It's like "being held down and watching your family be raped at a beach. It's liberating! It makes you focus on what's important."

hmm, looks like dan harmon is using the military definition of "liberating"

Harmon had wanted Murray to play Jeff Winger's Dad. (He named Jeff Winger after Murray's character in Stripes), and he was disappointed that the opportunity had been taken away from him.
Yeah, that would have been awesome. Especially now that Chevy is gone.

I didn't care for Community. It insists upon itself.

I actually thought having James Brolin play his dad was pretty good.  It didn't scream "STUNT CASTING!" and it was a good mix of jerk and buffoon.

FTA: Harmon also continues to trash Sony, who is his employer again, basically suggesting that Sony treats writers like an assembly line. "We'll just replace him with someone else, some other prep school frat ass f*cking dipshi*t.' The system wants us not to be human."

Man, I like this guy, but it amazes me anyone is willing to put up with him.

Season 4 should've paved its own way instead of trying to replicate Community of the past.

Did I miss something about Season 4? I remember hearing that Chevy caused a lot of problems on the set and had been written off the show, but by the time the season aired and ended, he was there the whole time.

Yep. Though even Season 3 was showing signs that the show may have run its course. Your move Harmon, can you make it worth watching again?

I can understand where he's coming from in that quote though. If you watched that big Simpson's writer's reunion broadcast there's a similar story. Basically, the writers are making Fox billions and some pencil dick exec has the gall to tell them to stop spending so much on pretzels and soda in the writer's room.
Time and again, the creative people who are largely responsible for a show's success are treated like shiat and threatened as replaceable. Some of them actually stand up and say "fark you". Then they are the problem person for speaking up.

Studio had to choose between "creative" type (writer/showrunner) and big name actor. Stars make ratings, they figured. They chose actor.
It seems they chose poorly.

I do give them credit for bringing Harmon back, though.

//never seen the show

Pierce was still there, but Chevy was on his way out.  He wasn't in a bunch of the Season 4 episodes at all, they'd start out with an excuse as to why the character wasn't there and then just roll on with the show.  There was even a doppledeaner for Pierce in the Origin Story episode because Chevy wasn't there.

I believe the origin story episode was shot last because they shot the actual last episode earlier expecting Chase to leave before the whole season was done. He was obviously written with a much smaller role and I expect in most of the shots he was actually in, Donald Glover was the only other person on set (since they sit on the same side of the table).

Season 4 kinda sucked (it had a few moments of "teh funny"), but season 3 was just as bad - or worse seeing as how the show was at least TRYING to be funny in S4, and S3 just seemed like it was too cool to be funny ("I liked comedies before they became funny and everybody started liking them.")

Is Harmon going to douche himself out of the job again before he even restarts?

Season 4 had some pretty good episodes. That's what probably chapping his ass most.

Shut up and prove you can do better. Without pillow or cushion forts, please.

Get over it, tubby.

You're a network TV show runner. Your job is to keep 18-to-35-year-olds in front of the TV until the next Burger King commercial airs.  This isn't high art and even if it were, you already gave up any rights of ownership you might have had to it long ago.

It's pretty hard to write much more than twenty or thirty quality episodes of any show, let alone a comedy. By the end of season two they were up to 50 episodes, or over 18 hours of programming.

Nobody likes to see a show the like get cancelled but sometimes I wish more shows got killed off as soon as they are no longer in their prime. Everyone gets to remember the best of the show before it jumps the shark and a slot opens up for some fresh ideas.

I do not understand all the hand-wringing about Season 4.  Was it Community at its best?  No.  But neither was Season 3.  The second half of Season 3 was full-on audience pandering crap, with more and more ridiculous hugging-and-learning crap (Hi Gus from Breaking Bad!  I'm racist and I've never met you before, but here, have my Dad's inheritance!)

I'd honestly take the 13 episodes of Season 4 over the last 13 Harmon episodes.

He was a GREAT supporting character, but a HORRIBLE regular cast member.

from the MORE is MORE school of thought that brought you

3 or 4 villains in a single Batman film
100 suits of boring armor in Iron Man 3
The Final Five on BSG

I'd have liked Friday Night Lights a lot better if they'd focused the following seasons on Landry's ongoing blood lust after he murdered that guy.

I would imagine you've never created anything in your life.   Shut up and prove you can do anything, period, let alone create a beloved television show and watch it mangled for a year after being forced off the thing.

I just watched Season 4 of Community yesterday. It wasn't bad, but it didn't really have whip-smart moments either. It was kind of like a pastiche of things that had been great before.

The season 4 writers were however absolutely correct in their depiction of family gatherings, per the Thanksgiving episode.

He was faking Changesia as part of a secret City College plot. Then Chang just decided to stop working with City College. Season 4 was not good.

I liked it and still feel like that show has the strongest holiday episodes. While watching I just had the constant feeling that the whole season was rushed (in terms of time allotted for writing and production.)

So he's the dick for insisting his staff be treated as a team of talented people, and the exec who expects his writers to be interchangeable cogs is the one in the right? That's some impressive suction you've got there; I hope the manager-class appreciates it, but considering how much they spend a year on the propaganda that likely put those ideas in your heads, they'll probably just take it for granted :/

Somehow, Larry David managed to navigate the network minefields and consistently deliver top-quality entertainment. I have a hard time believing he's the easiest guy to have working for you, either. Now, he pretty much calls his own shots. Maybe I'll do some more Curb, maybe I won't.

Harmon seems too full of himself for his own good. See his picture under crash and burn.

Season 4 was a let down. Let's not forget they ran it out of sequence and started it later, so we got all these Holiday Episodes in the middle of March. It may have helped if they stuck to the viewing schedule, and played them in order, but the season was still not as great as the others.

I don't know if i'd go that far as there's some great episodes in the last half of season 3.

but I do agree that even though Season 4 wasn't all that good, Season 3 had some pretty bad episodes as well. I'm really not convinced Harmon running season 4 would've lead to a better season. I'm interested to see what happens with season 5, but I think the ship has mostly sailed on the show.
