drb9: The photographer is Canadian.  Give him a break.

But, I would also say that the kid is smiling, and looks happy.  He probably was, until his parents got all biatchy about this.

You'd think he'd be concerned aboot dignity. You'd think he'd be concerned aboot respect.

It's terrible composition, yes. Pictures tell stories and the story here is not great, to say the least.

Moving the teacher to the same spot but on the right side would have mostly fixed it or moving the kids over. I'm guessing that the photog had a strict formula to follow, which didn't allow for addressing this sort of thing.

SavageWombat: No, it wasn't malicious - just an overly-anal artist type composing the shot, trying to make the group symmetrical with the risers.  They should have ignored the risers and moved the group over to include the chair, just as suggested.

Whoever composed that shot is not an artist.

The teacher could have been standing behind the wheelchair.  The children could have been shifted to one side on the bleachers toward the wheelchair child instead of the big gap.  The wheelchair could have been front and center (like the photoshop) with no children in the first row right behind him. A couple of kids could have been standing around the chair if the teacher "belongs" on the other side for some reason and the phototag wanted balance.
All in all it is a very sad picture, and somehow the fact that the kid in the wheelchair looks so damn happy makes it even sadder.
It's not special treatment to be included in your class picture with everyone else.

Uzzah: ParagonComplex: These jerks were just so blatant about it. There was a big empty space at the upper left where they could have moved the bottom right kids..

At a minimum, have the teacher stand next to/behind the wheelchair kid, rather than as far away from him as physically possible.

She probably didn't want to cath what ever syndrome/itis or biffida put that poor happy looking kid in the wheelchair to begin with.

We should offer to soup up the kids chair. Some dancing LED strips, maybe sound effects...

2013-06-17 05:35:20 PM
they should have set up a ramp & had the kid jumping the rest of the class, maybe some fire rings or well timed pyrotechnics.... & the teacher scantily clad.

Actually, all the other precious snowflakes 'rents should be upset.  First thing you notice in this picture is "wheels", he stands out.  All the other snowflakes just blend in.  The other 'rents should be outraged, outraged I tell you.  Why isn't my flake more pronounced on this ever so important picture?

2013-06-17 05:35:28 PM
Yes, they should definitely have put him just to the left or right of center, on one of the top two bleachers, so he didn't stand out.

/two bad it's Canada, attorneys would already be hovering for an ADA lawsuit
//bet they didn't even let him try out for the high dive team

If they had just moved the kids over to the end of the bench, it would have been fine, but the photog wanted to center the seats.  The guy's rocket chair is pushed up against the bleachers as much as possible.

Photog is autistic.

i believe this was a serious artistic statement on behalf of the photographer- his or her vision of the gulf between society and the dis..er, alternately-abled.

ParagonComplex: This gave me the giggle fits, but not in the assholy way one is accustomed to with Fark. These jerks were just so blatant about it. There was a big empty space at the upper left where they could have moved the bottom right kids. One of those things that's so sad you either have to laugh or cry so I just got the giggle fits at the abbrasiveness and audasity of these failures of humanity.

WTF? All the other classes sat in the middle of the bench right in front of the camera, just like this class. The dude taking the picture didnt want to move the camera its that simple.

I agree with her that it is poor composition. Why not move the teacher into the gap between the normals and the freakshow-whose-very-presence-must-cause-a-disruption-of-the-learning- environment? But she (or more likely, the idiot "journalist") is wrong about space. GoKart Mozart there is flush up against the footings of the bleachers. He can't be rammed any closer.

But more to the point...tough shiat, mom. By all rights your kid should have been eaten by a leopard by now. In almost any culture, he would have been "tree-felled" by now, if nothing else.

Oh come on, they're making trouble where there is none!

What do you mean the kid is being separated from the rest by empty space? It's a bench! Would they rather have risked his safety and put him on top of a bench just to get him closer to the others?

I don't believe they put him there because they're picking on him or they don't treat him like a human being. They simply put him there because there's nowhere else to put him. Class photos are really like that, you just line up kids, put a teacher somewhere, and snap the shot.

I bet there are lots of unofficial pictures where everyone isn't forced to sit down where the wheelchair kid can be seen closer with his buddies.

There's no problem here and there's nobody to blame. I'm pretty sure if you ask the wheelchair kid himself if there's anything wrong, he's say "No, do you want me to be treated like a rock star and be carried during class picture just for being bound to a wheelchair?"

Headso: How do you as a photographer look at that and think that won't be a problem and that it looks like a fine picture to take.

It appears from another article the company is Lifetouch, and it's a big company. I was going to assume it was a small company using an inexperienced photog on the cheap. I guess it's just a big company with an inexperienced photogragher.

Exactly.  From a photographic sense they did that correctly.

AdolfOliverPanties: If they had just moved the kids over to the end of the bench, it would have been fine, but the photog wanted to center the seats. The guy's rocket chair is pushed up against the bleachers as much as possible.

Actually, I see a better answer.  Spread the kids apart a little bit so they fill the seat.

Big problem this way--the kid is too tall, he would be obstructing the faces behind, not below them like in the photoshop.

I'm not a photographer but I can't imagine how someone who gets paid to take these kinds of pictures wouldn't consider it a part of the quality being paid for is that all the kids fit together as a group.   I think a good photographer would be able to compose this picture in such a way that at first glance you wouldn't even realize one of the kids was in a wheelchair.  This picture looks like he or she did the exact opposite, let's go out of our way to set this kid aside.

The school deserves part of the blame since it's a school picture, so it's part of their responsibility to have someone approve of, or reject, the work done.

2013-06-17 05:51:15 PM
Seriously, I don't see this as bullying or whatever... but it's totally dumbass on the part of the teacher and the photographer. I mean, how hard would it have been to transition the kid to the bench so he could be with his classmates? Even if not, just center him and kind of have some kids down low and on the bench around him and it'd just mask the chair and he'd blend right in. I don't think there was bad intent, but I also don't think there was... proper thinking on any level.
