I'm not convinced that Kayne doesn't pay for positive reviews, especially now that he is part of the Kardashian clan that pays Yahoo! to keep them on the homepage and calls the paparazzi on themselves. He writes lyrics like an elementary student and samples music.......wooooooo, he's Puffy pt.2 without all the money.

FTFA: The straightforward [response] is that West is an idiot, so mired in a fog of narcissism and self-delusion that he doesn't realise the full implications of what he's saying

Yeah, I'm going to go with that one.

Mrs.Sharpier: The album is phenomenal. He's an amazing producer. New Slave is genius...

What grinds my gears is that there are so many unlikable arrogant musicians, artists, writers etc.... Yet it somehow matters and is applied to Kanye, like if this were Morrissey people would be all like "tee hee he's so weird!" Kanye seems to bring out the irrational visceral hate in some people.

No doubt it is because he is a black man and didn't give a shiat what you or the media thinks. That makes him scary.

Yes, he clearly doesn't care what the media thinks about him.  Which is why he complains constantly about how the media portrays him. Which is why he set a world record for butthurt when some skinny little white girl won a meaningless award from the media.  He's a whiny little biatch.  He's about as scary as Carrot Top.

And you know the majority of his album sales are to white kids, right?   And most kids of any race have no idea who Morrissey is, right?

Like always, he has dope beats but he raps like a god damn retard. I've heard a couple of the new tracks and it's so hacky, like he heard all the alternative/conscious/underground rappers and did a shiatty derivative version of all their styles. Dude has a garbage flow and the most shallow "deep" lyrics I've heard in a while (like a Drake that can't sing). Beats are still good though, he's a top level producer.

Madvillainy! What a great album.

For prime black-leftist thought in the vein of Huey Newton, we can throw The Coup's Party Music on this list as an exemplar of the genre, right?

I'll never hear the album but i watched his recent SNL performances and i Completely Didn't Understand It.  it was atonal, arhythmic, abrasive, repetitive, angry, and discordant.  one of the worst performances on that show, ever.  say waht you want about Vampire Weekend, Taylor Swift, the Lumineers, or any of the Clear Channel-derived crap you see on SNL but, at least they're playing a song. West's recent two songs were 3.5 minutes of garbage.

Kanye is farking derivative and boring.

Crucial rap albums in my opinion, and I do not listen primarily to rap:

Straight Out The Jungle - The Jungle Brothers
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive travels and the Paths of Rhythm
Ice T - O.G. Original Gangster
The Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
The Geto Boys - The Geto Boys
N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton

Kanye gets worse with each album, but a surprising amount of younger white people that listen to rap really like this dude for some reason. Also, a few white guys who write for Grantland explicitly named Lil' Wayne as the greatest rapper alive at different points a couple years ago. That was insane to me.

I don't get it. Yeah, College Dropout was well-produced and had some decent lyrics, and Late Registration and Graduation Day had some good tracks, but Kanye sucks lyrically and hasn't dropped anything that is any good on that front since the opening to "Can't Tell Me Nothin'."

However, since 808s and Heartbreak, Kanye has been pretty much unlistenable. He could get away with being irritating if he was actually a good rapper or at least a good producer, but at this point, he's basically terrible.

Talib Kweli recently gave an interview about how Kanye has always been the same way, as a teen he'd be taking about how he was the best dressed rapper alive. He hasn't changed much, but his honesty and dedication is still impressive.

That album is some serious amateur shiat.  If he's a top level producer, I feel bad for hip hop.

I have this feeling that people who think Kanye is a great 'producer' don't know what well produced stuff sounds like.
Blockhead is a great hip-hop producer. See link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvcHGu95XGM
Kanye can create half of a good hook, but lacks the capability to make something really good, at least from what I've heard.

I know full and well who Blockhead is, don't act like I don't know about Aesop Rock and the underground scene, that's my scene! LOL, anyways, he's a good producer and only hipster hoppers like to claim otherwise.

Haha, Aesop Rock is the best. Nothing worse in the world than telling someone you listen to Aesop Rock and they say "you mean A$AP Rocky?"
No, I mean the one that's good.

Eric B. and Rakim - Paid in Full
Nas - Illmatic
Tupac Shakur - Me Against the World and All Eyez on Me
Outkast - ATLiens and Stankonia

Can we throw in mebbe Pharcyde Bizzare Ryde?

needs more EPMD and Wu-Tang.

Slick Rick (The Great Adventures of Slick Rick) and LL Cool J (could be a few albums) need to be on the list. Maybe some Big Daddy Kane as well.

Sensual Tyrannosaurus: I'll never understand the hype about this guy. Maybe I haven't given him a fair listen, but from what I can tell he has very little lyrical talent. How can you be a rapper if you suck at rapping and can't write good lyrics?

Marketing. How is Bieber a star? Why does anyone take Miley Cyrus seriously? Same deal, different moron. This one's a bit more narcissistic and pretentious than most, but he's no different than any other manufactured "artist" - he's all marketing, no talent, a useless tool through which others make money.

Snapper Carr: A few from this century

I guess I was looking at the list more like "important" albums - ones that changed the game, expanded the audience who listened to rap, etc. The Beastie Boys, Tribe, De La Soul, Run DMC (and similar) made rap mainstream. The social commentary in Public Enemy lyrics was so much more complex than anyone had used before. The other albums each helped rap evolve in one way or another.

So, that's why my choices were older.

I listened to some of the tracks on YouTube, and in my opinion, this album is pretty much awful.  It sounds like someone trying to be experimental and failing miserably.

I like a good, noisy record, but this is just overly simplistic with no depth to it.  Tons of stuff like this was done in the 90s-00s during the whole "illbient" phase, but done much, much better.

SlothB77: Metacritic has Yeezus at 84, with Rolling Stone giving it a 90 and billboard an 88.

Yeezus is the darkest, most extreme music Kanye has ever cooked up, an extravagantly abrasive album full of grinding electro, pummeling minimalist hip-hop, drone-y wooz and industrial gear-grind. Every mad genius has to make a record like this at least once in his career--at its nastiest, his makes Kid A or In Utero or Trans all look like Bruno Mars.

I don't know what any of that means or if it is supposed to be a positive. It sounds like a bunch of buzz words strung together.

Kanye West is a douchebag of the highest order. I don't think anyone will dispute that. But the author clearly lets that affect his opinion of the album. I haven't given it the full listen yet, but I've heard good things. The phrase "album of the year" is already being thrown around. My point: It is possible for assholes to make good music. Again, I don't know if the album is any good. I haven't checked it out yet. It's just way too obvious the author is biased.
