I always loved the comment he made about playing himself:
"Once, you play an alcoholic; once, you play a psychopath; once, John Malkovich."

Christ, who is the emotionless, monotone "narrator" of that video??  She turned a cute little informative piece of film history into a dull senior thesis!!

I have never seen the Malkovitch movie, at least, not all of the way through. Maybe I will bum around Netflix today and see if they have it.

Hey Malkovich recently saved the life of  a guy he ran into on the street who had an arterial bleed in his NECK.  Malkovich gets to play himself, because Malkovich is awesome

I would actually argue that perhaps the first instance of an actor portraying themselves in a cameo was a silent film (can't remember the title) starring Marion Davies (Hollywood mistress to William Randolf Hearst) in which she plays a country bumpkin wanting to break into Hollywood. At one point she sees a number of famous silent stars milling about, smiling at the camera before walking off as if they had a shoot to get to. Then Marion Davies stops to talk to someone only for her movie character to pause and say "Eh... she's definitely not as pretty as I thought she'd be."

There's a (not so popular) show on HBO called "House of Lies" Matt Damon plays himself in an episode and is so damn vapid and depraved he's farking hilarious. No shiat.

I realize it's not a movie, but I'm still surprised that Entourage was mentioned.  Stars playing themselves showed up in every other episode.

So... basically the Jimmy Kimmel version of himself?

MINOR SPOILERS FOR BEING JOHN MALKOVICH>>>>>>

I liked that movie, except for the ending. Freaked me out big time.  Even nightmare inducing.  Don't know what it was, but the idea of being trapped like that just really got to me.

I don't watch Jimmy Kimmel (nothing against him, I just work early), but I think it's a bit worse than that.

Coffee and Cigarettes and Being John Malkovich are both genius for this very reason. Time to rewatch them both.

Wings of Desire was in '87.

My mother was a huge fan and I grew up watching Audie Murphy films (That pic is from 'Hell and Back'). I respect the man and his struggles with PTSD, prior to his death.

That said, I cannot compare any of his movies to 'Wings of Desire'. THAT film changed the way I see cinema forever.
