meat0918: Carn: Marcus Aurelius: DrPainMD: "Little plague bearers?" Really? According to the CDC, for every (depending on the disease) 50-100 vaccinations, the number of people who get the disease decreases by one. Just ONE. But, pro-vacers have never been ones to let science get in the way of a good rant.

It's called "herd immunity".

How many kids in your neighborhood have died recently from pertussis?  How many have died from mumps?  Measles?  Rubella?

None, you say?

How about that.

Or farking smallpox.  Or polio.

Jesus farking christ people, if vaccines do cause such things as autism, that is still a very small price to pay COMPARED TO THE DISEASES THAT WE ARE VACCINATING AGAINST!  You wanna skip the flu shot, knock yourself out.  But get the important ones for you and your kids.

Can I skip it next year?  I promise to get my MMR booster though.

I got my flu and TDaP shots last October, and GODDAMN that tetanus one hurt for days.

//Volunteer at my kid's schools, seems prudent to get pertussis shot because it's running around pretty well these days.

I'm on the fence about the flu shot unless you're elderly or have other health problems.

Wtf

My grandmother spent the rest of her life in a wheelchair (and she didn't even have one of those until around age 20) due to polio at 8. Where she came from, it was standard to pull kids out of school around 10th grade, depending on how much you were needed on the farm. She didn't even get to finish 3rd grade because they simply didn't accommodate handicapped kids in schools in her town and era.

I cannot imagine the devastation a resurgence of a disease like this. How can people be so farking short-sighted??

I'm honestly not trying to snark, but have you ever had the flu?  Real, debilitating, two-weeks-of-fever, "oh god I'm shivering so hard my bones are aching" influenza, not just the bad colds that lots of people use interchangeably?

I had what was most likely the swine flu.  It was one of the only flu strains in circulation in my county at the time, and I got it before the vaccine was available (which at the time I would have skipped anyways).

I was sick for 10 days. My highest fever was 103.5.  I was coughing up blood by the end of those 10 days.   My doc gave me antibiotics in case I was developing pneumonia, and I hacked and coughed for another 3 months after "getting better".   I dropped 10lbs because even though I wasn't vomiting, I wasn't hungry and barely had the strength to sip water.  I was out sick from work for nearly 2 weeks.

Even with the crap effectiveness of the flu shot some years, I'll take a partial shield over that nightmare again.

I was kinda joking about skipping it.  I did feel like shiat though for a few days after the shots.  Passing out during them didn't help.

Yes I have.  It sucks a lot but because there are so many strains, I wonder if it's really very effective.  You can get the flu vaccine and still get the flu.  Now if we get some super flu like in Contagion, I want that vaccine please.  I feel like vaccines should be for things that are potentially fatal.  Granted, flu is fatal to elderly and people with other health issues so they should definitely get the vaccine.

Felt fine on wednesday, a little funny on thursday, saw the dr on Friday - then it was Tuesday.
I lost the better part of four days there and was quite ill for the next week and a half.

Don't really care if it's full of mercury and DDT, give me the damn shot and get it ON.

Antivaxxers are doubling down on the stupid. First by putting their kids and everyone else at risk of potentially fatal, invariably distressing and easily preventable diseases. And second for doing so for an utterly refuted reason.

Yeah, you guys may be right.  Even if not fatal, it's bad enough to be worth the partial coverage.

Bender The Offender: KimNorth: Really? They see this as working? Have they even been seeing what has been going on with illegal immigration? People making fake documents no problem. An immunization card your preschool kid could write up.
Props for trying but like every other law unless your going to enforce it, it just keeps the honest staying honest.

Titers can often prove wether or not someone has been vaccinated. Before I started nursing school they had to have my shot records and have my family md draw titers as a prerequisite for admission.

When I went to grad school, the university required my immunization records, which had been lost, so i got titers instead. Turns out that I didn't have antigens for mumps.(got the MMR when I was little, but apparently the mumps part didn't take) I was admitted but told if there were any cases of mumps reported on campus, I would have to stay home.

About two months in, I was at the school clinic because of an eye infection and told the doc about the lack of mumps immunization. He left for a couple minutes, came back with a needle and a swab and stuck me before I knew what was happening. No longer need to worry about the mumps!

I mean yeah, it's only good for the current year's strain but still...my infant son is still getting over this winter's flu that turned to pneumonia (he was too young to get the jab) and he lost a huge amount of body weight.  Nothing like seeing your baby getting thin and wobbly while they're coughing so hard they can't sleep.

I got interviewed on the street about the flu vaccine once. I was holding my then 8 month old daughter, and the journalist wanted to know if I'd get her the shot. I told them yes, her doctor recommeded it, and I think it's a public duty to vaccinate.

Judging from their faces, that wasn't the crazy antivaxxer mother they were hoping for.

I had my titers checked when I worked at a hospital.  Apparently, one of the vaccinations that I had as a kid didn't "take" (according to my titers), so I had to get the vaccination again*.  I don't remember which one it was, though...

*Now that I think about it, this has happened to me twice for the same vaccine.  One of those buggers just doesn't seem to work for me.

Fixed that for you.

But, I will humor your stupidity.  Let us take the upper number and say that 100 vaccines reduces the number of people who get the disease by one.  Just ONE.  So, with a population of about 309,000,000 people and at a rate of 1 per 100 that would 3,090,000 people who would have contracted the disease.  I think in America that there are 15 diseases that are children are vaccinated for, so that would be 46,350,000.  And if the number fluctuates from between 50 and 100 then that number would be higher.  Even if there were a 50% overlap it would still be at least 20,000,000.  So yeah, let us not let facts get in the way of some anti-vaccer rants.

Yeah.  Let's ignore the simple FACT that diseases have been completely eradicated through vaccination.  And let's ignore the FACT that diseases that were virtually unheard of have made a comeback because of idiots who think vaccination doesn't work or causes autism.

Because in olden days,  there was no "processed" anything! People lived all natural and everyone knows "natural is better!" Or some moronic BS like that. Parents too ignorant or cheap to get their kids vaccinated need to spend a few weeks in a Third World country, and see how "natural" works in reality.

Because they want someone else to blame instead of having to accept that it is most likely a genetic disorder (at least that is what the research is suggesting, though not proven).
