Historians will have to scour our hard drives and newspaper clippings to scrape together enough information to piece together our collective fetishes.  They will misinterpret our kinks through their jaded filters, grossly exaggerating our noble lusts into comical perversions that were impossible to achieve.  And we will be all the poorer because they didn't focus on inventing time travel so they could tell us about their concocted ways we could be employing to sate our libidos.

Don't worry the NSA has backups.

LeaseWeb said it had been maintaining the servers at its own expense since Megaupload was shuttered in January 2012. After the servers sat inactive for a year, and with no requests to access them, it said it had informed Megaupload that it would delete them.

Seems pretty reasonable if this is accurate. Running hundreds of servers for a year costs a significantly non-zero amount of money. Can't expect them to foot your bill forever.

For some reason this makes me think of Storage Wars.

Hard drives are so cheap these days, and its so easy to have an external USB hard drive as a backup, plus software that makes backups automatically.

The US is prosecuting Dotcom.  The servers belong to a Dutch firm.  LeaseWeb claims nobody asked it to preserve the data.  Doltcom's attorney and the EFF dispute that claim.

Amazon charges $0.095 per GB per month for the first TB of data stored on S3, their servers are damn near bulletproof, and you can easily configure it to stream HD-quality video files to a web page or a smartphone for only a little bit extra using Cloudfront. Unless you are doing something particularly nefarious, I don't know why you'd even consider anyone besides Amazon when you need to store a huge amount of data in the cloud for cheap.

They have 630 servers. I don't see any concrete numbers on storage but let's say 500 GB per server or a round 300 TB. It's tiered but at $0.070/GB that would cost $21,000 per month. Since they have zero money, $21k/month is a little out of their league. Amazon's prices sound cheap but unless you have almost nothing to store the numbers get large quick.

From Amazon:
First 1 TB / month $0.095 per GB
Next 49 TB / month $0.080 per GB
Next 450 TB / month $0.070 per GB

Who does that anymore?  Especially if they are a major hosting company?  At most it was taking up a bunch of disk space - not actual server cycles.

Oh, god...

Okay, so I work for an agency of the US government. One that is in the new relatively frequently, but not too often, probably at least makes a headline a few times a year. This past week we've had to deal with endless crap from up-on-high that basically boils down to "how will big data??!!!1"

When you try to ask questions like, "if we're going to implement a massive system of servers and software to analyze vast quantities of data, what do we actually want to do with it? What is the use case? What problem are we actually trying to solve that we cannot solve with existing mid-level business intelligence software?!"...

The answers we have received have all been along the lines of "Yes, your concerns, whatever, but will we be able to see the big data results on an iPad?" and "What big data software should we use?"

I reached my personal limit the other day when I saw something called "prolapse kissing".  It's exactly as horrible as it sounds.

The preferred term for a prolapsed anus is "tulip." While there is porn specifically targeting prolapsed women (both vaginal and anal), you also tend to see tulips in creampie eating videos.

If you're scratching your heads on this, here's the typical setup: 1 guy and 2 girls. The girls are in a 69 position where one is lying flat on her back and the other is on all fours. The guy is behind the girl who is on all fours, penetrating her ass and building up for the anal creampie. He cums inside that girl, pulls out, and moves out of the way. The girl underneath positions herself so that any cum which runs out too quickly will be caught in her mouth (or at least on her face). Then the girl with the creampie begins pushing out. Sometimes she pushes out until she tulips, at which point part of her rectum is actually poking out through her sphincter (and it kind of looks like a flower, which is where the term tulip comes from -- are you following me?). So then, the girl who's underneath raises her head (sometimes with the help of the guy) and begins licking up any cum around the anal area and she starts penetrating the tulip with her tongue. Is everybody still with me on this? The whole point of this exercise is that she's trying to lick out the remnants of the creampie (and hopefully swallow it, since that's why they're performing this act in the first place). All the way up to this point, this can be a very hot scene if the participants are all doing things correctly. Where it gets hard to watch -- even for porn connoisseurs -- is when the girl who's tuliped is also gassed up (which can happen after a great deal of intense anal intercourse), and she starts farting in the face of the other girl, who is trying to do her best to dig out the cum with her tongue and eventually swallow it. Because the scene relies on the continuity of a single long take (to maintain the assurance that he really did cum inside her ass and that the other girl is indeed going after that creampie and eating it), they don't cut out the gassy part, and if the participants are pros, they'll just stick with the action until the scene is complete. A really gassy tulip scene can turn the stomach a bit (while the viewer intently watches it, thinking to himself "Holy crap!").

I hope that explains it adequately.

Fark Me To Tears: haydenarrrrgh: Fark Me To Tears: We've come a long way from department store catalog underwear models to A2M, felching, snowballing, squirting, and GGG... (Thank God for the Internet)

Where it gets hard to watch -- even for porn connoisseurs -- is when the girl who's tuliped is also gassed up (which can happen after a great deal of intense anal intercourse), and s ...

What is a classy fella like you doing in a place like this?

Oh please. This isn't any worse than that Danish animal porn that you were watching on the boss's computer at work the other day. And all I did was describe it, in a response to the post which addressed kissing prolapses. You actually WATCHED that guy screwing the cow... and the chicken...

"What is it Augie-ben-doggie, is it as if suddenly millions of people screamed out in anguish and were suddenly silenced?"

"No, just a headache."

BarkingUnicorn: Kanabiis: Wait the government destroyed the evidence they planned on using to procecute a German citizen? Could it be that what they found was actually going to prove his case? Nah, that's just crazy talk, I'm sure it was just an accident, some intern made a mistake, rest assured they will take action to insure it doesn't happen again.

The US is prosecuting Dotcom.  The servers belong to a Dutch firm.  LeaseWeb claims nobody asked it to preserve the data.  Doltcom's attorney and the EFF dispute that claim.

When a third party happens to hold data for a party to a lawsuit, and that data is potentially responsive to discovery (which no article seems to have addressed yet--this was the stuff not copied and provided to authorities, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily unresponsive to discovery), if it's possible to prosecute third party data holders for evidence spoilation, this may be the biggest evidence spoilation claim ever.

Of course the server farm needs to be paid, but if no one is stepping up to do so I'd still have gotten a court order allowing the deletion before going ahead with it.  Maybe the court would have ordered a party to pay.
