this is an outrage

Yes. Clearly. Because no Hispanic owned taco/burrito franchise has ever used the mustachioed sombrero wearing icon to hawk their wares. Ever. It's just not done.

As a Mexican-American I have to say that I see nothing offensive about that picture.  It's just a silly photo, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not seeing anything insensitive about this really

Insensitive is wearing black face and eating fried chicken while holding a water melon

I'm offended that people get so easily offended about something that was fun for the participants.

Average joe, okay, but you pay fire Chief's good money to make sound decisions, this was not one.

Cultural Insensitivity =/= racial or ethnic insensitivity.

So it's not different than making fun of any culture:
Idiots with beat boxes and pants on the ground.
Idiots with huge statues of saints in bathtubs in their yards.
Idiots who think Chicago style pizza is food.
Idiots who think tuna hot dish casserole with peas in it and crumbled potato chips on top is cuisine.
Idiots who think they speak French, yet live in Quebec.

I'm not Mexican-American, but I agree with you. There's a difference in poking fun at cultural stereotypes and flat-out prejudice.

If the fire chief was celebrating a German cookout by wearing lederhosen and playing polkas while cooking bratwurst, that's not prejudicial. It's just playful. There's a certain depection of Germans that would be prejudicial that I could mention, but I'm not, see?

Yeah, who does that guy think he is, a Quebecer?

uh... in los angeles mexicans are an accepted part of society... outside of LA? not so much, but inside L.A. no Mexican or White person should be considered racist, they should just be considered 'hermanos'.

and what else? by 2050, we all will be Mexicans, so it really doesn't matter. just let it go people and enjoy the cross-cultural events.

Right, no one else even knows what Mexicans even looks like, you have to goto Los Angeles, California to see one.

Also, people need to get over themselves and learn that it's ok to have some fun once in  awhile.

If he was holding a leaf blower, a bottle of tequila, a keyring with 300 keys on it, or something of that nature then it might be offensive. I'm pretty sure that the picture FTFA is completely OK.

As another poster commented, cooking brats in lederhosen wouldn't be a problem.

Because apparently the sombreros are fake. Maybe they're cardboard pictures of sombreros, held on their heads with a framework of 2x4s and steel pins in their skulls.

This is not the first time I've heard it suggested that Mexicans are offended by the sight of sombreros being worn by white people.

Perhaps the problem is not sombreros.

A culture, not meant to get anyones chain twisted in their manties. At least it didn't claim to be a race. Doesn't exist.Loves ne some good tacos. I think the best in my village (not a town or city) is the mexican meat market. Good luck finding anyone there who speaks English, but they have a lot of things other stores don't, and their tacos/burritso, and tortas are the best around.Located across the street from a Taco Bell.

This.
I don't get why you would apologize for something like this. You could say you're sorry that some people was offended, sure. Especially if your intention was not to offend. But to apologize for doing it at all, it just sends out the message that we have to behave, at all times, completely neutral to anything at all ever so as to not offend the most easily offendable persons in existence.

Which will be hard, because I'm quite sure my mere existence is offensive to someone.
