Hoffa was transported to Brooklyn where his body was crushed in a compactor at Paul Varios junkyard.

Paul Cicero in Goodfellas was based on Paul Vario.

Richard Kuklinski "The Ice Man" used the same chop shop/junkyard to dispose of many of his victims.

Jimmy was stabbed in the heart with a knife, shot in the forehead 4 times, dumped in a 55gal. drum that was filled with ready-mix concrete.  The drum was loaded in a dumpster that was filled with gravel.  The dumpster, transported by barge, was loaded onto a larger barge and transited the Panama Canal under cover of darkness.  Eighteen days later it positioned itself over the Marianas trench where a mothballed Saturn V rocket had been stored.  The dumpster was put on the rocket which successfully orbited before deploying the dumpster in a short return trajectory to a junkyard outside Newark.  It was then crushed and sold as scrap.

I think being assigned to look for Jimmy Hoffa is akin to a punishment brigade at the FBI.

In the FBI office the new guy says, I wonder where Jimmy Hoffa was buried.  Silence.... Detective Edwards reaches under his desk and lifts tattered cardboard box with the word Hoffa written on it with a faded sharpie.  Walks over and drops it on the new guys desk with a thud.  In unison the rest of the detectives say 'ya done goofed kid'

I would think that the Mafia has by now had ample time to remove and rebury any remains of Hoffa. Plus, it wasn't unknown for them to occasionally employ rather gruesome techniques to dispose of corpses.

Such as running the body through industrial meat grinders in any of the many slaughter houses they had, including those which produced animal feed. Mashing it up in a car compactor and making sure it got dropped in an active steel furnace.

Running it through a commercial incinerator.

Or simply wrapping it up in chains and dropping it off a ship far out at sea. Passenger liners used to toss their garbage off the ship in weighted bags ages ago. Many ships carried chunks of scrap iron for just that purpose.

Besides, the Mafia used to have it's fingers in nearly every major construction in most major cities. You might wonder exactly who is buried in the deep foundations of some of those huge sky scrapers. Especially the ones that use huge, hollow cylinders later pumped full of cement.

If you have the resources and the time, you can get rid of a body and leave no traces. Most of the time the Mafia left bodies lying about was for an object lesson.

BTW, hungry pigs will eat an entire human body dumped in their pen and the more pigs, the less remains -- unlike Lions, Tigers and other primary predators which will leave bones behind.

MacWizard: I love the new breed of journalists, who have to start a new paragragh for every sentence. Apparently, none of them were connected to any other sentence in the story.

I love how you don't know anything about newspaper writing. This is not remotely "new" or from any "breed of journalist." In fact, it's almost as old as newspapers themselves.

When writing an article that is likely to appear in column inches (i.e., in a newspaper or magazine where there are several columns on a page), you don't follow standard rules for paragraphs or you'd end up with walls of text with no breaks. When writing for column inches, you generally don't want any "paragraph" to be more than 2-3 column inches, so you generally start a new "paragraph" every sentence or two. Go look at any newspaper ever.

When those articles get poured into a web page instead, it sometimes looks a little funny. Writers, editors and site operations people have better things to do with their time than reconstruct proper paragraphs from newsprint. You'll get over it.

(It's similar to when like when a TV or radio news report gets transcribed into print on a website, and ends up reading a little funny, because the script wasn't meant for print consumption. It's not like the local news station is going to hire someone to re-write every story for print consumption. That would be a waste of money.)

At this point it's almost as likely, he had a heart attack and the goons he was with panicked and dumped his body in a dumpster, and into the landfill he went unnoticed.  Seriously there is not any good reason for whoever offed him to hide the body, like people are going to think he skipped town.

I post this in every Hoffa dig thread, just to let everyone know what an old fart I am. I was at the same strip mall at about the same time Hoffa disappeared. I was a caddy at Oakland Hills CC at that time and I was buying a pop at what was then called a dime store. And I gotta say it makes a hell of a lot more sense that someone would take a body up Adams road and dump it in what was then the sticks than it would to drive it over to Roseville and plop it in a driveway in the middle of a busy suburb.

Did James Ellroy ever cover any of this stuff in his books? He always had some awesome conspiracy theories in his novels, usually wildly entertaining ones that were at least partially based on fact.

I read a bunch of his LA Noir stuff, and then American Tabloid, but I didn't know if he wrote anything further about the more modern era. American Tabloid ends with the Kennedy Assassination and Hoffa didn't disappear until what, 1971?

Tony Pro was a Jersey guy.

Maybe it was not sanctioned by the Detroit Partnership so the body had to be taken out of their territory.

Mob guys do things on properties familiar to them...whether it is a business or a residential property. They have transported bodies across state lines in the past.

Mobsters have a thing called "Dinner and a Show" where they dispose of the body in front of other mobsters then go out to dinner.

The first place the cops would look would be Michigan.....the first place they wouldn't look is another state.

Well sure.  I'm talking about degrees of ridiculousness.  Roseville was more ridiculous that Oakland Twp.  It's probably more likely they'll find Hoffa in the wreckage of a Lockheed Electra off of Nikumaroro island than they'll dig him up this time around.  My guess is incinerator or a couple 55 gallon drums dumped in the Detroit river.

Back in the 70's sometime, my dad sent a crew of workers out to the meadowlands. One guy, a smartass, yelled out the window about Jimmy Hoffa being buried there. He was taken in for only that and spent the next month in jail being interrogated by numerous law enforcement bureaus. Guy in question was Italian.

end maybe csb.

But you're right, it's not new. Every newbie out of journalism classes starts out with this shiatty technique. Whenever the new journalism students showed up and started handing in stories where every sentence was a new paragraph, I would make them re-write it so it had some coherence as a story.
