No, earlier article indicated she (partially deaf girl) was banned from using sign language in the bus because it frequently caused disruption where other kids were taunting her and her friends for using sign language. School decided to punish the victim. Parents were suing and school was sticking to its decision until it hit the media.

Did anyone actually specify that dangerous activity the school acted to prevent?  I think other students probably harassed the girl and instead of dealing with the bullies the school told the victim to stop asking for it.

That they even considered it is grounds for hanging every one of those assholes.  Start with the state superindendant and hang all of them right down to the principal of the school.

Most likely... though there are also schools with "nothing but English because f the browns" policies that might, stupidly, be enforced against ASL.

Ah, so this the new tactic to stop school bullying; punish the kid being bullied for doing or being something "wrong".

I read a story a while back where a deaf kid was killed by a gang 'cause they thought he was throwing out rival gang symbols.

Not the story I was thinking of but this works too.

Then they could have expelled her because the adverse attention was disruptive to the educational system, which they invoke "gee, we have no choice, since we take Federal funds".

Danica Lesko was told by her school principal that her use of sign language was "disruptive."

uuuhh, how the fark is ASL disruptive, was she flailing her arms in a display for help, or are these officials that stupid?

"The Leskos have already sued the school district over an incident they said caused the girl's hearing damage, when a student set off a bottle rocket in a hallway in November. "

Thanks, funny thing is all the news that this site linked to was new except
http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=93466&page=1#.UcNKOzd0vnF
which didn't put a year in the date, but April probably matches 2001 April.

The other news sites including Washington post are reporting this as new news. Fail all around.

It would seem a good idea, Save The Children, if all school administrators were required to learn sign, Save The Children.
They could, Save The Children, spend some of the Continuing Ed crap they waste time at each year, Save The Chillin, learning something other than "zero Intelligence/tolerance".

Won't SOMEONE Save The Children.

Bus driver.  Then the principal backed him and the district backed the principal.

There are too many shiatheads working in schools. I know someone who teaches at an elementary school. A student in a different classroom has cancer. Bullies are teasing her about her cancer. What's her teacher's solution? She should learn to toughen up and take it.

2013-06-20 02:57:05 PM
I feel shiatty about it now but I remember getting pissed at a couple of deaf students signing back and forth to each other after the grade school monitors shut off the cafeteria's lights because we were all being rowdy. Forced fifteen minutes of silence and I was steamed because they could still "talk" and ratted them out to a teacher. God, was I a douche.

2013-06-20 02:58:04 PM
Well, if the students are required to remain seated and wear seatbelts then sign language could be considered "disruptive" on the bus, but only if "disruptive" means unsafe.  Someone using sign language could not communicate with most other kids on the bus without violating the rules of remaining seated and wearing a seatbelt.  You cannot sign with someone who is behind you.  So, I can see how whoever would want to prevent her from unbuckling her seatbelt in order to communicate with her fellow students.  But, was she even unbuckling her seatbelt?  Regardless, they school went full derp on this one.

Zero tolerance = Zero intelligence.

Seems like your teacher friend should be putting in a call to CPS, to the school's principal, the student's parents, basically anyone who would listen to him/her.

She could communicate with the kid next to her.  It sounds like this was a blanket "do not sign with anyone" rule, which is really odd because it's so arbitrary and capricious.
