out of lack of REAL experience and intelligence.

If it meant using a 10lb sledgehammer to kill a very annoying little gnat that had the power to kill or maim you, then you used it without a second thought!

You wanted to get back to THE WORLD on that freedom bird.

War is just plain stupid.  After it's all said and done what was gained?  What did the "winners" gain?     And the "victims" from both sides?  THE COST?

Politicians who commit us to war for whatever bullshiat reason are criminals.    I survived and most those under me did not wind up on the Wall.

Nightmares are still there, BUT, NOT as bad.  Just remember that.   Those who fought are deeply changed for LIFE.   Time has past, but the memories forever linger.

And for what it is worth. I, till  this day HATE thinking about this and reliving those days, mostly all combat vets have these sentiments.    PEACE.    Wouldn't it be wonderful?

I'm not sure if you're for real.  But "War is just plain stupid," caught my eye.  When I traveled several thousand miles to participate in an anti-war (Iraq) protest in San Francisco as a college kid, the sign I made said simply "War is Stupid".  I didn't know how else to express my disapproval.  Humanity has dissected unnecessary wars morally, religiously, economically, politically, psychologically, every way possible, and unnecessary wars are really just.. they're just stupid.  I just don't  understand why we as citizens let them happen.

Anyway, if you are for real.  Thank you for your service, even if it was involuntary.  Your nation let you down sending you into an unnecessary war, but you went, you served, you did what your nation asked you to despite your personal objection, and as a citizen I thank you and I'm sorry we let you down (though I wasn't even born then, I'm still a part of this nation).
