A three legged cat is fine.  I've had one and she got around just fine.  Two legged; that's what pawstands are for.  I've got to draw the line at diapers though.  I rarely have time enough to change my own, nevermind the cat's.

We can only hope that there's someone out there willing and able to give Virginia a forever home. I'm happy that she's so loved at the shelter, but she deserves a home of her own.

Wow. I'm not really a cat person (have always preferred dogs, despite the headaches), but this article stirred me, emotionally.

Nice post, subby.

Well said Bathia.  My sentiments exactly.  I do hope her new humans will be able to supply more kittens for her to nurture.

I'd love to, but I neither live in Texas nor are we allowed to have pets at our apartment complex. I'll just love and send good vibes to Virginia from afar.

And just in case you didn't already know it, all pets are welcome on Caturday. :-)

Headline from last Caturday weekend: Ottawa residents are deporting unwanted squirrels to Quebec, where they will starve because they don't know the French word for acorn
Tried to comment on  tale of Rottweiler saving chihuahua from being a coyote's lunch, in the Open section.  Musta been deemed inappropriate somehow, tho don't really understand why.
#8 HarmonyFestival is in full cry; we needed to go yesterday to Take Sound, this AM to Take More Sound, tomorrow afternoon to Move Sound to Engineering Hall where Campers' Show'll Be, then Saturday for goodly part of day. Concluding show with sponsoring chori (mine, Plumbicon;s & Southern Gateway the Big Green Contest Machine), performances by Campers' Chori (young men & young women), plus any Campers' QTs they rustle together if deemed adequate. This'll all be at brand spanking new Talawanda HS south of Oxford. Plumbicon's pleased, as their construction & tech gear purchases are hugely better than Mason's, which was done by untrained monkeys.  Pffffphft!

Greetings All... TGIC !.. been waiting for this.. home at last !    I will be hiding this weekend..  from those who want me to do things... everything here is a mess, and will get unmessed this weekend.. I will answer the cell phone, but will say that I am out of town or something.... very sure that both trash cans will be filled with grass clippings.. did weed and feed about a month ago.. the weeds went... and apparently the feed portion just kicked in.. grass is growing an inch a day, and that is not an estimate..... Fred is slightly ticked that he can't find the tennis ball in the grass.. has really been in play mode lately.. great to see that..

Issues with both computer & trying to post here.  Just tried to put one up, said whatever equiv of Accepted is, but it went Off Yonder into the ozone.
Ginger's typing too, putting in long strings of numbers (Normal Catlike Typing. PawSense is NOT sounding off).
Mutts this AM:  Mooch's Dear Diary.  No doubt about it -- water drunk from the faucet just tastes better.
Unsure When or If salsa of last Caturday will ever be possible.  Know I missed at least 10 pgs in the midst, not willing/able to find/make/take time anytime soon.  But that too is why there are The Farkives --
I weary, may be trying to overdo to get caught up. Could use  some zzzzz time, as Plumbicon did when we got home from Oxford midday & had lunch.
Speaking of which, as I didn't last Caturday: the wedding&reception last Sun at Lodge left this great big pan of mac&chs, I maya said.  Took all Mon AM to divvy it up. Didn't count, but methinx there could be at least 20 containers & ziplock sandwich bags full.  All now friz.  Pan left in warmer overnight.

Hello everybodeee!

Raven's buddy 'John' from the group home went out and got a mewbie of his own.
Ructions and ranting...he went the 'forgiveness rather than permission' route. Anyway, little Casper (so named because she appears, flits and then vanishes) is a dilute tortie...silvery-grey with a bit of pink frosting on her face. Very sweet...but a couple weeks too young to leave mom...her eyes are just starting to turn color.

I got the house a rather nice cat tree...it's hard to 're-direct' behavior if there's nothing to re-direct it towards. I'm also campaigning very hard for not de-clawing...offered to make the 'Soft Paws' route one of MY tasks.

John and Casper seem to have bonded well...but he's a bit disappointed that Casper and Raven weren't instant BFFs. I keep trying to reassure him that they will sort things out...just it's going to take a little time. The omens are favorable...nothing worse than hissing on first meeting, and there's been at least one 'conversation'/staring contest sans any rude noises.

~*~*~*~*

I'm taking Riktor to the vet tomorrow. He's gotten awfully thin. He turned 11 this month, so he's into 'possible bad kidney territory'. I hope not...I've tried to feed them so as not to screw up their kidneys.
Wish us luck...I love that little cat so much...

Sugarbear Update:
Okay, I got my boy home last Monday. He had his operation Friday and spent the weekend recuperating at Mountain Vista Animal Hospital. He had to have his leg amputated because it was cancerous. The tumor was just in too deep and that was the only possible treatment. But I wasn't aware of how much leg the vets were going to amputate. I was planning on asking some model builders I knew with access to a 3D printer if they could build Sugarbear a prosthetic leg. But after I got to Mountain Vista and they brought Sugarbear out to me I knew that wouldn't be possible. There wasn't anything left to attach a prosthesis to:
Maybe NSFW http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg235/Themightyhaggis/DSCF0614-Sma l l.jpg
I have to be honest and say that I'm still kind of in shock.
We brought him home that same Monday. For the first couple of nights he stayed in his kitty bed, obviously in a little pain and feeling more than a little grumpy: Again Maybe NSFW  http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg235/Themightyhaggis/DSCF0619-Sma l l.jpg
The other cat, Zooty (named after a Babylon 5 character) took awhile to get used to Sugarbear's appearance. A couple of times it got nasty, but that's all smoothed out now I hope. Last night there was a breakthrough of sorts in that Sugarbear wanted up into my bed. To make it easier on him, I got rid of the metal frame and sat the boxframe square on the floor. I then took a milk crate I was using to hold small parts and a plank to build an incline at the foot of the bed so he would have an easier time getting in and out of bed.
Sugarbear insisted though in jumping up into bed with only the one back leg, although Zooty seems to like the incline as his new fort.
Sugarbear has another appointment tomorrow. He looks like he's going to make it.
I would like to take this moment to thank a particular mystery Farker for making Sugarbear's operation possible by donating a fairly substantial amount to his veterinary tab. Without that one wonderful person, I probably would've had to put my furry baby to sleep.
Currently I owe Mountain Vista $408. After tomorrow, the bill should be about $425 (MVAH is giving me a discount). I'm afraid that I am still in need of help.
Mountain Vista Animal Hospital is still taking donations for Sugarbear. The account number is #17261. They don't have PayPal, but they are taking donations over the phone.  All donations will go directly to Mountain Vista and none to me.
Mountain Vista Animal Hospital is located at 4675 East Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV 89121. The telephone number is 702-458-8808 and the Fax is 702-458-8796. Mountain Vista Animal Hospital's website is www.mvahvetlv.com (I'm still job hunting, but the only serious offer I've gotten is asbestos removal at $3.00 an hour).
Well, that's it for this week. I want to thank everybody for helping, especially that one wonderful person. If it weren't for you guys, well, I'm seeing a side of the human race I've never seen before and it's beautiful. Thank you all.

Glad Sugarbear is doing so well. I know just how you feel. My boy Boots nearly died a month ago from having a blocked bladder. If it weren't for one of my daughter's friends and my MiL I would have had to put him down as well. I still owe my daughter's friend 400 dollars, to be paid back in full July 11 when I get my first full pay from my new job that i'm starting tomorrow.

syzygy whizz: Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

Good luck with Ricktor...keeping fingers and paws crossed for a non-eventful vet visit!! :D

Possibly Stupid Question:

OK, so all four of the Oreo-Ninja Clowder got their Revolution application...
then Wimsey Whyte-Cat goes and 'helps' my neighbor fix a particularly greasy car.

If I give him a bath will he need another application?

/ That stuff ain't cheap!

You should be able to give them a bath as soon as 2 hours after you apply it, as the active ingredient of Revolution gets absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin.  Once the goo is completely dried, its job is done.  The medicine then stays inside the cat's system for a month or whatever it is.

Silly Wimsey.  Doesn't he know what coveralls are for?

Have fun at bafftime.  :)

What she said!  Perhaps he just switched to low-fat gophers and it's as simple as that.  Worrying about one's furkids can really stress one out though.  Hugs to you.

Good Meowning!I have had my morning lovins from Eli. He is now outside enjoying his natural litterbox. I have found that he will come back about an hour later for noms, and a snooze. By that time the mailman has come and gone. :)

Coelacanthso happy to see you kitteh is doing so well. As soon as the icision heals he will be jumping and running...cats are good that way! And Btw..the vets did a great job. Very clean surgical site. They do good work there! I wonder if they would let you work some of your debt off? Clean cages, walk pooches etc? Worth a thought.

Lessee, hope I don't lose this one like just a few min ago.
syzygy_whizz I think, gd luck with Riktor at the vet.  When Casper can safely leave her mum, mayhap John at the place can adopt her.  She sounds extremely cute -- Pikki who lets us bunk in with her is dilute tortie.
Coelacanth, glad to hear Sugarbear's surgery appears to have gone well.  Since he retains command of remaining 3 legs, unlike Virginia in Tale Of Wk,he can make it up onto bed when he chooses!

Little Casper is already in residence at the group home...has been for about 3 weeks now. Even though too young to leave Mum, she's probably in a better environment now than she would have been. Somebody trying to sell kittens when they're still babies...grrrrrr

She's getting better care (and LOTS of luvs), and I sprang for some KMR. Told John where to get the next batch, and that she'd probably need it for a few weeks.
She's active, playful, curious, affectionate...seems happy, but she may never learn to walk.
Except when she's playing, her feet do not hit the floor. John's 'training' her to ride on his shoulder.
D'aaaaawwwww....

Baby Kittehs are finally out of my bedroom and now in the bathroom.  They started climbing out of the box they were in and getting stuck under the bed, so time for them to move to another room so the wife and I can finally get some sleep.  They'll be 4 weeks old on Sunday, and have now learned that they can all play with each other.  So we have now reached the cute and adorably mobile stage.  Mom is beginning to look a little haggard, but I'm guessing that is normal.  Anyway, Happy Caturday everyone, and enjoy the antics of the Italian / Asian fusion babies.

Papaya is a little on the aggressive side right now, so only I can handle him.  Not sure if it's just growing pains, or if he's ticked off at us, but that tail of his brings serious pain when he whips you with it.  But the turd loves his greens and especially loves blueberries, just like the beardies do.

catmandu: captain feedback: Sickapie: *stumbles in*

ohai everybuddee.  Happee Caturday.

So glad that Sugarbear made it through surgery and is going to be ok.

I'm in a funkee.  Just my depression kicking in.  Money issues.  Little Pie's problems.  Everything coming to a head.  But, as long as I continue taking my happee pills, I'll be ok I guess.

ME THREE

Me four. I've been trying to save up to refill my prescription but the last time I had enough cash I got a flat tire and had to buy a new tire instead. Trying again to save and hanging in there until I can take the meds again.

and a couple of cats:

laulaja! First, thank you for the tank/tee shirt. It is teh awesome! Second, I am so sorry to hear that someone got in and took what wasn't theirs. I really worry about that, with all the tools in hubbies workshop. And I don't always remember to do it. Hope the police find the finks.

Catmandu, check with your pharmacy, some drug companies have programs for people who can't afford their meds. No sense being miserable if you know of a med that works for you. ((hug)).

This one doesn't. They used to but discontinued the program for this particular med (my MD can't get enough to provide me with samples either).

Well, that sort of stinks. And I am guessing there isn't a generic? onion on the belt moment Meds cost entirely too much these days! also get off my lawn! Or stop parking your car in front of my house for days on end. Use your driveway and um..garage??? New peeps across the street. Elderly Mom/Pop and daughter/hubby/kid. Supposed to be a single family dwelling...I can't imagine that they even have room to turn around with that many people in the house!

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Baby Kittehs are finally out of my bedroom and now in the bathroom.

Wow. You would have hated the neighborhood I grew up in. My family had my grandparents,my parents, me and my sister and the dog and only 1 bathroom. At least 4 houses on the street had 4 or more kids , again with only 1 bathroom. And once all the kids in the neighborhood learned how to drive and bought cars parking was first come first serve after we filled up the driveways. We didn't block anyone's driveway but we did get real good at learning to backout of a driveway without hitting anything and excellent at parallel parking.

I know that once an Rx goes generic, my Dr. can't give out samples.  Now "can't" as in ins. won't let her or "can't" as in won't, I'm not sure.  Either way, it sux, because if I run out before Mr. Pie get paid, then I have to wait.  So, I'm sort of in the same boat as Catmandu.

I was thinking the same thing.  After all that activity and taking care of kittens, if you send her to someone's house to sit around and do nothing, she probably won't enjoy herself.

I would like to take this moment to thank a particular mystery Farker for making Sugarbear's operation possible by donating a fairly substantial amount to his veterinary ta ...

I know its a big shock but he'll actually heal better and move around better without the entire limb. The way they're bodies are, stumps can be more of a hindrance than a help, especially if they weren't born with the stump.

Hoping Sugarbear is up and running soon and hope to make a donation next Caturday :)

Gah!

What a crazy week!

I'm keeping a close eye on my friends in Calgary, watching the flooding.
I'm pretty glad I am not living there right now. I know one of the places I used to rent is now "sleeping with the fishes".

I started my prep for my full body CT scan on monday.
The side effects list I was given to watch out for considering my current health state is a crazy amount of pages.
Hell they should have just given me full radiation to do this weekend in order to do this, may as well go all the way - ugh.
I can tell this is going to be the opposite of fun for the next few days.
Maybe I'll start to glow in the dark by the time Sunday night rolls around :P
Doesn't help my being nervous is being amplified knowing my doctors are on edge.

I saw this and thought it very captionable. Just goes to show, don't drive through standing water!

I know someone who knows him and Momo.
Apparently these two have generated more attention than the entire areas hit by the flooding combined - and even internationally! One of the news outlets interviewed his mom and she said her son hasn't been paying attention so he doesn't realize how many people have taken an interest in them and have been asking if they were ok :3

Also the water was rising faster than people could drive out of it, I know from first hand accounts from friends who said when the water came rushing in, people didn't have time to get out of their vehicles and were trapped in them. And I'm sure it was double, triple pants crappingly terrifying for those who got trapped and can't swim.

flash floods blow goats.

*giggles* Reminds me of when I had a radioactive iodine heart test, and the nurse (a huge, rather humorless dude) was explaining all the side effects and stuff while he was injecting me with the crap, and I just could not resist pulling his chain...the conversation went sorta something like this...

Me: So, am I gonna glow in the dark?
Him: No.
Me: Not even a little bit?
Him: No.
Me: Are you sure?
Him: Yes. (the man was obviously not known for his loquaciousness)
Me: Well, why not?
Him: The chemicals I am injecting will be expectorated from your body when you urinate.
Me: Cool! So my pee will glow in the dark, right?
Him: No, Mr. sherpa, your urine will not glow in the dark.
Me: Well, why not?
Him: *confused look, as in did I not just explain this/can i kill this guy now?*
Me: Well? Why won't you let me glow?
Him: *runs off to bring the Doc in*
Doc: Would you kindly stahp that?
Me: *innocent look* Whut I do?

2013-06-22 12:13:56 AM

I took this from my front yard at 7:45 tonight.  There's around 13 fires burning in the mountains. I could see three distinct plumes, I have never seen anything that that in the 33 years I've lived here.  There's a really small town (pop. 377) in southern Colorado named South Fork (not to be confused with South Park which is further north) and they're afraid it's going to burn. They've surrounded the town with 32 fire engines in hopes that they'll be able to save it.

They only thing I need to be concerned about where I live is the really bad air quality.  It's so weird to walk outside and smell the pine smoke from the mountains.

I was having some funz on Ancestry.com the other day with my mom and I found out my maternal great grandmother's maiden name was Pizza.  Pronounced peeza, not slice of peetsa.  My mom's like, "I never told you that?"  Ah, nope.  What a riot.  Miss Pizza came over on the boat from Italy.  Made the bestest eggplant parm ever.  I miss my Nona.

And on that note, I'm off to bed.  See you in the am.

Hah, that's McDonald's for you.  You know it's bad when their marketing strategy highlights the novelty of food products containing something "real"!  They probably use "non-dairy petroleum-based radioactive hormone-enriched milk-like liquid soya product" elsewhere on their menu.  Don't know about in the US, but in Canada if it isn't actual milk from actual cows, it's illegal to call it milk!

Blargh.  Let's talk about something else!

I know Dr's and clinics get all the "samples" of quite a number of meds. Maybe you can ask your Dr or another if they can give you them?
That's what I'm currently doing as I'm jobless and penniless - most Dr's are happy to give them - it's what they are supposed to do with them and most just end up getting wasted.

They seem pretty well staffed, but I had another idea. Because of the cancer threat, it's been suggested that I give Sugarbear anti-oxidants like fish oil and a dog supplement made with blueberries. Well, the only plant I can grow is catnip and I was thinking about a catnip/blueberry treat in the shape of a Hershey's Kiss....

spinach gunk: AlienDandelion: spinach gunk: Granville Street never fails to amuse me.  Saw this yesterday while walking to the bus:

"Just takin the cat out for a smoke, brb."

There's a lady up on Commercial drive that walks her cat and her chihuahua. She told me that her cat got super stressed when she took the dog for a walk so she thought she'd try to bring the cat along.
Turns out the cat loves the walks more than the dog and gets more attention :3

Aww, that's so cute!  Everybody wins!  :)

I saw someone walking a bunny around Trout Lake once.... never a cat though!

Glad to see you here today, hope your scan goes OK.  Please keep us updated.
As someone else mentioned above, hope you don't get tired of the phrase "hang in there", because I'm going to say it again!
Hang in there girlie!  You *will* get through this.  Big hugs from us!

do you remember when I posted a picture of the person I saw in New Westminster walking their chicken?
/good times
//pretty sure people will walk anything on a leash around here...heck I used to see people walking other people o_0

Hello! A quick dash in (Yay! I can post this week!) Before I go back to the grind.

My boys, Barby and TC are well, if I'm semi concious in a few hours I'll see about posting a picture or two of them. It's Miller Moth Season in Colorado and they've been helping with keeping them under control (Ie, tearing up the house after a flying protein treat while I try to sleep).

This week I'm taking the black guy in to get shaved (Muahaha), and today I'm spoiling them and myself with a brand spanky new air conditioner! Woohoo comfort! Plus it helps when you have two hot cats curled up against you, TC has a habit of sleeping at the small of my back. Barbossa just sleeps on me, be it my chest or my arm. I'm lucky to have cuddlers but give a girl some room, please!

Especially if you sleep in the day. I work overnights at a local hotel and when it hits 100f degrees Fahrenheit my apartment turns into a roaster (part of the reason why Barby is getting shaved).

Add in two little hot bodied furrbabies on the bed... I'm surprised I'm not well done when I wake up!

How are you? I'm happy to see you, and everyone for that matter here!

Cat For Adoption - Please Help - DC/Northern VA/MD- Can Travel

img.fark.net

Hi - I hate to post this in a Caturday thread but we have a cat that we need a new home for. The cat in question is one of the best cats in the world and we are sure whoever adopts her will be thrilled to have her. She's the sweetest and lowest maintenance cat I've ever seen. She's a fluffy marshmallow cat that loves cuddles and cheap cat food.

Question: Why is one of the best cats in the world up for adoption?
Answer: We have three cats - Momma-Cat, Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat. We adopted them as a package deal in Dubai when some asshole tried to drown some kittens outside our apartment; one morning we woke up to the sound of Momma-Cat screaming over the bucket her kittens were in. A quick fishing trip later we were the proud owners of two kittens and a momma cat. They all got on great until two years ago when we took the momma cat to get her teeth cleaned - from the moment she got home she has been in a fight with one of her kittens, Beast-Cat (now grown up into a 16 pound monster twice his momma's size). We have tried everything but with no luck and have come to the conclusion we need to find her a new home as the regular ass-kickings she's getting are taking their toll on her.

Question: Why is she up for adoption now and not a year ago?
Answer: We recently had a baby, and since then are no longer able to give the cats, who are separated in different parts of the house most of the time, the attention they need. Further - a couple of times they have gotten in fights near the baby and it's a risk we can't continue to take.

Question: Why isn't Beast-Cat up for adoption instead?
Answer: Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat are best buds. They are highly energetic and extremely destructive. They have a great time wrestling with each other and get on well. Beast-Cat doesn't do well on his own and any adoption with him would require a package deal with Douche-Cat. Douche-Cat is a douche and takes a lot of getting used to, we knew him as a kitten which makes it easier.

Question: Why not put her in a Cat Shelter?
Answer: She does not do well in cages and living in one would be a strain on her that we could not inflict on her, and would also make it hard to find someone to adopt her as they would not see her at her best.

Question: Have you tried X?
Answer: Yes

Question: Is she house trained?
Answer: Yes. She is also vaccinated.

Question: In the photo she looks like she's at the Vet - is she dying?
Answer: No - She was losing patches of hair due to over-cleaning herself out of anxiety due daily ass-kicking by Beast-Cat. She is recovered now as we have completely separated them into different parts of the house, a solution that is not possible in the long term as it basically involves locking her in the bedroom in the attic, which isn't fair on her and she deserves a home where she can get the love and attention she deserves.

Question: What is the return policy?
Answer: Our goal is to find her a new home where she will be happy, not just dump her. If the adoption does not work we will be happy to take her back and try to re-home her elsewhere.

So glad that Sugarbear made it through surgery and is going to be ok.

I'm in a funkee.  Just my depression kicking in.  Money issues.  Little Pie's problems.  Everything coming to a head.  But, as long as I continue taking my happee pills, I'll be ok I guess.

Hugs to all who needz dem.

Pills are good (I've been on them for over a decade), but they work better when you sleep well, eat well, and get a little exercise. Plus, the exercise helps you sleep better. Please do try to take good care of yourself all the time, but especially when things get stressful. Your family needs you in the best possible shape, and we want you to feel as good as possible! HUGS!

75% of the cats here are unhappy right now. Today is the first day of the window replacement and siding project at the Snuffybud household. Jack, Cisco and Desi (the 3 indoor only cats) are in cat jail as we don't want them bounding out an opening while a window is out. The are confused right now, they'll get grumpy as the day goes along. Snuffy however is loving this! All the others are locked up and he gets to supervise the construction!

Me four. I've been trying to save up to refill my prescription but the last time I had enough cash I got a flat tire and had to buy a new tire instead. Trying again to save and hanging in there until I can take the meds again.

Catmandu: Here's a link to your state's prescription assistance program. They should be able to help you get free or really low-cost meds. Have you asked your doc for samples to tide you over? Mental meds have some unpleasant withdrawal effects, so docs are usually pretty good about making sure you don't have to suffer and have a recurrence of the original problem. HUGS! GO TEAM PROZAC!!

Just caught up in the thread and see that others made these same suggestions and that you answered.

Some manufacturers offer big discounts directly: google the company name with "prescription assistance" and see what you find. Also, it may be that some of the other Wisconsin programs haven't discontinued your drug? Our county has a specific person and office that does all of this groundwork and knows all the ins-and-outs. Maybe yours does too? Your county health department would be the place to call and ask to get started, but you might have to make a few calls within it to find the person who knows where to send you. Good luck!

No time right now to salsa (not gonna find, make or take, as don't have already).  Esp FangQ to maynerdkitty for vid It's my bed! with Icom amateur radio rig spot at head of.  Amateur Radio Field Day starts at 2PM EDT today; we aren't making our club';s for 8th yr in row due to Harmony Fest.  Speaking furrther of that, looks like Hoo-mon Varmints got the hanging mics case as well --  those were truly desired for concluding HF show at brand new Talawanda HS this eve (school didn't buy 'em). They needed to be Sent Away For in first place so not instantly replace-able even if Plumbicon does get anything from insurance (which I purrsonally sing-cerely doubt, as we left door open)
Also good to hear of Activity of mewbies at BBBB's.
Last voties for Juno today; wl go see if they'll let me in to do so once I sign here.  See/read all y'all tomorrow as we don't expect to get home until way late.  Type now at ft of pg 4 so will have much salsa to do --  last Caturday will be very hard to find time to do as it was 1420-odd.  Must also Edit, as I have at last finnished (sic) transcribing the issue that took furr-ever.  Local hamrag's due into circ by Tue, state one needs out before July 1 when we need to leave for O Canada for men's intl barbershop contest..

Thanks for the links. I actually have checked them before and the best I can do is remain on the BadgerCare waitlist. I have been on the waitlist since 2009 and still have several thousand ahead of me. My doc doesn't have samples for me. Wellbutrin is generic now (generic doesn't help me, common occurance with wellbutrin) and she doesn't get enough samples of Aplenzin which is a new variation on wellbutrin and also works for me. The drug company that makes aplenzin seems very stingy. Not only do they not give out many samples but they don't have a PAP either.

Hi everyone,

I have a feral mama cat that showed up in my backyard with 4 kittens that look to be about 6-8 weeks old. If I can catch them, I can take them to my local shelter to be retrained for homes.

Any suggestions on capture methods?

weasel - Try and secure a safe place for her and her kittens first. A box up high away from predators. Give her some water and food. You can get a "have a heart" trap from local animal no kill shelters. If you don't/can't do that, call the no-kill shelter and tell them your predicament. Do you have a garage you can put them in until you get help?

I've been feeding them, and trying to build trust, but I can't get closer than about 10 feet so far. My concern with using a trap is that there are so many of them. They'll catch on after the first couple get trapped. I have no garage, and my own cat won't take well to bringing them inside.

So my predicament seems to be that I need to get them all in a really short time span, so they don't figure out what's happening. I honestly don't think I can get the mom. She's too wary and fast.

But I'd like to try to get the wee ones before the dogs or coyotes do, and before they grow up to fill my neighborhood with even more little kitties.

Ivan and Tola have never been bag kitties, but for some reason, this bag has been THE toy of the month. They like to sit on top of it, in it, hit their toys into it, hide in it and pounce on each other. I'm still amused at how much play we're getting out of a simple paper bag.

I'm so glad to see Sugarbear is doing well! I hope he has a speedy recovery and is running around like a crazy cat soon!

Target Builder, I hope you can find Momma-Cat a good home. She looks so pretty and sweet!

Predle, I remember a few years back when there were fires on the border of AZ/NM. Albuquerque was just cloaked in smoke for a few days. I remember not being able to sleep because of it. A half broken swamp cooler that couldn't move the air, the hot 90 degree air just sitting there with the smoke. And the house was so poorly built that there were no cross breezes, so I couldn't even open windows and the fan did nothing. Ugh, I remember that being miserable. Not to mention the fires up north around Los Alamos that destroyed so much. I hope they're able to get it under control. The damage to the wildlife too - I remember reading an article about wild animals they tranquilized so they could treat the burns on their paws before setting them free.

weasil  I see your point. I agree on getting the kittens since the momma is fast. Don't expose your cat to the feral cats as they can infect your cat. Is there a rescue agency near you?  Your idea of gaining trust from the momma cat is good, and hopefully you can get to the point to capture her or have someone else do it for you.  I am so glad you care, thank you, you deserve a halo. Wish I could help you, since I seem to be trying to catch a feral cat, too, and understand the frustrations.

Bronson has already let her know he doesn't appreciate her wet kisses. But they are co-existing, which is good.

weasil: Hi everyone,

I have a feral mama cat that showed up in my backyard with 4 kittens that look to be about 6-8 weeks old. If I can catch them, I can take them to my local shelter to be retrained for homes.

Any suggestions on capture methods?

I went through this with a feral momma cat at my office some time ago.  Borrow a large Have-A-Heart trap from the local shelter.  The best bait is whatever they like.  Some seem to love KFC original chicken or Fancy Feast Liver & Chicken.  But I finally caught momma cat with a canned mackerel cat food.  It took me 2 1/2 years to catch her because she actually broke my trap escaping from it and wouldn't go back in for a very long time.  In that time I caught 19 babies and two of her paramours. Good Luck!  The most important thing is to keep trying!

The most important thing to do is set the trap regularly.  I also covered the trap with a vinyl tablecloth & just left the end open so it was more like a cave.  I also put a rock on top of the tablecloth to hold it down.  I was pretty shocked when I got to work one morning and one of momma cats boyfriends was in the trap, but the table cloth wasn't on top.  It was shredded into 2" squares and was inside the trap with him!  He was pretty scary and the only black cat I saw, but a good portion of the babies over that time were black or black with a little white on them.

predle: I took this from my front yard at 7:45 tonight.

That's scary looking. I hope they can get it under control soon.
When we lived in Idaho there were a lot of forest fires and the air was thick and made it difficult to breathe. They told people with asthma and breathing difficulties to stay indoors with the AC on.

Target Builder: Cat For Adoption - Please Help - DC/Northern VA/MD- Can Travel

Douche-Cat is a douche a ...

I'm not having a good Caturday because Pica, age 5, neutered male, black-and-white, rescue kitty five years ago, didn't come home last night and that's not like him. He's always waiting when I return from work because he's generally been outdoors for at least 12 hours and is therefore hungry (and wants some attention).

I've always thought he was pretty smart and able to avoid danger, but it's times like this (he's only done this twice before) that I worry he's run into something he couldn't handle.

My feral cat story. My parents had a huge black cat in their yard that when the door was open would come into the kitchen for food, he eventually would be very friendly. One summer there was a kitten following him with a cyst on its' head. When I came home from school, she asked my to catch it so we could turn it over to the vet for treatment. About five minutes after that, I saw the kitten while I was up high on the deck and dove down and grabbed it. So here I was walking into the house with a very scared and panicked cat with all claws operating every chance and screaming loudly. As I started down the hallway dripping blood to get a blanket to wrap it in my mother looks at me very crossly and says "I didn't mean now!" The vet took care of the huge cyst and said that they would bring it to the humane society. I was really bandaged up.

Give him at least two days maybe even three, I have two cats that have done similar only to wait a day or two and they show up. It hurts, but usually it works out for the good.

I would like to take this moment to thank a particular mystery Farker for making Sugarbear's operation possible by donating a fairly substantial amount to his veterinary ta ...

Greetings all--

Thanks for help cheering me up a little.

I'm still depressed about having to let go of Anya, my "pretty little princess" early this month.

Here she is in better days, Halloween a few years ago:

img.fark.net

She developed tumors in her mouth that were obviously bothering her. Eventually she couldn't eat and  she became seriously underweight.  I put it off longer than I probably should have because Anya was still very affectionate and was snuggling with me almost every night. I'd wake with dried gross stuff she drooled while we were sleeping.

I don't know if she could have been treated if I got her in early on. The vet said probably not, but I suspect that was just to make me feel better (he knew how little I could pay, and was nice enough to give me a good discount on Anya's exam and putting her down.)  I have been struggling to even pay my mortgage on a crappy teacher's salary-- a series of large vet bills were sadly out of the question.

I cried like a little girl at the vet's.  Ever see a 43 year old fat guy holding a dead cat and crying?  I bet it wasn't a pretty sight.

Also depressed since I'm unemployed (technically-- I'll very likely have another teaching job soon-- doubtful if it will be one I like, but whatever.)  Even worse, I'm starting to think something is screwed up with my brain chemistry.  I see a doctor Tuesday (thank the goddess for the free tribal health clinic!)

Anyway, here are some pics I found in my wanderings of the intertubes.  Hope they haven't been done to death here:

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: While everyone else romps around the bathroom chasing mom and each other, the twins take a well needed nap.  Can't prove they were twins, but they were born about 3 minutes apart, and aside from the sex and white stripe, they're almost identical.  Not to mention that they always sleep touching each other.

Riche: Greetings all--

Thanks for help cheering me up a little.

I'm still depressed about having to let go of Anya, my "pretty little princess" early this month.

Here she is in better days, Halloween a few years ago:

Oral cancer is quite common in cats. Sometimes due to chemicals in the environment..like second hand smoke and sometimes even the lawn treatments. I suspect that just acts as a trigger for a gene expression..That said, my folks went thru this with two kittehs. They were both quite elderly at the time. And no, not alot you can do. There is surgery, but often they take large portions of the jaw. (eep!) I don't think I could do that to my cat. You were a good parent, and did what you could at the time. And besides, when you are employed again, maybe you will be called to a new animal in need.

What nation are you from? Curious cat wants to know...that and last time my son and I went to a Pow-wow we got asked tons of times "who we belonged to.." I have olive skin, dark brown eyes and dark brown hair..

Timid Goddess how cool is this! Where we vacation in Michigan is where the Odawa and the Ojibwa "hung out". And...waaay back in my Great Grand Mother's day, she was great friends with the Native Americans in her area. She was quite an herbalist, and I am absolutely convinced that she and her Indian friends swapped remedies. I have several baskets that I know were made for her. Probably as trade items for things grown on the farm that they didn't have. I'm thinking eggs, as I have heard alot about the hens, and about her roosting Turkeys! She is actually the basis of my Civil War character..

Timid Goddess: Pottawotamie

Citizen Potawatomi Nation, actually.  My wife (Timid Goddess) has no indian blood (calls herself a "Swedish Meatball.")  I'm brown hair/eyes, fairly light skinned.

My two year old daughter is one among an increasing number of blond-hair, blue-eyed indians.

Thanks for the words of support.

Sickapie: Sorry about Anya.  Hugs for you.  As far as the depression goes, if you read upthread, you're in the right place this Caturday.  %-)

Yeah, I noticed-- that's why I posted.  :-)  Also, thanks.

Even though I'm spending most of my time in a darkened room trying not to wish I was dead, I'm pretty optimistic-- at least on an intellectual level.  I've responded pretty well to "happee pills" in the past, and I'm lucky enough to get them free at the clinic.

=================

I sure wish every American (especially my wife) could get the health care my daughter and I are entitled to by accident of birth -- anything considered "medically necessary" is free, and they're somewhat liberal with what "medically necessary" means. I usually have to wait a few weeks to get in to see a doctor, but if I need to I can always go to the multi-tribe urgent care clinic (though it's a two hour drive-- for some crazy reason they located it WAAAY out in the middle of nowhere.)  "Life or limb" emergencies I can take to the ER, of course-- just a lot of paperwork then.

The docs all work on salary, so they don't focus on rushing as many people through as possible-- they take their time and listen to the patient. They're also not tempted to do unnecessary treatments to get extra money.

It's all horribly socialist, and no doubt makes the babby Jesus cry-- but it sure works for me.  Hell, I'd still go to them even if I had insurance (which they gladly take if you have any.)

Sorry for the rambling.  Here's a pic of Timid Goddess and Maggie:

Very glad to be able to do that... we look out for family here, and I am happy to see you posting.. and you can join us on Purrsday again..  got a good nap (with cats)... not happy with early Saturdays, but this situation was something that I needed to be there for.. good for the company, got the roof fixed and the leaks stopped.. the new AC units have to go where the bad area of roof was.. built a 22' x 8' deck to go on that spot, for the units to sit on.. laid down rubber strips on the new area to protect the roof.. chemicals in the wood corrode the metal of the roof.. so that won't happen again.. got a crane coming Monday to set the deck on the roof, as well as the new AC units.. we should have cool offices by mid week.... ya gotta do what ya gotta do...  and won't have trouble sleeping tonight !   Do not set the alarm Saturday night, so extra zzz,s in the morning.... things like this keep life interesting....

We were gone for quite a while, we didn't go very far.

She looks so happy.

I fell asleep on the sofa last night. Cassie snuggles up against me and purred all night. I woke at first light, King George was on the porch rail crowing, but when I looked at the window I saw Fiona STANDING on the back of the sofa whining at the window. She never wants to go out but this morning she ran out when I opened the door. Then I remembered seeing the skunk going across the yard a few days ago. Whatever she saw was gone but she spent time at the base of one of the oaks. She peed twice at the base of the tree and then did a slow circle around the house sniffing for something. Thank goodness she did not find the skunk. I don't think it was a squirrel as she is not that interested in them. Now that she is a house dog she seems more interested in guarding her place. She even barked at the neighbor returning my incubator and brooder. It was not a "stay away" bark but more like a "come, look" bark. I need to encourage that.

OlderGuy: tigerose: Oh my, I haz a sad. I just heard that a wing walker was killed in Dayton, after the plane crashed. My son and I have seen her work. It was amazing, Rest in Peace, Jane Wicker. You are soaring with the angels now.

Judging from the reports, it was very quick... RIP..

One of my good friends from college msgd saying that her family was in the section right in front where it happened. It was very quick but she says her son is pretty shaken up :(

Sickapie: akimbotoo: Sickapie: So, regarding my post yesterday about the spice cake I made....

Mr. Pie had some and declared that it was dry.  Yes, he did eat the whole piece.  But he didn't stop there.  He went one further and told me to ask my sister in law (my brother's wife - who is a fabulous baker) how she bakes her cakes and maybe she could give me some pointers.

O.o

//told him to go to her house for cake in the future

///took him 20 minutes to dig cake out his nostrils

////hard to type while laughing

You are so wonderful!  That is hilarious, but you could also tell him that he could just have a glass of milk with the cake.  Or......you could make this cake for him and see what he thinks....Link

OMG! That's awesome.

I made it a couple of years ago to take to a family get-together.  Hubby doesn't like cocoanut, but loved this cake.  One of my brother-in-laws stood over the nearly empty dish "cleaning" up the edges with a spoon! Yeah, he got scolded by his wife for that one!

Hey people...
Riktor's vet visit went well; he behaved himself beautifully (as usual). His weight is in the 'low normal' range for him, but just to be safe the Sainted Vet took some blood. They're going to check for several things, including thyroid function.
I want to thank all you guys for making me aware that hyperthyroid can be 'silent' and still cause kitty a LOT of discomfort...so I asked that this test be included.

Baby Casper has taken over the group home- everybody just lurves her to pieces. When I got to work last night, she came running up to me and greeted me as though she knew that I'd provided a lot of stuff for her.
She's a pants-climber, but seems to be very careful about 'fabric, not skin'...the cloth on my pants was not thick, yet I didn't get clawed. It's a bit early, but I think she shows promise...and doesn't seem to mind hullaballoo...the place can get pretty noisy at times.

Wimsey's eyes look like that sometimes, only a bit lighter...sort of aquamarine. Usually they're a sort of pale grey-green (aka 'celadon').
Cat's eyes...like living jewels.

Don't forget...today (Saturday) is the last day to VOTE FOR JUNO!

Hope she wins...

Snuffybud: The window work is done for the day. Desi (I'm assuming it was him, I don't think the other 2 would have done it) tried to break out of cat jail, he got caught. The door has pet-proof screening, he just pulled the screen and spline loose from the door!

That's what ALL the windows in my house look like...'courtesy' of Riktor.
That boy is a determined little shiat serious when he decides he wants OUT...

Sickapie: John Buck 41: sharbear: PS..(I have a dumb question...) Why are my posts green? ha ha ha ha. I'm so embarrassed.

Did you favorite yourself? (And no, that isn't a euphemism for something...though I suppose it could be)

I was going to suggest the same thing.  I have all my faves greened (including JB41)  :)

There's a green arrow option on Fark: it lets you know when your name is mentioned, even when your older post is responded to, your username shows up in green.

/ too many comments posted that I would like to respond to, but I'm a little out of it right now - the white one is not having a good day - and I've been preoccupied with hovering over him (much to his displeasure, i take that as a good sign) , so i'll just post pics for now....

exvaxman: My feral cat story.

Strangely enough, my mom did exactly the same thing once. We noticed a little orange out on his own, and said it would probably be good to catch him before he got too big. Came home the next day to find my mom dripping blood all over. She just said, "He's behind the TV."

valnt9: sharbear: olderguy - I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the YEAR of TF.  I was totally in tears. I saw that you didn't get your day off, and was sad.  I hope by now you are on the couch with furkids around you and the remote control!  You made my day, my year, my friend. I will give as is given to me because after almost losing my life, I know what's important in life.  If we could vote for the Caturday Person of the Year, I'd vote for you! Thank you, dear friend.    =^.^=

I will second the motion.
