A scandal appears on the horizon?  Also recently no longer an independant director of Apollo Group, Inc.  Let the speculation begin!

Weird.  Something like this means there is some stink that won't rub off.  Sexual harassment, personal shenanigans.

Why didn't I think of that?  I could have spent years laughing at those commercials.

I blame Deepak Chopra, who is on MW's board.

Oh wow... Something major must be happening, otherwise I don't see how they could do that without really farking themselves.

I would have thought they'd wait until the verdict at least, but I suppose killing a 17 year old under any circumstances is bad PR.

/DRINK?

I have a weird crush on him. He has soft eyes on a rugged face, which always captivated me on those commercials.

After years of trying and failing the board members were unable to grow a beard as sweet as Mr Zimmer's.  In a fit of rage at their own lacking in facial hair follicles they fired poor Mr Zimmer.  I seriously feel for Mr Zimmer because I too suffer from beard envy.  I cannot list the number of jobs I have lost because the boss felt inferiour to my beard.  And no... I was not fired for showing up to work repeatedly with no pants on, which I did but that is another class of envy that I shall not share at this moment..

Maybe he fell off the wagon.

Update from ABC - he released a statement.

"Over the past several months I have expressed my concerns to the Board about the direction the company is currently heading. Instead of fostering the kind of dialogue in the Boardroom that has, in part, contributed to our success, the Board has inappropriately chosen to silence my concerns by terminating me as an executive officer."

So intra-boardroom spat.  No scandal.

Considering the extremely large golden parachutes guys like him get, he probably does like the way he was fired.

That's my thought, too. The board wants to make quality control and material cuts in costs, and he knows that will destroy the brand he's built over 40 years.

I was recently reading how the founder used an unorthodox hiring method in giving people a chance to work at his stores by not doing background checks on them.

I wonder if this was a factor in letting him go and as perhaps the company was concerned about future liability in hiring persons with a serious criminal record...

Sad but likely true. Apparently a 20% increase in profits wasn't enough for the board, which is really sad.

A company looking for short-term profits without regard for future sales?  Unpossible.

Background checks are expensive.

Plus all of the great commission sales people I know are substance abusers.

I shop there, so I guess I am an average consumer. I have never made the connection between the racist stalker on trial for murder in Florida and Zimmer. The confessed killer on trial for murder in Florida has a different name from the "You're gonna like the way you look. I guarantee it,"  Zimmer, the face of the company.

Since the company went public, they've been marginalizing him.  He made the company a close-knit unit that generally promoted from within and avoided the 'sale culture'.  As soon as they went public it turned into 'mark up the suits 50%, offer BOGO1/2 sales' and so on.  They also added a couple layers of management and started squeezing hours and adding all sorts of 'quantifiable benchmarks'.  That's a big part of why I quit.  As far as the background checks go, well ol' George loves him the bud, so he didn't feel it was right to drug test his employees.  Needless to say the corporate chaps don't appreciate that kind of live-and-let-live attitude.

/Didn't help that his last three wives were store employees he met at the Holiday Parties.

I never understood it to be unorthodox to hire someone with a criminal record. When these people leave prison they have to support themselves. They can do that by finding a job, or committing crimes. I'd rather see someone working and pay their fair share of taxes, than to be jobless, wind up doing a crime and then going to jail where tax money is spent to keep him there. Unless we want to ship all of our criminals to Guantanamo.

I agree with you, was just wondering if the company saw it differently.
