Historians will have to scour our hard drives and newspaper clippings to scrape together enough information to piece together our collective fetishes.  They will misinterpret our kinks through their jaded filters, grossly exaggerating our noble lusts into comical perversions that were impossible to achieve.  And we will be all the poorer because they didn't focus on inventing time travel so they could tell us about their concocted ways we could be employing to sate our libidos.

Don't worry the NSA has backups.

LeaseWeb said it had been maintaining the servers at its own expense since Megaupload was shuttered in January 2012. After the servers sat inactive for a year, and with no requests to access them, it said it had informed Megaupload that it would delete them.

Seems pretty reasonable if this is accurate. Running hundreds of servers for a year costs a significantly non-zero amount of money. Can't expect them to foot your bill forever.

For some reason this makes me think of Storage Wars.

I'm sure that many of the millions of users who were storing very important work on those servers will soon begin suing the beyeezus out of everyone involved.

It's impossible to fathom how much important legal, medical, and scholarly work has been lost....

FabulousFreep: Yay for "cloud" storage of all your "important" data.

There have been so many cases where online storage has suddenly gone away for one reason or another. Anyone who still relies on a cloud storage for their only copy of anything even vaguely important is an idiot. Hard drives are so cheap these days, and its so easy to have an external USB hard drive as a backup, plus software that makes backups automatically.

Anyone who trusted a single cloud provider with the only copy of an important legal, medical or scholarly document deserves to never work again.

Wait the government destroyed the evidence they planned on using to procecute a German citizen? Could it be that what they found was actually going to prove his case? Nah, that's just crazy talk, I'm sure it was just an accident, some intern made a mistake, rest assured they will take action to insure it doesn't happen again.

Yeah back pre internet pron if you didnt have a playboy handy hair band videos that had the hot girl the lead singer was banging dancing around for 3&1/2 minutes was all you had. You needed to finish before they went back from the dancing hot chick to the band.

Of course I was a pro it was no problem to finish. Hell I could finish twice and take a nap in 3&1/2 minutes.

The US is prosecuting Dotcom.  The servers belong to a Dutch firm.  LeaseWeb claims nobody asked it to preserve the data.  Doltcom's attorney and the EFF dispute that claim.

Amazon charges $0.095 per GB per month for the first TB of data stored on S3, their servers are damn near bulletproof, and you can easily configure it to stream HD-quality video files to a web page or a smartphone for only a little bit extra using Cloudfront. Unless you are doing something particularly nefarious, I don't know why you'd even consider anyone besides Amazon when you need to store a huge amount of data in the cloud for cheap.

That's still 570$ a year for a paltry 500GB. Just buy a few hard drives.

Personally, in a fan of Crashplan when it comes to backup. Unlimited online backup and local backup at the same time? Yes pls.

Anything to stay away from Windows backup and its random tendency to bloat archives by storing a two copies of everything randomly.

Exactly what I was thinking.  If it can happen like this then any major cloud storage could follow.  The big players are also vulnerable since they cannot be sure that illegal material is not stored on their systems.

I like how they referred to his real name of Kim Shmitz as though THAT was his wacky alias.

"The Ultimate Warrior, or as he is known to freak shows and degenerates 'Jim' stopped by a school today to babble crazily about health care."

Also, aside from rare porn/bootlegs/collections, 99% of what was on Mega is still available.
