This is going off my memory, but IIRC my mom's 2011 Sonata features breakaway bolts on the engine so it drops when hit in a front-end collision.

Trying to think of a joke here, but really just kinda bummed to hear that the guy who didn't fall in love with the military leadership simply because he was embedded (but, rather, told things as they were) won't be able to write more stories.

Maybe the conspiracy theory crowd will find a way to tie it into Benghaziruguladijonacorngate. Or something.

This sucks.

Michael Hastings was young, talented, appeared to give a damn, and called people in power on their bullsh*t in a way that actually changed things. In many ways, he embodied the ideals that many journalists aspire to. I am noting with incredible cynicism how much the hacks who do the  least to uphold those ideals are mourning him the hardest on Twitter right now, like the trend-following stenographers they are.

I dont give a good two craps about who you worked for, but McChrystal is an ass. Well, he was an ass. He might still be. I will make this simple- a general officer does not do her or himself any good at all being critical of the standing CIC, except by her or himself . Period.

I doubt that. McChrystal isn't the kind of person to be happy someone died in such a horrible way. He of all people knows what it's like to die in a fire. Anyway, it's not like Hastings PERSONALLY got McChrystal fired--that was his own inability to keep his mouth shut (or, alternatively, his blunt honesty, depending on which side of the debate you're on).

Hearing a bit about Hastings on the Maddow podcast.. seems his first big book was written about his girlfriend, another journalist who was killed while in Bagdad.

It just could be both. Dont get me wrong- I voted for the man twice, but he is not exactly a military person, and some of his advisors might be suspect as to their knowledge.

At any rate, rest in peace. I know he left behind a wife and Chris Hayes says they had a young daughter ( or 2 ) , i forget.

IIRC the worst thing they had him on record was mocking Biden, not the CIC.

I remember his psy-ops article.  Wasn't impressed by his work.  Seemed bent on making it otu like we were using secret methods to influence senators when in fact they were just asking the normal questions any intellegent personw oudl of people they were trying to influence.

Dave and the Mission: I'm no car guy, but how does one's engine (transmission?) wind up half a block from the wreck?  Is it one of those 'crumple zone' kinda things?

Study it out.
Study it out.

Look for trace amounts of thermite near the engine block.

Get an old beater with a manual transmission. Then put it in drive and attempt to shift into reverse while going faster than 40 mph. That's what did it for my dad (transmission anyway).

/my dad was not a smart 17 year old

OHDUDENESS: You mean the one linked in the very Boobies? Yeah.

After the crash is not video of the crash as it happened. I could have been more specific. Looks like the "Don't report what you are told when off the record, and just hanging out" gods were displeased.

unlikely: The NSA took over his car's central chip through OnStar and provided unexpected acceleration, the terrain did the rest.

It's a conspiracy between the NSA, the lizard men from space, the lizard men from beneath the earth's crust, the Decepticon Empire, and worst of all (just for shiats and giggles)... Monsanto.

(well Monsanto really is just capitalist motherfarkers)

where did the 100mph come from besides that "witness".   A little convenient that he was watering the street around the time that this happened and he doesn't speak English that well.

Little known fact: Asphalt requires moonlight to grow. Which is why they don't water it during the day.

jpo2269: 404,

McCrystal killed Pat Tillman?

He was the senior officer who signed off on the piece of creative fiction that was CPL Tillman's Silver Star citation, despite the fact that he was told within 24 hours of Tillman's death that it was due to friendly fire.  Most people point to him as the person who kept pushing the bullshiat story up the Awards & Decoration chain.  The day after he approved the fraudulent Silver Star citation, he sent a classified cable to Washington notifying them that Tillman was actually killed by friendly fire, and to be careful handling the cover story.

He was confronted by journalists on how he could approve a Silver Star citation that he knew was utterly false (which, by the way, is a violation of Article 107 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice: False Official Statements).

His excuse was that he didn't read it carefully enough to realize it was "inaccurate."

Right.  The posthumous medal for the most famous enlisted soldier in the Army, and he just skimmed it.

Giltric: 19 Kilo: Dammit.  Now I have to go over to the gun boards to see how 0bama caused this, or if this is just an addition to the Clinton Death List or what sort of -GHAZI this is.

Dammit.

A majority of the posters on ARFCOM are former Mil/leo or current mil/leo who think Hastings lied in his article and book.

What you are attempting to do is like painting anti gay slogans on Chik-fil-a to shame them for donating to gay causes.

Not really sure what your point is...  Should I NOT be going to GD for slack-jawed hyperbole?  Pretty sure that's what I was referencing and looking for.  As to the Team forums, I'm well aware of those.  Check out the custom color scheme on that screenshot.  Know what that means there, cowboy?

GD is where trolls troll trolls. You being a member and all should know this. We've even hooked a couple of media outlets with some garbage posted there.

It's like going into a bathroom stall looking for your moms phone number and finding 87 instances of her phone number written there.

That color scheme looks mighty default.

Wasn't Tillman with an Afghani fighter at the time he was killed? Details were sketchy at the time that happened. shiat was covered up in a way that impressed Hussein so the general got a promotion. I think that's the case.

Exactly.  That's where I go for my FBHOGhaziGateCheckers.  GD was 3 or 4 days ahead of Fark on Umbrellaghazi, so when something like this pops up, I go there to see what the mouthbreathers and trolls say.  But, for all your assertion that it's a pit of trolls, it's also a good barometer of what I'm going to read on any given gun board or conservatard news board.

If I want good, high tone discussion, I'll head up to the member forum and see where the 200+ post MLP thread is at.

I really, really hope this is sarcasm I didn't catch. Every journalist I've met loves to drink.

Yup. Chris Hedges said he drinks a lot to go to sleep because of the PTSD he got covering Yugoslavia in the 90's.

/Can't even imagine how much that would suck

That was probably a more noble reason than most.  My few journalist friends just drink because they like to drink.  Writers in general tend to hit the sauce.
