Anything to keep the plebs from getting uppity. If they aren't hanging by their fingernails, those not-quite-subsistence-level jobs won't be as attractive and we'll have to start paying more.

Hey asshole,

Try doing it for 6 months, not one week. See what eating like that long term does to your physique and your psyche, not to mention your bowel movements, blood pressure, and blood surgar.

Instead of donating the rest of the money to a food bank, consider that you entertainment budget. See how much fun and how many friends you have in 6 months.

Do that. Then we'll talk.

Sincerely,

Anyone who has ever actually HAD to live on food stamps

Two boxes of Honeycombs cereal
Three cans of red beans and rice
Jar of peanut butter
Bottle of grape jelly
Loaf of whole wheat bread
Two cans of refried beans
Box of spaghetti
Large can of pasta sauce
Two liters of root beer
Large box of popsicles
24 servings of Wyler's fruit drink mix
Eight cups of applesauce
Bag of pinto beans
Bag of rice
Bag of cookies

I'm not a dietician or a nutrition expert, but that isn't a healthy diet.

Yes, you could live off that for a week, but I would think that after weeks or months you would suffer malnutrition or vitamin / mineral deficiencies.

But surely he gets his vitmins from the fruit drink mixture and the popsicles.

The list does get you your weekly intake of sugars and processed foods, however.

I'm really surprised Wal-Mart and Con-Agra, as well as the massive farm lobby aren't telling Congress to back the fark off food stamp cuts.

It's a giant backdoor subsidy to many corporations that also just happens to be one of the best ROIs of any government program, with the added bonus of keeping people fed.

Fed people tend to not be people ready to revolt.

Do food stamps work that way? Is it per member or per family/adult member? $126 per week food budget for a family of four isn't too terrible, but I didn't know that was the case.

Cut the soda (what, too good for tap water? Afraid of fluoride?), switch out the Honeycomb for store-brand Sweet Hexagons (now with molecules!), lose the popsicles for...something less stupid.

We can cut 5% more!

// also, did he try feeding a family with that?

I was talking to my mother in law this weekend, and she asked what happened to the Food Stamps budget, because in the late 80's/early 90's she and her two daughters had them, and she always was able to buy good quality food (steaks instead of cans of tuna) AND also had stamps left over.

I told her that as a family that had SNAP both in Michigan and Oregon, we never had left over money month to month, and we bought the cheapest and sometimes crappiest food.  In Michigan we had to salvage soda cans for extra cash.

I don't need them anymore, and I am thankful I had them, and I am happy to pay my taxes when it goes to programs like food stamps.  Taxes going to defense contractors building tanks the army doesn't want and jet engines the Pentagon say we don't need.... not so much.

Amen to that. That kind of diet will not save you money in the long run, with the extra money going to blood pressure pills and doctor visits.

Yeah.

Though if you can afford it to begin with, a big slow cooker can be amazing for saving money with those ingredients. Dump them all in, add enough water to cover, add salt if you have it, set timer for 8-12 hours, leave on while you go to work. Turns otherwise tough, junky stuff into surprisingly satisfying stews. Get frozen store brand green beans if they're on sale to add more vegetable to the mix.

Where's your veggies?  Lean protein?  Supplemental fruit?  High fiber sources?  You know the BASICS OF A REAL FARKING DIET.  This list is for a malnourished college student who's likely to add the freshman 30 and hit obesity by age 23.  Here's the real problem with that list - notice how everything is labeled as "bag of" or "box of" or "can of"?  Not a perfect correlation, but it's a good indicator that your diet is crap, and shouldn't be the only route for someone trying to improve their life and be healthy.

They might not starve, but you're programs are going to be dealing with a LOT more medical bills being charged to Uncle Sam than the piddly amount you saved in food costs.

This really does kind of show a strange trend in political mentality. As an admittedly bleeding heart liberal who thankfully hasn't had to go on food stamps, my thought it "Wow, that's horrible and would certainly reduce my standard of living if I had to do it. I feel for the people who have to." The Republican argument seems to be "Bullshiat, they have it to good, anyone can get by like that! I haven't, and if other people are doing worse than me they must have messed up! I'll even prove it in a very limited sense!"

Yup. Let's just say there's more than one reason that people out of their early 20s rarely eat that stuff.

If you're an actual adult and you want Ramen noodles, go get them from an Asian market. They'll cost 4 times as much, but will be 10 times as delicious, and 2-3 times healthier.

It also strikes me as the grocery purchases of someone who has never had to cook for himself seriously beyond college. There are economical, relatively healthy options that are more time-consuming, but all of his choices seem to be salt and more salt.

I know we're discussing the GOP, and therefore Fark has to be au contraire, but I lived from September-April of this past year on a budget of about that amount and I hate healthy and well. I am also unfathomably lazy, but I managed to make big dinners on the weekend to last me throughout the week.

I should mention I'm not advocating for cuts to food stamps. Admittedly it would be tough to get by on much less.
