I dunno, I'm no film scholar but this was pretty persuasive. Besides, wasn't the whole buzz leading up to the finale the question of whether he'd get whacked? The only "twist" here was the ambiguity. Plenty of people would have bet that he would be (unambiguously) killed as part of the dramatic conclusion to the show about mobsters.

Not the series themselves, just the "zinger" endings.  The Sopranos ending it made it fashionable to not wrap up the ending and instead leave everyone hanging, or go in a completely disconnected direction, even between seasons (thinking Weeds here).

Weird. I literally just finished watching the Sicilian scene from True Romance on YouTube. He doesn't speak, but does appear in a funny way. Huge fan of his role in that movie, The Mexican, obsessed with The Sopranos, etc.

Well, given that the Journey guy let the show use that song, it would appear that Tony didn't die at all (or at the very least, that he wasn't "whacked'). So the idea of a random observer being killed would make much more sense in that context.

I think of The Wire as more of social commentary than simply cops and drugs, but there is something to what you say.

Anyway, I'm not trying to turn this into a different thread.  The Sopranos was unique in showing the family aspect, but mafia shows usually go:  Work up through the ranks, kill off rivals, and live the high life until some young guy does the same to the original protagonist.

It's a shame the guy died so young.

Few actors in recent memory have embodied a character so fully as he did Tony Soprano. I enjoyed him in everything I found him in, and I will miss his work.

Found the clip of him singing Englebert Humperdink

Moving the goalpost would imply I was directing that to his original statement, not ignoring it completely because it had nothing to do with what I said in the least. I never said that obese people and "skinny" people had the same level of risk for heart disease, like he tried to claim - rather a fact that skinny people die of heart attacks. In fact, "skinny people" are the ones that are often missed because people don't think they can have heart attacks.

The myth that skinny people don't have heart attacks is absolutely just that, and it's a deadly one.

For real. Literally too young. People need to litereally get into shape. Being literally overweight litereally does literally kill people every day. Literally.

Also, talking about a person's weight the day they die literally makes you an ass.

Just like you can't talk about gun control on days of mass shootings right?

It's 100% certain that if a mass shooting takes place that a gun was involved. It isn't 100% certain that a person has a heart attack because of weight issues. Could have been heart disease or something else genetic. Even skinny people drop dead of heart attacks. I'd have said the same thing if you implied he was a drug addict or any thing else. hardinparamedic: tenpoundsofcheese: Of course.
That has nothing to do with the "surprise" that a fat guy died of a heart attack.
It is only a surprise when a fit person, like Fixx, dies.

[24.media.tumblr.com image 400x400]

Let's recap.
- I made a Ric Romero comment about a fat person dying of a heart attack.
- You replied with thin people die of heart attacks too.
- someone asked you for statistics about the risks of a fat vs. skinny person dying of a heart attack
- you replied with an irrelevant article about survival rates of people who have heart attacks, which had nothing to do with how often fat vs. skinny people have heart attacks. (speaking of missing the point).

Keep moving those goal posts and making personal attacks, just makes you look stupid.

Eh, Gandolfini was also a well-known party guy. I recall him filming here in New Orleans and part of his contract stated that he couldn't be out boozing or whatever all night. Sure enough, he was so hungover on one day of production that shooting had to be postponed for the day (and that sh*t's expensive). Apparently he was at The Abbey, which doesn't surprise me because that's also where I used to go at 6am with all the other people who just don't know when to call it a night. The Wire was underrated, actually, if we're sticking with the traditional meaning.  You just can't bear to watch Baltimore.  Don't fault yourself, nobody can.

The Wire and the Sopranos are too different to compare on one parallel field.  As far as watchability goes, the Wire and Sopranos used similar hooks. The Wire had some more grounded and honed down writing, and the Sopranos would shoot into orbit every once in awhile, which was great.  If anything Sopranos, Oz, and Six Feet Under are closer in style and dialogue.  I'd only compare the Wire with Game of Thrones, and that's a comparison I'm struggling with nailing down at the moment.

Not that it matters, they're all great television.

ParagonComplex: Carth: ParagonComplex: Carth: 51 is too young. Get in shape people being overweight is literally killing people everyday.

Poor taste is poor taste.

But it is 100% certain that obesity increases the risk for heart attacks and kills thousands of people a year well before they need to die.

I agree we can't be sure Gandolfini died because of his weight but that doesn't mean it isn't worth mentioning. We can't be sure  gun control measures would stop mass shootings but it is still a topic talked about every time there is a tragedy. The reason both are brought up isn't out of disrespect to the dead but to try and preserve the living.

As for poor taste? You've been on fark 8 years. my comments are tasteful compared to many in RIP threads.

I used to feel the same way till I heard Chase's rationale for handling it that way - he was basically irritated (with some justification) at the way people expect every storyline to be resolved in what they consider a proper way. The way they did it adds an important sense of realism to the show, I think, since you don't always get that sense of closure in real life either.

Actually, he did. Gandolfini said they filmed a whole death scene for Tony and he was upset that they didn't use it.

If it's not in the show, then it's not in the show - it's not exactly unheard of for content to be considered (and even filmed) before being rejected in the end.

Personally I don't have strong feelings about whether or not Tony died per se (in that I don't particularly want him to have died or to not have died) - I just don't like the most popular explanation for how he was supposedly whacked. My biggest problem is with the clumsy and unsubtle lengths the show goes to make you suspicious of that one guy who goes to the bathroom. It's like with the opening scene in 24, or that creepy arson investigator in Dexter just to name a couple recent examples - whenever I see a show making such a conspicuous effort to make a guy stand out like that, I just assume that it's misdirection of some sort. I mean, it may even turn out that the guy actually does whack Tony, but it would just feel a little silly to me in the context of the scene.

My own interpretation is that Tony just straight up passes out, and then possibly has a heart attack while he's unconscious.

The viewer was meant to experience the feeling of being whacked through Tony, but to suggest that the show "whacked the viewers" is ridiculous.

There needs to be a word for people finding delight in an incorrect audience-focused interpretation.

For you to suggest only your interpretation is correct is asshattery.

Ok, sure, let's ignore all the careful work that went into the writing for the episodes setting up a striking finale, just because we think Chase wanted to indulge in some metafictional narrative stunt.

If you want to feel clever for that interpretation, go nuts. It's the intellectual equivalent of making sure even the losers get a medal in elementary school soccer games, but hey, it's your right.

Read his bio and you'll see what a sad, pathetic place the US has become.

James grew up in Park Ridge, NJ,  a suburb of New York City.  His parents were Italian immigrants.  His father was a mason, and his mother worked in the cafeteria if a local public school.   After high school, Gandolfini earned a degree from Rutgers University.

"So what?", you say.  A couple of generations ago, working class people could afford to BUY their own homes in neat little town, raise a family, and send their kids off to State U.  Today the average college grad would be hard pressed to buy a home in Park Ridge, and most kids leave school tens of thousands in debt.

So how's that supply side stuff working out for you Joe/Jane American?

/RIP Tony, and RIP America.

Biological Ali: dougfm: mechgreg: bulldg4life: What's the over/under on number of posts before someone tries to claim Tony Soprano doesn't die right at that black screen?

I'll take that one. He didn't die. A surprise twist where Tony dies is super hackey writing. And David Chase is a lot of things but he wasn't a hack.

Nah, they would have filmed that, if for no other reason than  to pull the rug out from the audience.
Throughout the show, we knew there was only one way Tony's life would end. The audience tuned in to see Tony get killed. They got what they wanted, but Chase just didn't indulge them with blood splatters and melodramatic wailing from Carmela, like you would see in countless other gangster stories.

Plus, nowadays, people kind of expect a misdirect. A bigger misdirect is for the character to do exactly what the audience thought they would do.

hardinparamedic: tenpoundsofcheese: - someone asked you for statistics about the risks of a fat vs. skinny person dying of a heart attack

Uh, no. he did not. He asked me this:

jaytkay: Please educate us with statistics showing skinny and fat people are at equal risk of hard disease.

That's nothing what you say he asked me.

Next time, read a little better before you go off on a soapbox. You look less like an idiot.

See, I don't know about that, especially after reading about what Chase had to say re: people whining about the lack of "closure" after the Pine Barrens episode. The man clearly doesn't feel as though he has any obligation to resolve plots in the most intuitively satisfying ways.

I will concede that Tony being assassinated is probably the closest thing to how a show like that is typically "supposed" to end. I just don't think that it's clear that Chase would have necessarily wanted to close the show in such an obvious way. And even if Chase did have something in mind re: what "really" happens, I don't think the people who watch the show are under any obligation to accept it. It's what happens when you go with a deliberately ambiguous ending - if he wanted there to be a definitive answer (and I don't know that he did), then he should have given it in the show itself.

Then of course there's the interesting anecdote about the Journey guy, and the circumstances under which he let the show use that song in the end. Not necessarily definitive proof about what "really" happened, but Chase obviously said something to the guy which finally convinced him to come around.

My husband and I actually loved that show. We wanted to hate it since it supposedly killed Deadwood, but we watched it and ended up loving it. You really had to just throw out any ideas about typical storytelling and just let it wash over you. The guy who played Al in "Married with Children", Ed something or other, was *fantastic* in that show.

HBO farked up when they cancelled Carnivale before any of the mysteries were revealed, when they cancelled Deadwood (no reason at all to do that, I don't give a crap what the excuse was, it was bullshiat), and when they cancelled Rome because it was expensive. If that's all you took away from 86 episodes of nuanced, full-spectrum characterization, I honestly feel bad for you. It was a brilliant sustaned performance, and I'm far from the only one who thinks so. From The AV Club:

"Tony Soprano was, like all humans, a complicated mess, and James Gandolfini made the character the most complete realization of that ineffable human condition in the history of the medium. Beneath the superficial exterior of the 'mob boss'--as shallow an archetype as was ever created--Gandolfini found bottomless layers: the anxious father, the affection-starved son, an alternately loving and terrible husband, a helpless romantic, a coldblooded pragmatist, an arrested-adolescent goofball, a raging bull, and on and on. That he contained these multitudes so effortlessly is what made Tony Soprano real."

Also, is anyone really surprised? He was grossly overweight and didn't seem like he had too many healthy habits. That is what happens to you when you disrespect your body; you die too young.

I didn't know about this essay, but it's exactly what I've been telling frustrated people since the finale aired.  I'm not sure what they would have preferred-- a boring family dinner and fade to black with Journey accompanying the credits,  or an absolute bloodbath in which our favorite characters get murdered.  Because, you know, Meadow is now blocking the assassin's exit, possibly startling him with her entrance at the exact moment he pulls the trigger.  She did enter fairly quickly.  Did they really want to see that sh*t go down?  It would've been gratuitous and would have negated all the skill and poise of the series up to that point.  The cut to black was not just the best ending possible, it was the only acceptable one.  And it was hardly coy or even vague, as this writer meticulously points out.

Thanks for the link, it's a good read so far.

Carth: But it is 100% certain that obesity increases the risk for heart attacks and kills thousands of people a year well before they need to die.

You probably aren't expecting this, but I suppose you're exactly right. My apologies for singling you out. I see your point of view, and I can understand it completely. You're also correct about obesity, and I suppose it was wrong of me to automatically assume you were being negative or rude for pointing out that fact. The fact is something wacky and zany was going on for a 51 year old man to drop dead of a heart attack. Plus, yes, let's be honest, we wasn't a healthy weight. He wasn't morbidly obese, but he was certainly overweight. So yeah, it wasn't fair for me to single you out.

Tom Cruise took the world's longest elevator ride for the sake of getting through a lot of clumsy exposition, then he managed to make a maybe-suicide almost anti-climactic, then the credits rolled, I went home, and watched the original, infinitely superior, "Open Your Eyes" and saw a topless Penelope Cruz, playing the same character much better.

Seriously, "Open Your Eyes" is fantastic.
