Crucial rap albums in my opinion, and I do not listen primarily to rap:

Straight Out The Jungle - The Jungle Brothers

Ice T - O.G. Original Gangster
The Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising

"This album doesn't sound good to me... I guess it's because the artist is being 'challenging' and'provocative' and my ears aren't open enough to hear it properly. ****."

When Lester Bangs blew smoke up Metal Machine Music's ass, he was trolling.  Please, everyone in music journalism, stop mimicking Lester Bangs, except for the part where you choke on a fistful of pills.

article: 4/5 stars.
subby:  "worse album of all time"

conclusion:  we get it, he's black.

2013-06-17 05:31:45 PM

Smelly McUgly: Kanye gets worse with each album, but a surprising amount of younger white people that listen to rap really like this dude for some reason. Also, a few white guys who write for Grantland explicitly named Lil' Wayne as the greatest rapper alive at different points a couple years ago. That was insane to me.

I don't get it. Yeah, College Dropout was well-produced and had some decent lyrics, and Late Registration and Graduation Day had some good tracks, but Kanye sucks lyrically and hasn't dropped anything that is any good on that front since the opening to "Can't Tell Me Nothin'."

However, since 808s and Heartbreak, Kanye has been pretty much unlistenable. He could get away with being irritating if he was actually a good rapper or at least a good producer, but at this point, he's basically terrible.

Man kanye gets a bad wrap. My beautiful dark twisted fantasy was a classic album. Good from start to finish.
graduation was a wicked album to. College dropout was a damn fine album.

yeah he had some shiat in between. Sure some of his lyrics you cant tell what the hell he is talking about. But he is practically shakespear compared to lil wayne.

heard em say is still lyrically his best track.

best ever. Nope. I would have him somewhere in the top 10 depending on my mood.

gangstarr is always #1 though

We got some good playlists here in this thread. And Imma give Kanye the benefit of the doubt. You don't just throw out a industrial noise atonal album that gets a review like that just for funsies. The man has some demons he just can't vanquish, even with all the bling and bootay in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if he eats a shotgun one of these days.

Like always, he has dope beats but he raps like a god damn retard. I've heard a couple of the new tracks and it's so hacky, like he heard all the alternative/conscious/underground rappers and did a shiatty derivative version of all their styles. Dude has a garbage flow and the most shallow "deep" lyrics I've heard in a while (like a Drake that can't sing). Beats are still good though, he's a top level producer.

I didn't hear that when I listened to that album.  I heard something that fell very, very short of the mark.  Like someone wanted to make something industrial but had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

I hear that a lot.  People who haven't taken the time to really listen to electronic music and then try to produce something and the whole thing sounds like a complete mess.

I can't really disagree. Let's just say this, I heard a couple of the new tracks and the instrumental was the only thing close to a redeeming quality. I guess I hated his rapping so much that it made the beat look good in comparison. Compared to legit industrial, it is derivative and half assed, so I guess we agree.
