Ah yes, but in a libertarian paradise, they would have simply kicked out the tenets, possibly with large guns in tow, instead of trying to scare them out.

Were they trying to evict em so they could get new tenants at a higher rate?

Or they're just bat-shiz insane...

Ah, spelling nazis, only second the grammer nazis and capitalization nazis in their reign of terror.

We were evicted from our hole in the crawl space.  We had to go and live in a lake.

Then I looked at the mugshots in the linked CNN article.

Now I'm thinking batshiat crazy.

Being devious and of questionable sanity, I'd come up with fun & kooky ways to retaliate. For instance, the roofing nail doormat or the 15000RPM washing machine. Garbage that returns home. It's the little things...

Isn't contract law like the one thing that libertarians think should be enforced? People are capable of rationally entering into agreements, but not of violating those agreements without penalty. Now, if they didn't want to be terrorized by their landlords, they should have put that in the lease agreement, their failure to is no one's fault but their own.

Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord...kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking, do he bite?
Kill my landlord...kill my landlord.
Slip in his winda', break his neck.
Then his house I start to wreck.
Got no reason, what the heck?
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord...

Yea... unfortunately San Francisco has rent control which includes the inability of landlords to evict tenants for any reason beyond a serious breach of contract. If you want to sell the house, you can sell it occupied, but you can't just evict them because you want to sell the house.

That's why you should rent out the whole house except for a closet, and set up an 'office' in it, so you technically reside part-time in the house, hence it is no longer a rental agreement, but a sub-lease, so rent control is no longer applicable.

I love you SF, but seriously, get your head out of your ass. You're not helping.

As someone living in a not-up-to-code place in DC (thanks, landlords who have ignored us for months!), I am not getting a kick out of this.

// they just neglect their responsibilities as landlords, though; not actually actively trying to get us out
// all renters should get a copy of the housing code and rifle through it - chances are, your landlord has screwed you (or is screwing the city, or both)

I have a similar situation in Seattle, with added landlord creeping towards senility goodness, to the point that I have to keep a downloaded copy of my bank statement on hand to show her when she cashed the rent check that I wrote.

Good times!

They bought the place planning to renovate it and sell units.  Obviously didn't consult a lawyer first.

God I'd forgotten that skit. A friend and I taught our children to recite it much to our wives' disapproval.

The owner just filed Chap7 (for the second, or possibly even third, time since 2011) and the management company now refuses to communicate with us except to ask for the back rent we're withholding until they fix things.

Good times indeed.

// and the city apparently isn't bothered by their lack of occupancy permits for the place, a business licenses to legally run it, being up to code to allow people to legally live there, which seems weird

Maybe they can't afford to fix those things because you won't pay your god-damned rent!

four-year, four-month prison sentences

Steal millions of dollars or millions of people's data, get no prison.

Pangea: Maybe they can't afford to fix those things because you won't pay your god-damned rent!

Maybe they can use some of the rest of the tens of thousands of dollars we've paid them since last summer to fix things, per the terms of our lease. Also, DC law (precedent, really) says we're allowed to withhold rent as a means of incenting our landlord to, you know, landlord.

That last sentence is exactly why every tenant (and landlord) should brush up up housing law with every move.

What if you make millions of dollars on that same data?  No prison, just a business model.

That's pretty much the case in NYC: landlords asking for high rents but at the same time, rack up building code violations as long as a bill from the Senate.  A lot of people have taken up to putting the rent in an escrow account until repairs have been done.  What the City Council should do is just take over the buildings or put them in some type of receivership until the buildings are fixed.

That's the first thing I thought of. Even if you sue the landlord, how much could you actually get from the cheapskates? I figure not much. The shotgun sounds like a good idea, stand your ground and all that.

Stupid. Better than fighting tenants for two years get them out in a month by offering a positive referral and a full refund of the security deposit and last months rent they day they move out.

They will be less resentful and so less likely to trash the place, they will have money to make getting into a new place easier and you save the costs of a fight and having a nonprofitable apartment.
