I'm no car guy, but how does one's engine (transmission?) wind up half a block from the wreck?  Is it one of those 'crumple zone' kinda things?

The NSA took over his car's central chip through OnStar and provided unexpected acceleration, the terrain did the rest.

This is going off my memory, but IIRC my mom's 2011 Sonata features breakaway bolts on the engine so it drops when hit in a front-end collision.

This is standard equipment in all modernish cars. Keeps the engine from going through the firewall.

Yup, it's a safety feature. A very good one.

Trying to think of a joke here, but really just kinda bummed to hear that the guy who didn't fall in love with the military leadership simply because he was embedded (but, rather, told things as they were) won't be able to write more stories.

Maybe the conspiracy theory crowd will find a way to tie it into Benghaziruguladijonacorngate. Or something.

Dammit.  Now I have to go over to the gun boards to see how 0bama caused this, or if this is just an addition to the Clinton Death List or what sort of -GHAZI this is.

Dammit.

If what you think it is is the body, yeah, that's what it looks like.

I'm not given to crazy conspiracy theories, but I've NEVER seen a street crash like that. Freeway crashes, yes, but never a surface street crash. Any of our resident medics know more than me? Cuz that looks like there was an accelerant involved.

Good.

My sympathies for his family and all, but Gen  McChrystal is a good and honorable man who took a bullet for his subordinates because this (yellow) "journalist" could not differentiate blowing off steam in a pressure cooker environment and real insubordination. Wonder if alcohol was involved in his  "accident"....

The General should never have accepted his 4th star - It was a setup for failure all along.

Highland isn't really a "fast" street. I guess at 4:30am there weren't many people on the road, and for whatever reason he decided to drive really farking fast. Getting a Mercedes to throw its engine a half a block down the road, and explode into flames, isn't an easy thing to do.

In addition to his work as a contributing editor for Rolling Stone, Hastings also reported for BuzzFeed. He leaves behind his wife, the writer Elise Jordan.

I look forward to Buzzfeed's followup listicle, "27 SEO optimized quotes about Michael Hastings"

I'll go ahead and confirm you're absolutely full of shiat and are completely retarded as far as the UCMJ goes.

That miller lite bottle in the video was probably apropos of nothing.   Journalists don't like to drink.  It clouds their judgement.

It shouldn't matter if you personally care for the work this man did - the Fourth Estate took a significant loss here.

I was in a wreck in '72 that left the engine block where my liver would have been if Mom hadn't installed seat covers that covered the seat belt latches.   I bounced me off the steering wheel and into the back seat.

This sucks.

Michael Hastings was young, talented, appeared to give a damn, and called people in power on their bullsh*t in a way that actually changed things. In many ways, he embodied the ideals that many journalists aspire to. I am noting with incredible cynicism how much the hacks who do the  least to uphold those ideals are mourning him the hardest on Twitter right now, like the trend-following stenographers they are.

I dont give a good two craps about who you worked for, but McChrystal is an ass. Well, he was an ass. He might still be. I will make this simple- a general officer does not do her or himself any good at all being critical of the standing CIC, except by her or himself . Period.

I doubt that. McChrystal isn't the kind of person to be happy someone died in such a horrible way. He of all people knows what it's like to die in a fire. Anyway, it's not like Hastings PERSONALLY got McChrystal fired--that was his own inability to keep his mouth shut (or, alternatively, his blunt honesty, depending on which side of the debate you're on).
