I went to an Orthodox Jewish HS. In my junior yearbook was a pull quote from the principal's daughter on a story about changing our dress code to allow the wearing of "school tee shiats, to enhance school spirit".

Ah yes, graduation! My son's went swimmingly if you can ignore the fistfight between the mothers in the bleachers behind me. Thank goodness a giant swarm of bees came by to break it up.

I just explained to my son that he wouldn't hear me whoop and holler when his name was announced because the parents who do that never really expected their kids to graduate.

It's intended to say bonded.Grow up, people.
We should ridicule the intent.  Students who bond with their teachers are nonsocial dorks and deserve to be bullied.
