The ways of the hipster douchebag are dark and mysterious.  They are quick to anger and not to be trifled with.

Isn't this the opposite of a hipster purchase? Hipsters take cheap, low quality items (e.g. Fixed gear bikes and Rainier beer) and buy so much of it, that they end up raising prices on items that are otherwise unpopular.

The expanding popularity of electric cars is due to lowering prices and frugality, not irony.

Seriously you would have to be crazy not to consider this.

a three-year lease for $259 per month, with no money down, unlimited miles, a 240-EV home charging station, and auto insurance included.

I would get this in a heartbeat if I wasn't moving in a couple of months. If it is still available after I move then i still might.

Why is this surprising to people?  It was always known that once pure-electric cars made economic sense sales would take off.

GM said early they wouldn't make money until the 2nd-gen Volt.  I clearly remember them saying the first gen was basically an experiment to get to a better 2nd gen.

/Bought a Camry Hybrid--finally made sense for my driving needs.

Didn't you get the memo? Hipster now just means "people we don't like".

Hipster?  Really?  Hipsters usually cling to analog versions long after the digital is proved superior.  They love Apple stuff because it is easy and expensive, not because it is futuristic.

Don't tell Chevy dealers swimming in Volts that.

Having had the pleasure of owning a hybrid with over 100,000 miles on it, I'll stick to a car that I can take to pretty much any mechanic and get fixed.

Versus the hybrid that I had to fix myself because the dealer was incompetent and nobody else wanted to touch it.  Oh? You want an alignment?  Nope.  Want to replace the factory tape deck?  Nope.  Tires?  Sure... oh wait we don't have the size.

I know exactly what you mean. I have the worst time trying to find a mechanic who will change the oil in my electric car!

Only a matter of time. My wife's company just moved their corporate fleet to all hybrids.  Economies of scale blah blah

Can you let us know when the Republicans actually give us their real opinions then?  We have been waiting quite a long time.

This makes me angry and frustrated because it challenges my long held beliefs...

Now I'm off to the rest of the internet, to lecture on why electric cars will never work...

Agreed. If someone's looking at buying a new car anyway, has a commute that fits the range, and has another car in the household for longer trips, electrics look pretty attractive. My CSB:

I got a Leaf in March, it goes about 30 miles on a dollar's worth of electricity (10 kWh at $0.10 each). $30K out the door, $2K for getting and installing a charging station that'll charge my typical day's driving in 1.5 hr (0-100% in 4 hr), $6-7K back on taxes next spring (the $7500 credit is limited to one's tax liability).

Way cheaper to drive than my 2005 Prius. Of course it'd have been even cheaper to just keep driving the old car (it usually is), but replacing it with a new Prius would have been about as expensive upfront, and more expensive ongoing.
