No I think we can all come to an agreement that alcohol was pretty heavily involved

As Taylor and his sons prepared to leave, some of the party-goers were shooting exploding targets with a high-powered rifle, Jensen said. Taylor joined a group of spectators standing behind the shooter. Just before 9 p.m. a shot exploded a target and Taylor immediately collapsed with a wound to the abdomen, Jensen said.

I have the suspicion that this is not an entirely accurate description of what happened.

Nah, what they mean is that they were idiots before they started drinking. Now the guy who got killed seems like an innocent bystander, but it is clear the people who set up the targets were farking idiots.

Of course it could have been a case of them using the Tannerite safely up until they started drinking and then some genius decided that the explosions needed to be bigger so he packed some of the targets with more then recommended or some other explosive like gun powder.

A exploding Tannerite target is intended to let a shooter know a hit has been scored without a walk downrange to see the target.

"A exploding"? Good job, Mr. Editing Guy.

And no, Tannerite is just meant to go 'boom'. If a shooter wants to see the target he can use a spotting scope, telescope, binoculars, etc.

Tannerite is intended to be used in a plastic container, which doesn't lend itself very well to shrapnel. What it sounds like to me is these scholars probably decided to fill something else with the binary explosive...maybe a glass bottle?

Why do people need to explode things at celebrations? Isn't drinking heavily good enough?

Jenson said it was unclear how close the shooters and spectators were to the targets.

It's pretty clear: too close.

Fall down, go boom.

You can't break that combo.

Looks like someone finally stood up for his God given, American rights and didn't let ol fuddy duddy "common sense" get between him and the second amendment.

Because making things go boom is fun?

He was driven to a nearby location where the Rushford Ambulance and Mayo 1 helicopter attended to him. He was pronounced dead at that location.

With this technology;  EMTs will all be forgotten.

So, sh*tfaced, with not just guns, high powered rifles, and shooting at things that, no no, doesn't just sit there and have a bullseye, but asplodes.  Shooting at stuff that blows up.  So, the Red Box was out of good DVDs?

Yep, something else. Says in the article they misused the tannerite. I know the US is called a sue-happy country, but someone does need to be held accountable for this.

And for the love of God, I would love to see all people who are licensed to have guns not do stupid shiat, like shoot them off when people are getting drunk. There are tons of other things to do when drunk besides grabbing a gun and shooting them off like they were cap guns.

I saw the tannerite targets in the store last month.  Left them there.  I believe my exact thoughts were something along the lines of "yeah that won't get misused".

Tannerite is fun.  I have 16 targets, and have used two.  It's a fun back-and-forth with friends to take turns trying to hit the exploding target out at 300+ yards.  The containers are plastic, and small, and none of us has any alcohol in our systems when we do this.  It sounds like someone in this story had a little too much to drink and decided to mix more than the recommended amount in to something like a coffee can, and put it closer than the recommended distance, and this cost someone their life.

Grumpy Cat: Why do people need to explode things at celebrations? Isn't drinking heavily good enough?

Yes it is.  So is making things explode.  But NEVER EVER EVER both at once, EVER!  Some people don't get that, or are too stupid to understand why until it's too late.

\birthday is July 4th, so we do both.  Things go boom first, drinking comes later.

This was clearly a ...target killing

Tannerite is "1,000 times as safe as black powder,"

How can something be 1,000 times as safe.  Do they mean safer.

That's the difficult part about 4th of July for me, I will not have a single drop of alcohol until all the fireworks have been set off and cleared of duds. Which often means getting to the party around 3 in the afternoon and not drinking till 10pm. People expect that because its sold to the public its 100% safe. Explosives do not work like that.

I'm guessing the geniuses involved were making their own exploding targets by buying bulk Tannerite and mixing it into tin cans. Thrifty!

I'm just not a things go boom person. I think there are many ways that money is wasted: expensive handbags, expensive shoes, etc. But I think fireworks are the hugest waste of money I've ever seen. I'm amazed. I just don't get it at all. Cancel all fireworks. Do something better with that money.

I use these for targets

Happy 4th of July!  Everyone gather around the common.  Today we're going to unveil the world's largest volunteer belly lint donor ball!  And with the $10,000 we saved by canceling the fireworks, we repaved the municipal parking lot that didn't need it but we have to spend budget money to get more budget money!

WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICA?

Seriously, a lot of people love to blow shiat up. As a foreigner living in the US I can assure you that the level of explosions on July 4 is farking insane. You people freak me out sometimes.

I once was a guest at an Independence Day party hosted by a certain multi-billionaire deep in the southwest American desert at a secret luxury resort which had every comfort imaginable available (even complimentary cocaine) and which featured a firework display that was simply indescribable and over 30 minutes long, Disney Imagineers could not have done this, and at midnight, a nuclear bomb was detonated high upon a mesa on the horizon. It was brighter than the sun, unlike anything I've ever seen. Totally rad party.

My neck of the woods. We REALLY, REALLY like our guns and things that go boom! here. Apparently. Every year or so someone gets something wrong and winds up in the paper.
