Sounded just like my cats whenever I went to the kitchen to open a can of tuna.

That was cute.
Their 'chirping' quite upset our new kitten.

"waiting" is the key word there.   And waiting.  And waiting.

Are they actually really super young or is that just a kitten throwback when they're begging for food?

Cheetahs do that pretty often. There's a wildlife refuge not far from me that I've gone to a few times, and the last couple times I went, the Cheetahs were being quite vocal and "friendly", walking up to the fence and mugging for photos, meowing and purring at the crowd.  In a lot of ways, they seem more like housecats than other big felines.

Imagine having one as a pet and the reactions you get during walks in the park. The only problem would be the size of the carrion it would probably leave by the door.
