Oddly enough, riño is a conjugation of reñir (to quarrel or scold).

I was wondering how this was going to work out with Rubio-as-the-young-darling, actually. Not just for Rubio, but other (R)s who quietly favor guest worker programs, amnesty, and things that do not jibe with xenophobic Tea Party Doctrine.

GOP: No political party has complete unity, but you have no unifying, reasonable, diplomatic core, whatsoever.

Rubio: the Tea Party loved you for your potential to swing the numbers in the  conservative Hispanic demographic vote, but they don't want to have anything to actually do with representing constructive dialogue regarding issues that surround this community.

Pull away now and see about filling the immense vacancy there seems to be for party moderates.

The GOP will pass 18 more abortion bills and Obamacare repeals before it passes immigration reform.

The ironic thing: the 16th one will actually go somewhere BUT THEY JUST WON'T STOP.

They want the support and the votes but not the people nor the culture.  As DuBois said, "The price of culture is a Lie."

That WaPo article is just chock full of schadenfreude win.  The idea of the Great Conservative Hispanic Hope getting primaried by the Tea Party is too rich.

2013-06-20 10:59:36 AM
More lies from the liberal lamestream MSM media:

"In the audience, a sea of homemade signs announced "Legalized = Invasion" and "The Melting Pot Floweth Over" and "Exporting Illegals = Importing Jobs for Americans" and "God Will Take Care of Them There: Close the Borders.""

No misspellings? Proper use of a colon? There is no way these signs were at a Tea Party rally.

That would require the ability to analyze and react to reality.

The tea party should tone down the anti-immigrant rhetoric. They're going to get a reputation as bigots.

I hate to judge because I am also not a good person and I really have no right, but I really could not help thinking that Tea Partiers that go to rallies are maybe the worst people on the planet, or at least way up there. I have talked to the type of Tea Partiers that do this, and they are fueled by hating on everyone and everything.

That seems to be their life's goal: hating people and places and things and ideas, all the nouns, out in public and as loudly as possible for everyone to see. I don't even see it as a political movement anymore so much as a bunch of folks that just want to yell about stuff and make pithy signs to hold up.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: No misspellings? Proper use of a colon? There is no way these signs were at a Tea Party rally.

Maybe the writer couldn't bring him/herself to actually putting the butchery to paper and just communicated the intent of the sign out of mercy and self-preservation.  "I don't need to include their errors, because their actual message is probably enough to get the same point across."

I agree that it might get tiresome inserting "[sic]" after every misspelled word, but a journalist needs to preserve the truth, no matter how eye-rollingly stupid it may be.

If the GOP wants to get to the white house, they need the Tea Party to disapprove of the GOP candidate. Sure Tea Party members will still vote for anything with an R in front of it, so no votes lost. To appeal to the middle they need a shunned candidate.

Cruz seems much more at ease with craven pandering than Rubio. It may be a while.

/plus being canadian makes him seem whiter.

The contrarian Tea Party loves a contrarian.

Problem is, elected legislators have to take positions on things, opening the door quite wide for...let's just say "an unnamed contrarian party" to set their contrarianism on you.

What did Obama accomplish in just two terms? He, apparently, drove the GOP completely insane. Well done, well done.

/For his next trick, he'll drop your insurance rates.

2013-06-20 11:40:39 AM
The fundamental confusion here is that the Tea Party thinks Rubio works for them and needs to do what they say. Their idea was to reach out to Hispanics to help the GOP gain more power, not because they necessarily wanted the Hispanics. Their strategy went something like this:

1. Try to win votes by pandering to a specific demographic
2. Elect someone who is a member of the demographic
3. Expect that elected official to vote on legislation that marginalizes or goes against that demographic
4. Protest when he doesn't

That's why they swarm to an anti-immigration rally.

I'm afraid that's what it's coming to.  The patients are running the asylum, and I'm probably not long for this party.  I'm not pure enough to be a libertarian, either, and my economics and abortion positions are way out-of-line with the Democratic Party.  When the GOP splits into Evangelicals and Other, I'll be in the Other, whatever that's called.

2013-06-20 11:57:04 AM
Heritage's Rector fielded that question. "I regard my vote as something like a property right," he said, "and when you give it out willy-nilly and freely to people whose claim on that property right is that they broke our laws, I feel deeply insulted. And I say, 'You stole from me!' "

"Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country. "

One of these quotes sounds American.

I doubt it.  It take cajones to go against the Tea Party, and it's not that they'll vote for someone else (though some will vote libertarian) but they'll stay home just to watch you burn.  I've had Republicans tell me they would rather a Democrat won the seat than a "RINO".
