So an old southern woman used a racist term 27 years ago when describing the person who held a gun to her head during a robbery?

Spanky McStupid: Seriously, Fark?  You seriously believe none of us in the south ever said that word?

On the contrary, we believe that y'all rarely utter a sentence without including it.

red5ish: My personal experience has been that the people who use that word in the most derogatory and vicious manner are black people talking about or yelling at other black people.

And racism isn't limited to old white people by any stretch of the imagination, and it certainly isn't limited to the United States.

White people aren't bad! EVERYBODY does it!

/Is that the defense you're going to run with? Lol

As for her "I'm from a different generation" excuse, baloney. She's not 90, and she hasn't been locked away in a sanitarium for the past 40 years. She's a hugely successful, well-travelled professional. Her failings are her own doing.

Stupid sensationalist trial.  Racism isn't a crime.  Black people, in my life, have always been more racist than white people.  It's just OK for them to be.  Way to go, America.

Jesus this is getting entirely out of proportion. She's an old fat woman who got famous for having a cooking show. She's not running for office or heading a major university. Who gives a fark what offensive words are in her vocabulary?

If we're going to ride people out on a rail for the dumb shiat they do, I think a little bit of casual bigotry is pretty farking far down the list.

That word used to really make me mad when I was young, fresh outta small town white high school. In the last 16 years, I've lived in different cities, met tons of good and bad people, and the word doesn't really bug me anymore.

/shrugs

She was asked under oath if she'd ever used the word N--ger.  Come on, who hasn't used that word in a sentence at least once?  Jesus.
Being this repressed isn't good for society.

Seriously, how does this woman cook any better than some of our grandmothers? It might be tasty, but what she does isn't exactly the art of a real chef. I watched her show once (was a captive audience), and nothing she did was unique or intriguing. She's a great cook, and I'd gladly eat one of her meals after a long day, but a celebrity 'chef?'

Mock26: MNguy: Mock26: 1986, which TMZ notes is the year Paula admitted to using the word after "a black man burst into the bank that I was working at and put a gun to my head."

Sorry, but that is a justifiable excuse for the use of the n-word.

I guess, if you're looking for an excuse to use a word.

Wow do you have to be looking for an excuse to use the word?  Sometimes words come out when you are angry.

If the word isn't already part of your vocabulary, it can't just "come out" under any circumstances, now can it? It has to be "in there" in the first place.

Total witch hunt by liberal women who can't find success in the kitchen. I'm sure they'll biatch about how they have careers and don't have time to cook. Height of irony.

Well, since it doesn't bother you, then lets just close the case. Look, you're the one who is overreacting. No one has firebombed her house or phoned in death threats. Shes a product that the network sells to us. The media is informing her customers that she may not appreciate their patronage as much as we previously believed because she's of the mind that some of us would look good as slaves. Meh, that's her opinion, so its cool. But I'd rather spend my time and money with a person who doesn't view me as inferior. That's just me. Its not a big deal. She doesn't fark with me, so I don't fark with her.  Nobody is losing sleep.

Nope. As an older white person from the south (I actually lived in Albany, Georgia at the same time she was there, for a short while) I know the rules, and she is full of it. Respectable white folks in the south never say n*gg*r. Only poor white trash do that. You can hate blacks with a purple passion, but if you have any class at all, you never say the word. Just the same as you would never say any other swear word. And revealing that you did in public, under oath? Please. GTFO.

So I'm sorry Paula, regardless of how rich and famous you will ever become, you are simply NOKD. (not our kind, dear)

You can't be black and incensed if you accept the word in everyday speech referring to one another. It's then no longer vulgar.

So what if it is part of your vocabulary?  It is possible to know the word and not apply it to all black people and only apply it to select individuals.

Lorelle: I'm no fan of hers, but she's being honest.

Why do people use this phrase as if it somehow absolves the person in question of what they have done or said that was wrong?
I'm in the "don't give a sh*t" category about whether she was "honest" or not, the issue is what she said. If I run around screaming that I hate Jews or Muslims or whatever dumb sh*t I could spew from my piehole, does the fact that I'm being "honest" about how I feel negate the fact that I'm an asshole?

sadly we have hit a point where many thinking "Cooking" is putting a freezer meal in a preheated oven and seasoning is a few drops of tabasco sause

Who cares.  She's a farking cook on TV.  Maybe if she was an elected representative or someone who actually mattered it would be worth getting pissed off about.  Does the random douche down the street saying n*gger piss people off as well?  If so you need to calm the fark down.

Anyway, old people do get a bit of a pass.  My grandparents were racist, but they would use the word even in non-racist ways; it was just a word for them.  For example, the following:

img.fark.net

...was referred to as a 'n*gger tit'.  If you use the n-word to describe a delicious chocolatey morsel, I would hardly consider that racist.  If anything that's pro black titties.

2013-06-20 10:55:31 PM
I don't know any 60-years olds who use the N-word; I have a southern grandmother (deceased) who used it all the time when I would visit her as a kid... didn't want me playing with 'those' kids. But she was born in the 19th Century, so it must be OK.

Paula Deen's creepy laugh reminded me of something, but I didn't remember what until a few moments ago. She reminds me of two things from my youth: One of the creatures from the game Splatterhouse 3 and the sand worms from Dune. Now I'm feeling nostalgic for those all-nighters of watching sci-fi and horror films on VHS and playing Sega Genesis games while nodding on codeine and listening to Skinny Puppy through headphones.

I think it's from the same school of thought that makes people think all opinions are worthy and should be respected.
