K-Tel Records is sponsoring the funeral, and you can get the complete service for the incredibly low price of 19.95 for albums, 23.95 for cassettes, and 28.99 for CDs*.

*Must be over 18 to attend.

Pseudo-philosophical question about that: should Slim have been offended that his music was portrayed as making alien heads explode or should he have been happy that he contributed so much to saving the world? I suppose it could have been both.

He looks pretty good for 90 years old.
I take it that the local news station used a fairly current photograph of him.

Dana: OK.
Isaac: It's not Whitman.
Casey: I think it is.
Isaac: It's not  Walt Whitman.
Casey: Well, I'm saying I think it's  Slim Whitman.

"What does Reincarnation mean?"
A cowpoke asked his friend.
His pal replied, "It happens when
Yer life has reached its end.
They comb yer hair, and warsh yer neck,
And clean yer fingernails,
And lay you in a padded box
Away from life's travails."

"The box and you goes in a hole,
That's been dug into the ground.
Reincarnation starts in when
Yore planted 'neath a mound.
Them clods melt down, just like yer box,
And you who is inside.
And then yore just beginnin' on
Yer transformation ride."

"In a while, the grass'll grow
Upon yer rendered mound.
Till some day on yer moldered grave
A lonely flower is found.
And say a hoss should wander by
And graze upon this flower
That once wuz you, but now's become
Yer vegetative bower."

"The posy that the hoss done ate
Up, with his other feed,
Makes bone, and fat, and muscle
Essential to the steed,
But some is left that he can't use
And so it passes through,
And finally lays upon the ground
This thing, that once wuz you."

"Then say, by chance, I wanders by
And sees this upon the ground,
And I ponders, and I wonders at,
This object that I found.
I thinks of reincarnation,
Of life and death, and such,
And come away concludin': 'Slim,
You ain't changed, all that much.'"

My father bought me a Slim Whitman album when I was a kid as a joke so that I would listen to "real music" rather than "that punky crap you are always blasting."   He knew I loved the movie Rose Marie.

I loved that record and god help me I love musical movies featuring the Canadian Mounties.

his appearance with Andy Kaufman on "The Midnight Special" in the early 80's remains priceless. He edifies Andy on his singing style by explaining "It's a falsetta, somethin' I've perfected throughout the years". Slim then lipsynchs his way through one of his songs while Andy looks on with the same wide-eyed wonder of a child who wakes up in the middle of the night to find Santa Claus placing gifts beneath the Christmas tree.

There was a rumor about a tumor nestled at the base of his brain.

Getting back to Slim Whitman: backin the late 70s, his albums were being pitched constantly on TV commercials that described him as a huge in the UK. When my family went to London on a vacation, one of my brothers tracked down his recording studio for the school paper to get to the bottom of the story.  He did get an autographed photo.

For a guy who sang some sad country-western songs, he lived a very long time.
While country music was always abrasive to me, country-western was always smoother and easier to listen to.   I did not think any of the old musicians of that age still were alive.

CSS time:

I grew up in Clay County, FL. Slim's granddaughter was a couple grades behind me in elementary school. I remember Slim and his son put on a concert in the field in the middle of our campus that was supposed to be a Really Big Deal. All I could think was that it was too farking hot for that mess and I'd rather be doing school work than listening to this while sweating bullets in the heat of June in Florida.
