DRTFA, but let's ask some of those adversaries.

Osama, how's that circle running been going?

.....

Quiet guy.  Looks to be doing more grave spinning than circle running.

How about you, Mohammar?

Nothing from you neither?  The strong, silent type I see.

And how about you guys, the legion of not-so-alive Al Qaeda #2s in charge?

What's that, zombie al-zawahiri?  I should look up?

Ah yes, that must be the new air-to-surface  Hard-Power-Eschewer 3000TM.

Shut up Jennifer Rubin.

It's easy to be critical when your decisions won't end up getting people dead.

2013-06-19 10:56:21 AM
So it's a "Presifart Fartfarta is weak on defense" day? Are we going to go back to being outraged over drone strikes and pervasive surveillance and how Obama's a warmongering psycho tomorrow or are we gonna stick with this through the weekend?

By all means, let's start more wars we don't intend to pay for.

We didn't win the Cold War at the negotiating table. We won by continually challenging Communist aggression and maintaining a strong military that eventually helped bankrupt the Soviet Union.

Too bad your father didn't die in Korea or VIetnam we wouldn't have to read your henhawking now. That's what your asking for right? thousands or hundreds of thousands of people to die, so I am not out of line wishing for your non existence.

Messaging matters, reality doesn't.  Mass media and the internet, rather than increasing information and civic literacy, have created ideological echo chambers, allowing people to limit their information sources to those which confirm their preexisting biases.

I'm very ignorant of Cold War history, but it seems to me that he major instances in which the U.S. used hard power to stop the spread of Communism were met largely with either U.S. failure or stalemate.  Bear in mind that I'm largely thinking of Vietnam and Korea, and can't really remember anything else.  Let the berating begin!

Obama's a center-right politician on economics and military, center-left on social issues, and very right-wing on state power, going after whistle blowers.  Despite all this, he's black, and democratic, and thus will never win over the very people he best represents.  His charisma, and the fact that the only alternatives in the field are robotic plutocrats, fundie nutbags, and overt racists are the only reason he's got support from his own party.

Jennifer Rubin

Ha ha. No.

To a certain extent, the same is true with regard to China. Obama is content to cut our Navy, remain inert when it comes to the South China Sea and invite the Chinese for joint naval exercises. Why does it then come as a shock that China won't budge on cybersecurity?

So, how exactly do we use the Navy to make China conform on cybersecurity? Airstrikes on their server rooms?

Just a reminder to everyone as to what kind of person Ms. Rubin is.

When Iran-Conta felon Elliot Abrams' wife, Rachel, penned the following screed in 2011...

Then round up [Gilad Shalit's] captors, the slaughtering, death-worshiping, innocent-butchering, child-sacrificing savages who dip their hands in blood and use women-those who aren't strapping bombs to their own devils' spawn and sending them out to meet their seventy-two virgins by taking the lives of the school-bus-riding, heart-drawing, Transformer-doodling, homework-losing children of Others-and their offspring-those who haven't already been pimped out by their mothers to the murder god-as shields, hiding behind their burkas and cradles like the unmanned animals they are, and throw them not into your prisons, where they can bide until they're traded by the thousands for another child of Israel, but into the sea, to float there, food for sharks, stargazers, and whatever other oceanic carnivores God has put there for the purpose.

...Ms. Rubin didn't condemn the sentiments expressed therein. Nor did she ignore it.
SHE RETWEETED HER APPROVAL OF IT.

2013-06-19 11:10:48 AM
Well that was inane and devoid of logical analyses. Basically  "whatever Obama does is bad".

I am sooooo glad to hear from the conservative point of view that gave us Iraq.

2013-06-19 11:11:20 AM
The same scenario plays out in Afghanistan, where we are beginning negotiations with the Taliban

Yes, Jennifer.  'Hard', military, foreign policy will solve the troubles of Afghanistan - just like it has for the last 12 years.

This.  The Bay of Pigs was a disgrace, but Kennedy's bluff during the Cuban Missile Crisis stopped WW3. Regan's speech about tearing down the wall was much more effective than a platoon in Germany would have been.

We didn't win the Cold War at the negotiating table. We won by continually challenging Communist aggression and maintaining a strong military that eventually helped bankrupt the Soviet Union.

And look where all that increased military spending got us - we're spending more than the next 10 countries on the list of top spenders, we're the ones who bankroll (with money and materiel) pretty much every major conflict in the world (not that we cause them all, but every time there is an "international reaction/response", guess who's at the top of the list, even corrected for proportional size/GDP), and we're at the point where Congress relies on unnecessary and unwanted military spending to prop up local economies.

We won the Cold War because we attritted slower than the Russkies. Period.

// followed by 15-20 years of unchallenged superpower status coinciding with almost-unparalleled economic growth

Remember our biggest foreign policy concern on 9/10/01?  "China, can we please have what's left of our spy plane back?  If you're done with it, of course."

This stupid coont does realize that if the whole damn planet ganged up on the US, we would probably win militarily, right?  Spend more money on "Defense"!

That complete dipshiat.  China is a strategic ally and the USA's biggest economic partner.  Of COURSE they're going to hack all the info they can - as does the USA, as does ANY country with the budget for it.  Espionage has always, and will always, be a very popular & effective tool of state & commerce.

The author really doesn't seem to get how joint naval exercises are an example of flexing military might in a respectful way.  Basically, by having a joint exercise, their military gets to see, with as much realism as possible, how effective the USA's military apparatus can be - and the USA gets to see just how their "ally" compares.  War games are a very effective way of flexing a country's might without actually starting wars.  You know that whole "speak softly, and carry a big stick" mantra?  It's better for everyone in the room if you show off your big stick without actually beating anyone with it.

If we ain't bombing or invading it means we're asking 'pretty please' and singing Kumbaya. There is literally nothing in between.

2013-06-19 11:20:01 AM
I'm curious, how many new AEGIS cruisers or destroyers does this author think it would take to get China to stop hacking US systems?  That is basically what he's claiming.

I'm trying to imagine that conversation:

XI XINPING: China objects to your hacking accusations.  The fact that you've traced hackers' IPs to the front door of a well known Chinese military base dedicated to cyber-security is inconsequential.  Lots of people live in that area.  It was probably some kid.  Besides, China has had to deal with US hacking incursions for years.  If we were hacking you, which we're not, it would only be fair play.

OBAMA:  Oh yeah?  What do you have to say about this, then?  ::Slides a picture of an aircraft carrier across the table::

XI:  Touche, Mr. President.  Touche.

Problem with the draft is 1/4 or less of Americans pass the physical requirements.
