ManateeGag: Superjoe: Silly_Sot: Bill Nye is a scientist. Paul Zaloom is an actor.

Uh, yeah. So?

I think Beakman is funnier, and way weirder.

I think the point is that Bill Nye has the knowledge to back it up, Paul Zaloom is just some schmuck playing a part.  Even Mr. Wizard, though not formally educated in science, had more science knowledge than Paul Zaloom.

I think the point is they all made science fun, and got kids interested, and for that they deserve much respect.

Bill Nye got his start doing sketch comedy on ALMOST LIVE, so while he is, in fact, a mechanical engineer
by training, he has acting chops, and I would put it to you that it was those chops that have given him the
success he's had as a mass media science educator as much as his first-hand scientific skills.

meanmutton: The fact that Nye knew a thing or two about science (whereas the actor who played Beakman didn't) might have helped his longevity.

It's true but, honestly, when I was the right age to watch either show, I preferred Beakman.

These days, I've come to appreciate Nye, but both of them served the great cause of helping to excite kids about science.

Always found Beakman entertaining and Nye annoying but I applaud the work he's doing now.

Peki: Mr. Wizard frowns on your shenanigans; yells for you to get off his lawn.

/CSS: He was born in 86, me in 83. My science show is Mr. Wizard, his is Bill Nye.

Damn. I grew up on Mr. Wizard and I'm ten years older than your fiance. My kids (and I) watched Beakman, Nye, and VHS tapes of Sagan's 'Cosmos' growing up. You younglings make me feel old.
