So, a place that doesn't cater to people who want to inflict their crotchfruit on everyone else is "bad"...?  Too bad more places aren't like this...

Friendly's is an ice cream parlor. Their entire existence is based on catering to kids.

Customer sounds like a giant farking asshole who would eat at a shiathole like Friendly's. fark him. The "split plate" was a dead give away. farking asshole.

Actually we both made the same mistake. The place is not the franchise, but instead a sports bar...great family environment I'm sure.

Ah, well in that case...wait, it's still stupid to insult a customer on their receipt. Probably true, but highly stupid.

As did I.... Friendly's the chain is strictly a NorthEast US thing (I have family outside of Philly, so, I know it from that).  So, this bar in St Louis doesn't likely get into any trouble with the name.

"So customers with children are a joke? This place isn't so friendly,"

If this guy isn't doing standup, he should quit his day job immediately and start.

How are they not being sued by the big chain for Trademark infringement?

FTFA "Gibson says he called in advance to make sure he could bring his young son to Friendly's, despite the restaurant's strict policy of admitting only customers above 21 years of age."

The World Is Not Enough.

The owner stuck up for the waitress? Sorry, but that's an insta-fire pretty much anywhere. I'll put even odds on the two sleeping together.

Of course not! They're usually the punchline.

I also thought it was the ice cream place. I used to love going there when I was little. Now that I know better, I don't go there anymore.

Its on par with Denny's as far as atmosphere and quality go.

Makes me want to go to St. Louis just to eat there and ask them to please never give up on their 21+ policy again.

THIS. I have been living in upstate NY for a couple of years now. Friendly's farking sucks. And they are not friendly.

I'll agree with that. I prefer it to Denny's because our local Friendly's isn't the most depressing place in the city to get a meal.

If you huff and puff and mischaracterize somebody's attempt at making a joke about a given situation into a "so you think my X is a  joke, then?" stance of righteous indignification, you are a jackass and don't deserve further consideration.

Just because I made a joke doesn't mean you are a joke.  Oh, wait, I take it back.

You are a joke, sir.  Good day.

Probably because no one is confusing Paddy's Pub over here with an ice-cream chain.

My Dad took me into places like this as a kid and we still go to the crappiest bars in every town, but I don't think I'll be dragging my kids to a smoky cave to watch me pound $1 cups of Old Style and then grab a 22 oz out of the cooler "for the road."

Not that it messed me up or anything.  It was kind of cool, but not something that's encouraged these days.  Bars used to be more kid friendly in that they told you to go play video games and leave them alone while they pounded a few, and nobody worried if you were being watched.

I will give credit where credit is due.  'farking needy kids' on a bill is pretty funny. The sentiment may be questionable.

They're getting harder and harder to come by. I remember as a kid thinking the bar was magical -- cherries in a freakin' red Sprite with an umbrella? Magic. It was also awesome playing Super Mario Bros. on a huge projection screen.

My Dad's friend owned this bar called The Sidetrack Saloon and they had both Asteroids and that bowling/shuffleboard game. I was entertained for hours.

Maybe they're just a small place and they stick up for each other. I went to a diner and walked in on a customer dispute with her waitress. The customer didn't want to pay for her meal because it came out late and it made her group leave late, despite the fact that the lady ate the whole meal.

The waitress was walking all around the diner loudly mocking the customer. The manager did come out and take the cost of the meal off the bill, but said nothing to the waitress. It's just a local diner and the workers there don't take any crap from anyone.

Friendly's. Late 60's Early 70's Pittsburg, Kansas. Might still be there. Haven't been back since I checked out of college.
Place had a lot of atmosphere.

2013-06-18 04:49:53 PM
I would have circled that on the bill and left no tip, then complained to the management about the waitress. Then again, I'm not the type of guy that's going to bring a kid to a bar to eat, so there's that.

/if they don't cater to under 21, there's probably a reason

You guys ragging on Friendly's (the ice cream place) can all suck it. Give me their Reese's Pieces Sundae any day!

This article annoys me because the man who took his children there is a complete douchebag. SERIOUSLY? You brought your kid to a BAR...then got mad enough when the server biatched and shared all over the internet. YOU SIR ARE THE PROBLEM WITH THE WORLD. YOUR KIND. YOU. You the guy who brings your kids everywhere especially on a DRINKING run. So..I say...I can't wait till the x wife. BECAUSE you know he is no longer married sees this.

St. Louisan here: Friendly's is a south city redneck/hoosier dive bar that happens to serve food. Why he took his 4 year old kid here I never understand. He could drive 5 or 10 minutes and go to any number of more family friendly places where he could go to watch the game and drink some beer while him and his son ate on Father's Day.

My guess is this classy dad got rejected when he tried to take his kid into Johnny's and DBs.

Pretty much, think of it this way you have a server that shows up for all her shifts on time and some couple that's never been in before comes in with their obnoxious rugrats and you really don't want them back, well...
/Granted corporate business's may very.

so you go into a place you know from the start isn't welcoming of kids, and then to thank them for bending the rules for you, you spend a whopping $2.50 for a chicken leg for the kid? Good work.

They hate the customers, they hate their coworkers, and they hate their boss, and they hate policies and prodedures.  That's standard workplace behavior.   Except their repeat business and income depends on good service.  So, they'd better fake it.
Also, if you're going to make fun of someone's kids, you might be risking your own health.  Or a bad reputation on a major news network.

20%+ unless they do something really wrong.

From the comments:

I don't have kids, but I don't think I would have found this funny at all. That meal should have been free.

Serious question:  why should the meal have been free?

Because information wants to be free.  And food is kind of like information.
