(ABC)   Melissa Etheridge doesn't think Angelina Jolie is brave because "It's my belief that cancer comes from inside you." Unlike most scientists, who think cancer comes from demons hiding under your bed   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 34

So...when did we go to Med school Doctor Etheridge?  And when did we get to consult with the patient and see her medical records?

Oh....you didn't?

Okay then.  Please STFU.

Lorelle: If you have your boobs removed because you fear getting cancer in them, you're fearful.

French kissing your brother on the red carpet at the Oscars is brave (and sick).

Fearful?  How about realistic.  She had a close to 90% chance of developing very aggressive breast cancer.  Something like a 50% mortality rate even if caught early.

With the mastectomy her odds of being dead in 10 years from cancer went from something like flipping a coin and if it comes up tails you die to something like rolling a 1 on a D20.

Given that math, you may call her fearful, but I'd call the other choice stupid.

I dunno, a lot of people (like me) would bury their head in the sand and ignore the issue until they were dead. She faced it and dealt with it, I think that was pretty brave.

I marvel at healthy people going on about the racket that cancer care is. If you don't have cancer, STFU. If you do have cancer, you're going to die. I had stage 3 cancer. I'm alive because of those expensive ass chemicals and poisonous radiation. The shills were the people trying to get me to believe that bullshiat like magnets and eating raw food would save me.

This is why you don't consult a pop musician on medical matters. Certainly she is entitled to an opinion, but she is speaking about something outside her field of expertise, about a complex matter where her opinion has no value.

FarkinHostile: Actually, Breast Cancer is caused by an imbalance of bodily humors, perhaps caused by a toad or a small dwarf living in her stomach.

The Caladrius Bird is placed beside a patient. If the bird looks at a patient's face, she should have her breasts removed; but if it looks at her feet, she should not.

The women on my mom's side of the family have BRAC running through them like kudzu in the South. We've had three double mastectomies in the last 10 years, not to mention my mom dying at 29 from breast cancer. Miss Etheridge can go fark herself.

TheOmni: There's been a lot of terrible comments about Angelina Jolie's decision, but those have been mostly in the misogynist 'women's bodies are public property' sort of vein. I haven't really seen that much of this sort of 'I don't understand science' stuff though. There has been a lot of failure to understand exactly how high risk she was and underplaying that, but I'm not sure if that's just poor reading comprehension or poor math skills.

But Etheridge's  beliefs about cancer are certainly as valid as any oncologist's or medical researcher's, right?

Mutilation is prevention.

Did you mean to say Melissa Etheridge? If not, when it comes your time, be sure to let your tumor grow and metastasize rather than mutilate yourself.

People have smoked tobacco in Africa for hundreds of years - BUT lung cancer was never a problem (hardly even reported) UNTIL the British colonized and industrialized Africa. Occurences of lung cancer came immediately after DEISEL FUEL EXHAUST was introduced into their environment. In fact, the reason WHY there aren't many full-service gas stations left is because the attendants started being commonly diagnosed with lung cancer FROM the DEISEL FUEL EXHAUST.

People smoked in Africa for thousands of years but never got lung cancer until the British industrialized them (full-service gas stations closed because ALL the attendants got lung cancer FROM breathing diesel exhaust)... SMALL PARTICLES CAUSE CANCER (mold, radiation) - smoke is NOT small enough...

I've spent hours researching this topic and have never found a single peer-reviewed report of a REAL study proving that smoking tobacco causes cancer. This experiment is as simple as putting rats in 2 separate cages, and blowing smoke into one of them - IF cigarette smoke DOES cause cancer = the rats in the smoke-filled chamber will develop cancerous tumors, while the rats in the control cage would NOT. So after all the money THEY spend telling us that smoking causes cancer - WHY NOT spend $100 on some rats and a pack of smokes to PROVE it? Until THEY do, this is just a load of propaganda to defer the responsibility and cost of the INDUSTRIAL SMOKESTACKS that THEY scrape for sodium fluoride to add to our public water supply (which does indeed cause osteoporosis and bone cancer in boys).

Got that? Tobacco good, fluoride bad. It's unfortunate how many people actually believe this sort of crap. Or that there is a cure for cancer, but "big pharma" won't let it be released. Then they make important decisions based on their horoscope.

M.E. has a point.  If you have a high risk of getting a cancer that is going to kill you someday and you can nip it in the bud, how are you heroic for doing so?  I mean, if I choose to save my own life, how am I a hero?  To whom?  Plenty of people battle far worse than what Jolie went through but their names are getting put up in lights about what a hero they are. One of the basic human instincts is survival.

What you say is completely irrelevant. She said that Jolie was not brave. You are pretending the issue is that she said Jolie is not a hero.

You could ignore the problem and hope for the best or you can get proactive and go through some terrible experiences to deal with it. The latter is brave.

I find that from helping to rebuild NOLA to adopting children who would otherwise be dead, Jolie can do no right for some people.

Oral sex can transmit the HPV virus, which does, indeed, cause cancer.  That's why you should get vaccinated against it.

Chemo is horrible, awful, miserable stuff. Cancer is worse.

Watching someone you love struggle with cancer and with chemo is so horrible that I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. And I'm fairly vindictive.

Angelina Jolie made a painful decision that may spare herself and the people she loves the agony of cancer and cancer treatments. I personally call that brave and wish her the best.
