(Entertainment.ie)   Since the last week has been dominated by the possible existence of missing Doctor Who episodes, we've forgotten to speculate over who the next Doctor will be. However, the BBC will resolve that issue for good in August or September   (entertainment.ie) divider line 48

Almost every male actor in The Hour was mentioned in that article except for the best, most obvious choice: Peter Capaldi.

He's apparently a regeneration between 8 and 9, who has been disowned by the rest of the Doctors, probably because of what he was forced to do to end the Time War. Basically a way to add a secret regeneration while still keeping Smith the 11th Doctor so things don't get all screwy when we talk about them.

Doctor Who Cares? Frankly it's all been downhill since Tom Baker, the recent reliance on Daleks and Cybermen bespeaks a sad failure of imagination, and the new high tech effects are both unimpressive and lacking the charm of the chintzy old production values. Plus, as an American, I find the ten minutes of introspection and angst which follows each episode uncomfortable and inappropriate in a space opera. Let the Doctor die, I say.

jlawn001: So, is it not John Hurt?

He's a past incarnation since Matt Smith's version knew about him, so no, he won't be the next Doctor he's just there for the 50th's special which I feel will be about the Time War because my money is that John Hurt fits between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston and was involved in the Time War that he ended by kill all the Time Lords and Dalek, which is why Matt Smith's Doctor said he doesn't deserve being called Doctor

Idris Elba would be good.  But if I was the Beeb, I'd take this opportunity to punk the world.  Make a fake announcement.

Or Wil Wheaton.  Or Carson Daly.  Or Seth Rogen.

I'm thinking Parker Posey. She'd be a crazy doctor. You'd need a Rory like companion to reel her in from her excesses. Someone like Martin Freeman to balance the two out.

The regeneration is supposed to happen either at the 50th Anniversary episode or Christmas (I forget which).

The next season isn't filming until 2014. It could be done.

The show is to begin filming it's Christmas Special in August or early September with the replacement due to be announced prior to this.

Doctor Who will return for it's 50th Anniversary special on November 23rd. Until then we shall have to keep on guessing as to who the new Doctor will be.

Isn't Nov 23rd after August/September?

Give River a bit of a shock, what?

Isn't River's storyline pretty much done?  I thought the events in The Name of the Doctor occur after he took her to the singing towers.  The Doctor hates goodbyes and barely talked about River to Clara, as if it was too painful a memory to bring up.  Otherwise, River's "Goodbye Sweetie" will lose its emotional impact.

This. The 50th Anniversary episode has already filmed, so that leaves the Christmas one. Like you said, it could be done, but things would have to be zipped up really tight so nothing leaks.

jlawn001: So, is it not John Hurt?

No, the John Hurt thing seemed to be going on a different tangent, not like they were revealing the new Doctor, but something else. For one thing, it wasn't until a week or two later that Matt Smith announced that he was leaving the show. Two; how would Smith be able to talk to himself from the future? Also, something about the way they talked made me think that the whole John Hurt thing is going to turn out to be some kind of time-loop Doctor who maybe only exists inside that bubble inside the DOctor's timeline, and can't eave it. Remember, they hinted at some kind of secret, and a mistake he'd made, or something like that.

I really think the John Hurt is going to be more of a parallel storyline.

... And Matt Smith isn't "continuing as The Doctor," he's packing his little blockheaded bags and running off set as quickly as his gangly legs will carry him. Gr. I don't even know why they bothered to bring on goggle-eyed boobies girl for six episodes - that whole second half of the season was just temporizing garbage. Even Tennant did better in his last bunch of episodes, including his crybaby "I donnnn Waahnna Goooooo!" Pitooie.

Yes: I'm bitter. This last season set my feelings for the series way back.

But when you look back to the introduction of "goggle-eyed boobies girl"(I love that girl, and she would have made a great companion, perfect to follow Amy Pond, actually), they set her up to be something other than an actual companion. When he first saw her on the Dalek planet, I thought she was being groomed to be the next companion, even though the Ponds had not said that they were leaving yet. Then she died. Same with the second time around, she plays a major role then dies.

I knew by then that there was going to be something different about her storyline and that she wouldn't be a real companion. Which sucked because not only is she a hottie, but she's a great arch for him.

I still think" goggle-eyed boobie girl" is the funniest thing I've read all week. :-)

So, when River told the Doctor that she met him when he was much older, any chance she was talking about the Hurt character? I know everyone is wed to the idea that  Hurt is a past incarnation, but what if he's a future incarnation and Smith knows about him because he just dived into his own time stream and knows all of his incarnations?  No one is supposed to go there.  Who knows what you could learn?

I was of the assumption that Hurt is going to be "Doctor Zero", pre-Hartnell. The 11th Doctor said timelords pick a name for themselves as a kind of promise to be a certain person (which fits with the established lore so far, with all noteworthy Gallifreyan timelords taking single-word monikers like Doctor, Master, Omega, etc).

So perhaps Hurt is who the Doctor was before he took the name "Doctor". Maybe he's the reason the Doctor changed his name, stole a TARDIS and spent the rest of his days avoiding the Timelords and trying to be someone else, never divulging his original name.

That being said, 11th Doctor also says "He's the one who broke that promise", which does seem to imply that whatever horrible thing he did, it happened sometime during his time being known as the Doctor, which does fit the theory that he was a regeneration between 8th and 9th, during the Time War.

But I'm still hoping Hurt is a regeneration from before Hartnell, a kind of pre-Doctor, whose actions are the reason he became the person he is. Would fill in some much more interesting gaps in the Doctor's history than the Time Wars.

And, for the record, I think  Richard Ayoade would be a brilliant Doctor.

2013-06-20 11:48:50 PM
Also, if Clara has been into the Doctor's timestream and seen "all 11 faces", that does seem to imply that the 11th Doctor is the end of the line. But clearly that's not what the writers have planned. Wibbly wobbly, etc etc...

People always throw a list of names out that have far more star power than what the BBC casts for.  It's going to be someone more along the lines of a Chiwetel Ejiofor, whom the vast majority of DW fans have either never heard of or have to search IMDB to remember they "saw him in that thing".
